Title: John Spencer and others are dead
Post by: marty on November 04, 2016, 10:54:38 AM
While banking this summer the branch manager gave me a link that is a lot of fun and an elite time waster.  This website (http://fultonhistory.com) contains scans of upstate NY newspapers.  It can be used for genealogy but I find it fun to scan old papers looking for articles about friends and relatives.

Here is a news flash from the Watertown Daily Times. Laughed every time the article talked about what a great game the goalie had even though he let in 6. Even with 40 saves, that's a save % of .870. For all I know he did stand on his head, which makes the Cornell squad look even more impressive.

Bullock was one helluva goalie.  His play in the ECAC championship game that year was something to see...and very frustrating for Big Red fans.

I'm sure he was! First team AA doesn't happen by accident. I'm just saying, sight unseen, the NCAA final wasn't his finest hour and while there is no reason to be needlessly cruel in the local paper, maybe ease off the praise throttle a bit.

I saw almost every Cornell home game in the 67/68, 68/69 and 69/70 seasons, along with the ECAC games at the garden those years.  Dryden at his best, in college anyway, during the first two of those seasons, and Cropper was very good as well. No Dryden performance matched what Bullock did in the ECAC finals in 1970.  Maybe the Chris Terreri show at the 1985 Hockey East championships was equal, maybe. While I didn't see the 1970 NCAA final I can say that there is no reason to back off praise for Bullock at the ECACs that year. It's just something you don't, and can't, forget.

I don't frequent this forum often, but thought I'd share this cartoon that I've kept. I don't remember which newspaper, but I think it was north country NY, Watertown?
