During a late-night visit to the Swedish Hockey League website, I found a feature story on Cam Abbott '06, the head coach of Rögle BK (https://www.shl.se/artikel/ohwgak0rt-403dd/shl-spotlight-cam-abbott). His twin brother and classmate Chris is the general manager of Rögle BK.

Vesce played there during the lockout season.  Is there a Cornell-Rogle conduit?

I'm not aware of any pipeline, but I don't know the inside story of Rögle BK's decision to hire the Abbotts about 19 months ago.

The fact that he's only 35 makes me feel less old than I was expecting.

I watched a bit of the Islanders-Rangers game and heard Bardreau's name mentioned once.  I also saw the Isles assigned Kubiak to Bridgeport.

I don't know if people here know the show "Tanked" on Animal Planet.  It's about a company that builds large fish tanks for celebrities and corporations,  and tonight I saw an episode from 2017 where they built a tank for the San Jose Sharks.

The episode included a couple of conversations with Douglas Murray. The tank they built included a lot of replica hockey gear, including a mask and one of Doug's hockey sticks.

Agreed.  Great article.

It'll be interesting if he plays Sunday against the Flyers. Quite a few of the Flyers players skated with him on the LV Phantoms.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/don-van-massenhoven-mario-lemieux-lockouts-car-sales/

Van Massenhoven felt that same bond among his NHL family, too, the league often seeming to be just as close-knit a community. The veteran official saw it during that same injury stint in Florida.

"I'm in the hospital the next day in intensive care — I just had an 11-hour surgery. I open up my eyes and there's Joe Nieuwendyk, who played for the Florida Panthers. He had come to the hospital to visit me the next day. I can't tell you how emotional that made me feel, because he took the time out of his day," Van Massenhoven says.

"The funny part is he brought in a box of donuts, and I'm lying in intensive care. I barely can see, and I go, 'Joe, I don't think I can eat any donuts.' He says, 'Well, that's okay, my kids ate half of them already.'"

Not sure it belongs here, but since Coach IS an alumnus, see the 1984-1985 Press Guide (https://www.amazon.com/1984-1985-Cornell-Hockey-Media-Press/dp/B07NC18T43/ref=sr_1_200?keywords=cORNELL&qid=1572730189&s=sports-collectibles&sr=1-200).

Type Cornell in the sports collectables category and they have a batch of cards of players on the 93-94 team.  Vinnie Auger!

The Ivy newsletter via e-mail indicates that only two Cornell players (Nash and Ryan) have played in the NHL in the first half of the season. I guess they don't include brief call-ups.

16 Ivies Compete In NHL First Half

Sixteen former Ivy League men's ice hockey players have competed in National Hockey League (NHL) games during the 2019-20 campaign. The 16 Ivies have accumulated 74 goals, 115 assists and 189 points in 527 NHL games this season.

Five of the Ivy League's six participating institutions have been represented—with Harvard pacing all Ivy League programs with eight former student-athletes making appearances ahead of the NHL All-Star Break.

Not much, but it's a start. :-)

I watched a bit of the game and all the 3rd period.  Sadly, I didn't hear his name called.  Pens definitely shortened the bench in the 3rd.

Likely a short-term call-up, but a pretty significant moment.

And he played. (https://www.nhl.com/penguins/news/a-surreal-night-for-the-entire-angello-family/c-314504970)

Nice article. From the photos we see that someone in his cheering section had the good taste to wear a Cornell jersey.

Willcox with a shorty in tonights Phantoms' game.  It looked like a pass, but it went in long side.  His first goal of the year.  (He was also the intermission guest on the TV broadcast).

Joel Lowry getting ice time for Springfield.

That's great for Cole, but a bummer for me.  I was thinking about going to the Phantoms - Sound-Tigers game tomorrow night to watch his return to Allentown.

Edit:  I went.  No Bardreau, of course, but Kubiak started for Bridgeport and had a decent game.  Willcox was his usual steady self for LV.

Went to the Blue Jackets at the Devils game on the 16th.  Brought my Blue Jackets Riley Nash jersey and put it up against the glass during the warmup.  Nash saw it and was nice enough to give me a puck.  Being a grown-ass man, didn't expect that at all.

Nash was +1 but the Blue Jackets lost in a shootout.

Bardreau placed on waivers by the Islanders today (2/17), probably in anticipation of sending him back down to Bridgeport, unless someone claims him first.

Of course, the Penguins sent Angello down and waived another guy (the similarly named Andrew Agozzino) to trade for a bunch of older guys and scrubs. Then they lose six straight, because every time they bring in old guys at the deadline, it backfires.

I was going to post this on the Lacrosse 2020 topic, but I didn't want to take anything away from this year's lacrosse team.

So I'm posting this here, in the Alumni News 2019-20 topic. I know it's in the Hockey forum, but it still seems most appropriate.

If you haven't seen this video of Rob Pannell repeating what people were saying about him yet, you should https://twitter.com/i/status/1237016688098529285.

The back story is that he had a contract with MLL and did not transfer to the new PLL while the old contract was in force. Now it's expired, and he's going to the PLL.

My issue with the PLL (and maybe it's because I'm old) is that there are no geographic ties to the teams, so I have a hard time establishing a rooting interest in, say, the "Whipsnakes".  Just doesn't cut it for me.

Title: Justin Krueger
Post by: jtwcornell91 on April 07, 2020, 05:05:32 PM
So I just learned (via a facebook farewell message from the team) that Justin Krueger's time with SC Bern is at an end.  Apparently they announced back November that they wouldn't be renewing his contract after this season.  Apparently he's still a free agent.  Here's a recent article (in German) https://www.blick.ch/sport/eishockey/nla/papa-ralph-hilft-scb-verteidiger-krueger-auf-jobsuche-id15806551.html "Papa Ralph helps SCB Defenseman Krueger on the job hunt".  Some highlights: Justin Krueger played eight years for SCB and won three Swiss Championships, including last year.  "My heart belongs to Bern" he says, but as the article points out, his future is elsewhere.  With the NHL suspended, Sabres coach Ralph Krueger is acting as his son's agent, and he's in talks with two or three teams in Switzerland.  There's no talk of moving to Germany, so Siddharth and I will have to shelve our fantasies of him playing for Löwen Frankfurt or Adler Mannheim.  Justin and his wife Eva have two kids now, including a two-year-old daughter with (according to her father) a mean slapshot.

She's been doing a podcast centered on  the women's team with 20 something episodes so far. Have a feeling there may well be people here who are interested.  Looks like it's hosted in many places; here's one accessible link.
