Title: Cornell vs. Dartmouth 2/20/16
Post by: Iceberg on February 20, 2016, 09:56:48 AM
Senior night in Hanover. Thompson Arena's 40th year and I don't think the Big Red have the greatest record there. The last I check it has actually been pretty even in terms of wins and losses since 1975. Of course, recent history hasn't been so good against these green goobers in general. 3 points separate these two

Schafer is 7-11-2 (http://www.tbrw.info/?/weekly_Updates/schafer_Opps_ECAC.html) at Hanover, his worst losing road record and the only one anywhere but at the North Country.

This is particularly irritating to elderly fans who enjoyed complete dominance against the Big Green in the decade (http://www.tbrw.info/index.html?/weekly_Updates/cornell_H2H_by_Team.html) prior to Schafer.

If my numbers are correct (which is always questionable), last night was Schafer's 700th as head coach (not counting the special guest star games over the years).

He is 387-230-83 .612.

I've never had a problem with the Dartmouth broadcast, but my enjoyment of the game is being uh affected by the uh announcers uhh speech patterns by saying "and uh" "but uh" "as uh" etc. There's at least 2 New England "uhs" in every sentence during play.

In the 5 games we have scored just 1 goal this year, we have given up 2 goals in regulation.

3 1-0 wins, 2 1-2 overtime losses.

scary how close we have come to five 1-0 wins with the 2 losses it was very late goals to even tie it.

Interesting article I ran across yesterday before this game. There are a few others worth reading too.

Gaudet is a goon, but...

"The late 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of Dartmouth's women's hockey program to national heights. The men's team, down at the heels for a decade, began to rebound when Gaudet was hired away from Brown, where he'd landed his first head coaching job. For a couple of weeks upon his return, Gaudet slept on a mattress on the men's locker room floor, a lamp alongside so he could read at night.

'I had the showers and the big bathroom, and I felt right at home,' he said with a chuckle."

That's great material.

there seem to be a million stories about him being liked and respected by other coaches and the refs.

I enjoyed the article, too, especially after just being at Thompson last night. The first time I went to Dartmouth, Cornell was playing there during Winter Carnival weekend and the game did begin at 11 a.m., something Gaudent makes a reference to in the article.

We're not only the school lamenting how much better the atmosphere was at home games:

"As bad as basketball was at Thompson, hockey was electrifying mayhem. Processions of students snaked along campus sidewalks and under the football stadium's east bleachers on freezing nights, leading to sellout crowds. Spurred on by a frenzied pep band that attended every game, the students — whose presence at times stretched over four or five seating sections — helped create a substantial home-ice advantage."

After seeing the sparse student turnout for Dartmouth's Senior Night last night (the students didn't even fill up one section), and seeing how most of the fans didn't stick around for the Senior Night ceremony (and Dartmouth has 10 seniors this year!), I'm sure the Dartmouth equivalent of eLynah was mourning the loss of school spirit for the hockey games. It's also difficult to image a "frenzied pep band" after seeing this year's version of the Dartmouth pep band, although they did do a nice parade around the rink between the second and third periods.
