Last Season
24-6-6, 17-3-2 (first). Lost to Minnesota in the national semifinals.
"We're really excited about the way we performed last year. We feel we have a strong group coming back and added a good class in our freshman. Our senior class is ready to lead the way," said Coach Doug Derraugh. "You need to keep improving throughout the year in order to have a chance to compete with the best of the best at the end of the year. I think if we can stay focused on being the best team we can possibly be in the end, I think that's going to be very important. Quite honestly, there's a bit of luck, as well."
Names to know
Maddie Mills followed up her Ivy League Rookie of the Year season with another solid performance, leading the Big Red with 39 points. She isn't as flashy as some other leading scorers, but brings poise and vision to Cornell's offense.
Senior Micah Zandee-Hart is as unflappable a blue liner as exists in women's college hockey right now. As the goalie situation gets settled, she'll be an important part of keeping the defense calm and being the leader the Big Red need. Cornell was third in the country on defense last year, allowing just 1.69 goals per game.
What to Watch For
The Big Red lost very few of the pieces that made them a Frozen Four team last season. Marlène Boissonnault was a big presence for them in net, but junior Lindsay Browning stepped up in a big way in the postseason when they needed her to. She has limited overall experience, but showed she can handle the pressure and be the goalie they need.
Cornell ends the season with five games against teams that did not qualify for the ECAC tournament. They'll need to stay sharp and work on ramping up for the postseason outside of their game schedule if they're going to be at the caliber they'll need to advance through the postseason.
They scored six short-handed goals last season. This is a smart team that sees the ice well and has the vision to know when to jump on those opportunities. They're dangerous because they're good on the puck, but they might be even better without it.
Crystal Ball
I have Cornell third, but I also think the top three spots are up for grabs and any of those teams could push past the others.
For a few minutes I thought that the byline was "Crystal Ball" and how awesome a name for a sports prognosticator that was.
The ECAC site has Cornell facing Princeton (exhibition? scrimmage?) this Saturday, but no mention of it on either team's site. Huh.
It's been kept a bit of 'quiet' news.... scrimmage is 2 PM at Lynah _ I plan on going
Scrimmage was 3 - 25 min periods and Princeton looked a bit better than we did. It's early and plenty of time to improve. A lot of small positives - Freshman were skating throughout the lineup and Lindsay started in goal and looked strong. Kaity played second half of the scrimmage in the net.
P.S. watched last 25 minutes of Men's soccer as they blew past Harvard 6-0! LGR
Robert Morris vs Big Red Women tonight at 6 PM at Lynah. First 100 fans get a t-shirt. Be there! LGR

What does it say?
And they steamroller over RM 6-0.
White T with large C and the Bear and the inscription:
CORNELL WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY
5 TIMES ECAC CHAMPIONS
2018-2019 OVERALL: 20-3-6 ECAC RECORD: 17-3-2
ECAC PLAYOFFS 3/9 & 10, 2019 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 3/22 & 24, 2019
BIG RED
The back of the shirt has the team's Roster.
And then win 3-0 in game two. Considering Robert Morris gave Clarkson and Minnesota fits (0-3-1, but with a pair of OT losses), this is a nice start to the season.

I thought the ladies played much better Friday, but they did enough to win yesterday. Certainly a nice start.
Nice win by the lady icers 1-0 over Q-pac
And the women (and Lindsay Browning - G) start the season with 3 shutouts! LGR
Browning's GAA balloons to 0.25 after a 3-1 win over Princeton. A lot of the freshmen don't seem to be getting much ice time yet. Be interesting to see if that changes when the opposition gets a bit weaker.

Depth has often been an issue for the women, as the talent pool isn't as deep. So probably a good sign that our frosh haven't been needed to be called upon yet.
When we have our two captains away w/ Canadian National team soon it will be a challenging opportunity for ice time for some.
Not on the women's team, but playing for the Korean National Women's Ice Hockey Team: Cornell Sun (https://cornellsun.com/2019/11/10/cornell-sophomore-min-shin-22-shines-as-member-of-korean-national-womens-ice-hockey-team/) Call her a recruit?

Such a good story. Hope she gets her chance to play for Cornell, even if it's mostly on the bench.
Women have a 4 point weekend, blowing out Yale [6-0] and Brown [9-1] at home.
Through two periods in Columbus, it's #6 Ohio State 2-1 #3 Cornell. A very stiff challenge and a very physical Ohio State hockey team so far tonight. They've done a great job in limiting our transition opportunities while we've been searching for a tactical edge.
Third period... more of the same. Lots of cheap shots. Tough playing from behind, giving up a third goal. 3-1 final. Good goaltending on both sides. Bitter taste after this one. Expecting a heated grudge match tomorrow.
Game2, Cornell 5-1 OSU. Incredible goaltending performance from Lindsay Browning to keep Cornell in the game in the first 1-2 periods, being badly outshot. Another nasty, physical affair, with one of our top D Jaime Bourbonnais being ejected in the 1st for boarding. This win will pay dividends.
