Title: Frozen Four Activities
Post by: rhovorka on April 07, 2003, 02:45:08 AM
So we know about the CU pre-semi event at Pearl St. brewing, and there's the Friday award ceremonies.  I found an article about the organizing committee's efforts on the Ann Arbor News website: http://www.mlive.com/sports/aanews/index.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/html_standard.xsl?/base/sports-0/10496241728210.xml

Apparently they're planning on having an open house at the unfortunately named Dunn Tire Park (nee Pilot Field) between the semis.
[Q]An open house Thursday between the semifinal games at Dunn Tire Park, one of the finest minor league baseball facilities in the country. It's three blocks north of the arena.

"Between the semifinals games, we're planning to have the park and all the concession booths open," Walsh said. "Weather-permitting, we'll have a battle of the college bands, and show a tape of the first game on the scoreboard." [/Q]
Pretty cool idea, IMO.  Should we win, I'd love to see the replay while checking out the ballpark.

Dunn Tire Park, formerly named NorthAmericare Park and also previously named Pilot Field, opened in 1988 as the largest minor league baseball stadium in America.  I believe it retains that "record" to this day.  It seats about 21,000 and was designed by HOK Sport, the same architecture firm that has designed Coors Field, Cleveland Browns Stadium, Heinz Field, Comerica Park, Arrowhead Pond, the Air Canada Centre, Edison Field, Ericsson Stadium, FedEx Field, Gillette Stadium, Jacobs Field, New Comiskey, Camden Yards, Pac Bell Park, and PNC Park among others.
As far as AAA baseball goes, it is 1st rate with a two level concourse, a suite level, an upper deck, and a jumbotron on the scoreboard.  They even have charbroiled hot dogs in the concession stands.
A great place to visit that Thursday between the games, since you'll be kicked out of the arena anyway.

Matt, that is yet to be seen. As I understand it the Cornell band has been invited and will likely attend.

Chris - good to hear. It did seem from the information available to me that the band would be in a hurry to skip town after the first semifinal.
