Title: 2019-02-01: Cornell 4 Union 0
Post by: Scersk '97 on February 01, 2019, 11:46:43 AM
Onward to the ECAC's finest high-school arena.

Schafer won't speculate as to who will play. (https://cornellsun.com/2019/01/31/lynah-lowdown-what-to-know-as-no-1311-mens-hockey-visits-no-18-union-rpi/)

Andreev is out until at least March with a broken collarbone. Thanks Harvard.

Others who have been out are Bauld, Mullin, and (of course) Green. I have begun to worry we've lost Green for the season, or longer.

Schafer had been saying Green was day-to-day (aren't we all?).  It might be misinformation, but my take on Mike is he doesn't deign to mislead, he just says nothing.

Mullin has been in and out.  I thought he looked good when he was (briefly) back.

Malott looks like hell, my guess is he's walking wounded.

Andreev had kind of disappeared even before the injury.  I don't know whether teams were taking him more seriously or if perhaps he was also suffering from injury which Harvard made worse.

I think we really miss Green's stability on the blue line.  Lots and lots of lazy mistakes which have to be driving Schafer batty.

Malott certainly looked horrible on that giveaway to Snodgrass.

Just saw on Twitter that Green is playing tonight.  Malott and Mullin also in the lineup.

I think Andreev has been the most talented offensive player on the team outside of the top line and Vanderlaan and I haven't seen any regression as the season has gone on. He is a huge loss.

Mallott did seem to miss defensive assignments on Colgate goals in the Saturday game last week.

Green is a great player, but in his stead Leahy has been steady defensively and has created offensive chances with his skating. I actually think the team might be hurt more from the absence of Andreev, as I believe the team now has only three healthy centers and is lacking a QB on the 2nd PP unit.

It's been evident all year but especially tonight: the passing by Cornell this season versus a few seasons ago is night-and-day. This team connects on tape-to-tape passes past Big Red teams wouldn't have dreamed of. A lot of that is Donaldson (and Andreev when he was healthy) but the whole team is doing it. OTOH, with their increased confidence Cornell also attempts more risky passes and some lead to very costly turnovers (see: last Saturday).

Can't miss the first with these guys or you'll turn it on and find out we're up 3-0! GBR!

This was my experience tonight. Much better than last Saturday, when I tuned in to find Cornell down 2-1 to Colgate.

So, yeah. I'm getting tired of seeing our guys sliding into the boards after being hit from behind.

Meanwhile, 3 Union goalies? What, was this an exhibition match or something?

Third period appearance by Young seemed to be a thank you to the senior from a coach who rarely shows that type of class. Bennett?!?

The third goalie was Union's Omar Kanji wannabe - good around the doorposts.

Has Omar been gone (from Cornell hockey) five years?

Graduated in 2013; has done very well for himself in finance/banking and still plays in charity tournaments, etc.
