Be a little easier to see the most current poll if you change the subject line to include the poll date. I know there's a flag in front of unread messages, too, but it could be a comment on a previous week's poll.

Check out the change for the 11/6 polls. Is that what you mean? I thought putting the date first might be even easier, or does that screw up something else?

That's perfect, dating it at the beginning (or end, doesn't matter). You were the only one. Thank you. It's a good thing, too, for threads where one subject line covers the whole basketball or lacrosse season.

Despite our divide-by-zero winning percentage, are #50 in SOS according to KRACH.  You have to go down to #26 Niagara before finding someone with a weaker SOS.

That will rise when Harvard starts consistently winning as I (and I assume many others here) expect. I'm not convinced with QPac.

Agreed. And in the meantime, I really can't argue with #50. Our OOC SOS is exceptionally weak this year, which is why it's especially nice that we've started league play 4-0.

NCAA voters let us off easy: 6-1 win over SLU, 4-0 loss to Clarkson only drops Cornell [University] from 6th to 7th. Maybe because we're the only one-loss team left. http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/icehockey-men/d1 Clarkson climbs 8th to 5th; fair enough.

So when was the last time that the only ECAC teams with meaningful rankings in either polls or PWR, in both Men's and Women's, were all from NY.

And virtually the same 3 teams Clarkson, Colgate, and Cornell, for Men's and Women's.

And they all begin with C.

If I did one for the women's team it would be almost solid red and orange.

Speaking of which, I would DEARLY LOVE to have our rankings in the polls for all the other years so I could do similar presentations and amend our old box scores with our (and opponents' rankings).

That would be a lot of fun.

So if somebody had, oh, I dunno... decades and decades of old programs and Don Birkmeyer and other resources, that would be a great source of that data.

Consider side eye given.

Yeah, yeah I know. I've made some progress, in that I've brought the boxes up from the basement and that means Sherri won't let me leave them in view forever.

But I don't know how I'd get you the data. Once I do an inventory, I plan on giving them to the library, and if they'd scan them and put them online, I might donate some money.

I guess once they're in Ithaca, you could view them when you come. But considering how long it's taken me to get this far (and that ain't far), I don't think you can rely upon me to get you the data.

However, it turns out I may not be going to Miami. If not, I'll devote some time to doing an inventory.

In a word?

No.

I've done something like 95% of the box scores, from a hundred different sources over, well, 30 years of work including work by many busy beaver assistants and also Art's incredible records.  But that doesn't get me the poll data.

The best bet would be the Boston Globe, which did a very decent job of reporting polls at least from the 80s onwards, or Birkmeyer since I believe he faithfully reported the polls from the 50s through the 80s.  Until recently at least the Globe archiving project was proceeding slooooooooooooowly, but I haven't checked for about a year.  Their indexing is horrific so it's almost like mounting old microfiche and scrolling through it.  If ever there was a job for AI.

Edit: It appears they have no gone back prior to 1980, and what little they have is behind a pay wall.  Fuck that.

It's extremely labor intensive so you really need somebody like me with exceedingly low self esteem to dig through it all.

If at some point all that shit is scanned and uploaded then all that is needed is picking through it like an enormous data garbage heap.  I'm cool with that.

You're assuming (1) there are Cornell archives and (2) we have an AD or SID who returns emails.

Obviously the last 25+ years of work would have been easier with Cornell's help.  For whatever reason that has never been forthcoming despite many approaches.

The smaller the fiefdom, the more jealously guarded.

Title: Re: Polls 2017-18
Post by: Bahnstorm on December 03, 2017, 05:45:58 PM
Yes with an active netid you can get things like the Globe going way back through things like the library's subscription to the Proquest Historical Newspapers collection (http://resolver.library.cornell.edu/misc/5071678).
Some services require a student or faculty netid and alumni aren't covered, but many services are covered for alumni netids too: https://alumni.library.cornell.edu

Pick any major newspaper and search the Cornell library catalog, taking into account changes in publication name over time, and chances are it is online through one or more of the resources the library subscribes to or has digitized themselves:

Boston Globe up to 1960: https://newcatalog.library.cornell.edu/catalog/9135035
1960 to Present:
https://newcatalog.library.cornell.edu/catalog/5370668

In searching the Globe archive, I found it amusing that at least since 1951 they were discussing issues surrounding the NCAA team selection. Globe, March 1951: (http://i64.tinypic.com/2m28e1w.jpg)

And Greg, you'll be happy to know that I brought my stuff in and started working on it. I'm starting with the "Intercollegiate Hockey Newsletter". I'm going to see what issues I'm missing and whether RPI or UNH, the 2 schools that I know have many issues in their library system, could fill in my gaps. Then, before doing anything more, I'll contact CU and see what we can do. I don't have any idea what it would cost to get them posted, but I'll ask.

Hopefully RPI will augment mine, as I suspect I might be able to look at them and hopefully copy what I need. Maybe I have some they can use.

So do any of our RPI fans have any contacts in their library system? I know they have online which issues they have, but if I'm going to copy some, I might need to get some sort of authorization. I think Mr. Birkmayer would give his okay.

With any luck, but I'm working this weekend, I'll at least get them inventoried this weekend.

I have the IHN back to 1969 or 1970. As opposed to you, my copies are on a top shelf in a closet, but they have gotten somewhat out of order.

Assuming that he is still alive, your best bet might be to contact the original publisher Don Birkmayer (RPI '49), who moved to Ithaca when he retired.

Thanks, I've talked to him, in fact brought a Sun reporter with me to interview him a couple of years ago. Article in the Sun resulted.

He no longer has anything. It was all given to the guy who kept it up for a couple more years, before it folded. I've got his name, but no address (western Mass).

I know I'm short a couple of issues in the post '66 years. That's when I started. When I index them, I may contact you about those I'm missing.

But I need pre '67 issues.

No complaints about how we're playing, but there's no way to justify giving us a 1st place vote over a red-hot Clarkson team that beat us soundly in our own building.

I guess one voter in each poll believes in win percentage über alles.

This is the latest in the season we have had at least one #1 vote since 2009 (5 in each poll on 1/19).

Here's the PWR and I'll add the polls after they come out tomorrow. Posters have talked on another thread that there doesn't seem to be an easy way to find old PWRs, except maybe at the end of the season. That's one of the reasons I decided to do this every week.

Polls should be interesting given that Clarkson, St. Cloud, and Notre Dame all lost this weekend.

I predict Cornell will be up to 3rd this week, coming very close to 2nd. Even as we're in the midst of one of our best seasons in recent memory, I think the team is still flying under the radar because our offense is so balanced that none of our guys show up near the top of national scoring statistics. Our defensive solidity is almost taken for granted. In contrast to some of Schafer's best teams, this year's success comes without our PP or PK being outstanding, yet we lead the nation in Scoring Margin--this suggests our even strength play has been great.

This seems about right to me, too.  We might even stay in 4th though I think our trace first place votes will be back.

The bold is very important, I think -- we have the balance that Schafer's best teams did.  We're going to need that when we play the best up tempo opponents to avoid the "sparring partner" trauma of those NC$$ losses like getting outshot by 20 at Wisco (http://www.tbrw.info/seasons/2006/box20060326.pdf) and at Minny (http://www.tbrw.info/seasons/2005/box20050327.pdf).  This squad has the ability to push the opponent back deep into their zone.  That takes a lot of pressure off the D and goalie.

the PP at times has little to show for some really good puck movement.. Sometimes that just starts to feed on itself.   just a slight uptick in goals from the PP this time of year would be huge. Depth is something that really shows on the PK, the ability to roll out multiple lines of solid PK is big

I'll leave it to someone like Jim, who understands the ins & outs of copying & pasting poll results, to post the complete poll here.

But the men are #2 in this morning's USCHO poll, w/ 15 first-place votes(!)

Women are still at #6.

As usual, the USA Today poll is running later than the USCHO poll.

unless we beat Harvard and Clarkson i doubt we get any higher and if we did run that table we probably would deserve it on record alone, as to whether we would be the best I doubt it until we actually played someone OC.

Way too early to make any statement like this.  As Annie Savoy said, "it's a long season and you gotta trust it."  Five more RS weeks plus the conference tournies means we could be seeded anywhere from #1 to golf (http://playoffstatus.com/ncaahockey/ncaahockeytournseedprob.html).

FWIW, PlayoffStatus.com current odds for Cornell:

.99 ECAC QF
.94 ECAC SF
.69 ECAC F
.41 ECAC Champion

.99 NC$$ Bid
.70 NC$$ QF
.43 NC$$ SF
.24 NC$$ F
.13 NC$$ Champion

Que sera, sera.

16 teams in the NC tourney. If each team had equal probability, P[NC] = 0.0625. So P[NC] = 0.13 is not that bad.

And, as Upprdeck points out, beating Harvard and/or Clarkson is necessary to hold our position. If we do, P[NC] might even increase.

We're not yet in a position to say we will beat any other team most nights, but we are in position to say realistically we could beat any other team on a given night. Given where we started out this season, I'm overjoyed that this is where we are.

Here's all, except for USA Women's, which doesn't come out till tomorrow, and I refuse to be bothered by that. Or, maybe I should say, I am bothered by that.

Anyone looking for PWR, look up a number of posts.

I'm not bothered much by the differences between the polls, except that we get 15 votes for first in USCHO, about 30%, and NONE in USA. What's up with that.

I see the table, I see Cornell is #2 in one poll. But, Lord, are we really the second-best time in the nation? Am I refusing to believe? Or do older alumni simply have more experience having their dreams crushed? Even the 2009 lacrosse title game makes me, ah, uncertain that we're a frozen four team let alone a potential national champion. Still, it's worth scoping out hotels for Lake Placid now.

And worth noting 3 of the 4 NCAA regional sites are driving distance.

East Regional, Webster Bank Arena – Bridgeport, Connecticut (Host: Fairfield and Yale)
Northeast Regional, DCU Center – Worcester, Massachusetts (Host: Holy Cross)
Midwest Regional, PPL Center – Allentown, Pennsylvania (Host: Penn State)
West Regional, Premier Center – Sioux Falls, South Dakota (Host: North Dakota)

St. Paul is a fabulous hockey town but it involves an airplane.

Yet I bought our tickets last week on Southwest and plan to hook up with a high school friend who will probably extol Minnesota's superiority.

Pathetically Parenthetically , has anyone else here noticed the number of B1G schools in the top 20? Since their inception as a league they have had approximately exactly zero (0) Frozen Four appearances.  Maybe this will be the year they break the ice.::smashfreak::

i thought i wanted to go to allentown but if we do i assume penn state will make the tournament and join us there. see also, bc or bu in worcester/bridgeport. there are other new england schools, of course, but i don't think they'll bring a larger crowd than us.

Right now PSU isn't even in the tournament,

FWIW, if North Dakota falls into the 4-band, someone from the east will go to Sioux Falls, because St. Cloud can't play NoDak in the first round.  So just in case, go Sioux!

Nazi Dakota is currently 12.  Plenty of time for both they and Pedo State to drop out of the tourney altogether.

you haven't considered that we might get assigned to allentown, in which case they will definitely have made the tournament

I decided to put up the entire PWR, so people could see how poor our SOS truly is, and possibly explain why we still have to prove something to fans, myself included, and media.

Our OOC opponents are underlined, but not bolded. The highest is BU just above Miami, who is the second from the bottom NCHC team.

5/12 of the ECAC teams are in the top half, but 3 of those are in the bottom 4 of the top half. 2 of the ECAC teams are in the bottom 4 of all teams.

We are a good team and if we can beat Clarkson sometime, Union at least once, and get to the ECAC finals, I'll be really happy and a believer. If not, I'll be happy and believe next year should be even better.

I'll put up the rest once the polls are released.

There's still plenty of hockey to be played before getting too comfortable. The ultimate goals is win the Frozen 4, not win a USCHO poll (which we all know is BS and pointless).

Between just Notre Dame and Cornell (the two teams getting almost all the #1 votes), I think Cornell has a good argument for being the #1 ranked team. We haven't beaten great teams, but we also haven't lost to bad teams. Can you really rank a team that's lost to Sacred Heart at home above Cornell at this point in the season?

Their position as #1 in the polls is definitely tenuous, but I think they have a good argument to be there at this point in time. They have done what teams with a weak strength-of-schedule need to do: have a winning percentage over 9% higher than everyone else.

Ottawa pulled the goalie and scored on one of its 13 shots..  much like the first Miami a totally dominating game we let get away..

I dont know if we are the best either.. Still I have seen NorthEastern play in person and we are better than them and they are 11th so if we are top 10 quality and have by far the best record who is to say?   I think there are a dozen teams with probably a bit more elite skill guys on offense, but are those teams as well rounded every night which is the one thing you can say about this team so far,  the Clarkson game being the one blemish to showing up every night and giving your self a shot to win.

Winning the Frozen Four kinda guarantees we win two regional games right?

@CU2007- If we win the national title, you'd actually be upset if we lost the ECAC title along the way?

Let's keep our eyes on the prize, people.

Not at all, but if we don't - it would be nice to hang an ECAC championship banner. My point is that both matter, not that a national championship wouldn't make up for losing in the ECACs

Worth noting that a week ago in Potsdam, Harvard and Dartmouth put nine past Kielly into the Clarkson net.  They managed one this weekend playing a not-very-heathy Cornell team at home.

I'm not following what there is to be skeptical about.  PWR is math.  The polls are just a bunch of old white dudes' opinions like ours'.

If you doubt the metrics capture an underlying objective value, well, yeah -- I'm sure they don't, but that loose coupling of the indicator and the indicated is always with us; it didn't just pop into being when we got to be #1.

You are what your record says you are, and right now, despite a lousy SOS on the PWR, despite EZAC bias from the polls, we are #1.  By definition, that means... we are #1.

C'est une pipe.

Yeah, but what is math? Our #1 ranking says that we are doing almost as well as possible against a mediocre slate. That doesn't make it *not* a mediocre slate and it isn't nuts to be skeptical. Blind obedience to the machines is the crazy path here when we know the inputs and are identifying the issues with them. It's not like we're mumbling about intangibles.

Well, I too am almost 55 and just got off the elliptical :-P. But I'm also a cancer survivor who can stand to lose a few pounds, and I'd like to see Cornell win a team championship in an NCAA sport (sorry, polo team) before I kick. I was there in Foxboro in 2009 for the game that shall not be named, and this year's team at least gives us a chance to dream. There are some very good teams out there, but I don't see anything like Maine with Paul Kariya on the horizon.

We have a solid and deep team, and hopefully will get Green and Malott back soon—I thought we were running out of gas at the end of the Dartmouth game. If we can maintain our health and stay aggressive on offense, I think we can be in the mix.

If we don't get Green back (no reason to think we wouldn't, as far as I know), we are in huge trouble. Mallott is a great player, but we are way deeper at forward.

Re: rankings, expectations, etc.: yeah, Cornell isn't the best team in the country. The team with the #1 ranking, only twenty games into the season, rarely is. In addition to the small sample size it has to work with, the PWR is imperfect in how it doesn't take into account score differential, or lucky bounces, or injuries. And even if we were the best team going into the NCAAs, our chances of winning it all would be, what, 1-in-8?

What our amazing start affords us is an opportunity--we have positioned ourselves to make a run, in the ECAC and in the NCAA. That's all you can ask for going into a single-elimination hockey tournament. Expecting anything more than that is just setting yourself up to be disappointed. In the end, it will be the Friday and Saturday nights at Lynah, not any number of championships, that we look back on most fondly.

Actually, most of the Friday and Saturday nights at Lynah moosh into each other over time. (Except for, off the top of my head, vs. Harvard in fall '95; vs. Vermont in fall '96; vs. Princeton in winter '94; etc.) It's the nights at other schools' rinks that are burned into my head. Many of my favorite memories from days on the Hill burnish following the team on the road and the resultant hijinks to a nostalgic sheen.

Since the 16-team tournament began in 2003, the #1 overall seed has won the championship four times:  Wisconsin in 2006 (screw you, Brian Elliott!), BU in 2009, BC in 2012, and Denver last year.  That may not correspond with #1 in the polls at the start of the NCAAs, but who cares what humans think anyway.

Arctic Monkeys and shoe gaze are from way before the current brats' generation.  By definition, if we have heard of anything they are listening to it's the equivalent of the Osmonds.

I've always assumed his reaction indicates a scene that was cut.  Yes, he's been in enough rinks to hate the sound of the synthesized barrel organ, but even so, Reg seems to be recalling something very specific.

Like everyone else on this forum, I'm thrilled that we're #1 but also skeptical about the ranking's accuracy.

One thing I'd really like to see is our powerplay being more effective. Currently we're ranked #41 at 16.7%, but with our offense being ranked #9 I don't see why we shouldn't be at least in the top 25, which would require at least 20%. Your thoughts?

IIRC, we started out really well, holding above 30% for the first few weeks. Then, when the PK hit a rough spot, the PP % started falling as well. The PK has recovered, but not the PP.  Really, the 5x5 play has buoyed the offense all season, which is a difference in past teams. The best teams in the Schafer era have always been strong on special teams. It's one of those things that makes me a bit nervous.

Edit: It's an even scarier picture when you only look at conference games. The PP% in ECAC games is only 11.7%, ranking #11 out of 12. Eek. But the ECAC PK% is 90%, the best in league play.

Not to mention this team hasn't scored more than 3 goals in a game in nearly a month, but they're still hanging in the Top-10 for GPG.

Watching most of the games, I've really liked how our PP has looked. This is very subjective, but I think we're getting better chances than the results suggest. Unlike some of our recent years, where our PP has looked ugly.

It seems this Cornell hockey team succeeds because of a team and teamwork rather than being borne upon the backs of a few superstars. This conflicts with current team sports wisdom, or at least current sports reporting, where superstars are the cause success and failure. This attitude is reflected in (or a partner to) the current opinion that the efforts of a few political superstars is responsible for the success or failure of government.

Me too.  We cycle low well, we take advantage of guys actually breaking to the net.

Quote from: SwampyLike everyone else on this forum, I'm thrilled that we're #1 but also skeptical about the ranking's accuracy.

Malott spent a decent amount of time on the PP before he got hurt, no? Could account for at least some of the difference.

Didn't he just get hurt during the Colgate weekend?

My guess: in 2003 they were #1 in one poll and #2 in the other, and in the 60s and 70s they didn't have polls. No idea if either of those things are right. Actually, the most likely is that USCHO is incorrect.

They didn't get all the first place votes in 2003.  I guess they do not recognize the polls from the Archaic Age.

Cornell and St. Cloud swap spots.  Men drop to #4 still receiving 7 first place votes.  Not a whole lot of spread in the top four.  Quickly drops off in a tight race for #5 and #6, then the rest of the field.

Women are up to #5.

I have no idea if this is accurate.
Well actually I have some idea, it's not accurate.
Why they put in St. Anselm is beyond me,
but trying to switch to Comparison layout is all screwy.
Hopefully they'll correct it.

It is accurate. The women's tournament is a "national collegiate" championship, which means that Division II schools are technically eligible (https://www.sbncollegehockey.com/womens-hockey/2017/11/28/16707432/the-saint-anselm-explained-number-one-pairwise-ncaa-womens-hockey-tournament).

I think this is wonderful and they should place the D3 mens champion in the D1 tourney draw.

Thanks, I was confused since St. Anselm has not recently been on prior top PWR. However, since you jogged my memory, I do remember seeing them on other PWR. How they suddenly reappeared is interesting. If they work up to a top 4 seed, wow. Only Div 1 teams played were Holy Cross and Sacred Heart. Hopefully your reference is correct, and they can be moved down. But whichever team they displace will be mad.

I expected Mankato to run all the way to #2.  I dare say they deserve it.

Still #2 in both polls. Not that it matters, but any thoughts as to why Notre Dame (#2 in PWR via their better RPI vs Cornell) still haven't convinced the voters (#5 in USCHO; #4 in USA Today, who by now usually buy into the computer numbers.

They've lost four of their last five. That's not a small thing.

But according to KRACH they have a 65% chance of beating Penn State on Saturday.

This means even less now, in fact I think once postseason play starts, they should stop polling, no one cares and there should not be a final end of season poll. We ave the playoffs, nothing else matters, even for discussing.

But, for completeness sake, I'll carry on.:-|

In all honesty now that we have metrics like PWR there is no point to have polls anymore.  They were always BS anyway.  Nobody watches even a fraction of the teams and all the polling is "move my team up, rank the teams I've seen, copy everybody else on the ones I haven't."

The only reason I can see for polls is to start discussion in the early part of the season, before there's enough data to get a reasonable PWR.

That's fair.  Although I think even then polls aren't about real performance but last year's best finishers, a couple anticipated drops from graduations, seasoned with recruiting hype.
