Title: Mudpuddles Albany??
Post by: Micaela on March 19, 2003, 06:34:36 PM
I preface this with homage to the woofing Gods.  Whelan -  I will go outside, turn around three times, spit and curse when I'm done.  (And you know I can curse.)

Has anyone given thought to a Saturday post-game location in the event we need to celebrate?  Heard any rumors?  It would be a shame to witness my first ECAC championship and not get to celebrate it properly.  (I've heard many stories about drinking out of the Whitelaw Trophy.)  Besides, who would want to miss possibly the last chance to see the Doug drunk?

Anythuing but Jillians!

Am going out scouting tonite. Will report later. Off the top of my head I can't think of a single place that is Dunbarsesque or Mudpuddlesque (tho i'm only guessing on the last one since i've never set foot inside the damn place. stupid Harvard!):-(

However there is this pub-like place slightly bigger than D-bars that is on the dark side. It has atmosphere and is only a block or 2 from Pepsi. Will check it out tonite.

When I was young and dinosaurs roamed the earth, there was a bar/wing joint called Harpo's between the SUNYA undergrad ghetto (all those streets named after trees) and downtown.  Very Dunbaresque.

Maybe I'm totally confused...  wasn't the victory party at Mudpuddles unofficially "officially" sponsored by the ECAC or ORDA or something?

yeah. believe it is still there but out of the way when you are at the Pepsi.

went looking around. a few huge welcome ECAC hockey banners up.
not really much around. in the same building as the Pepsi, below the main entrance on Pearl St is a place called Broadway Joe's (or something like that) that had a wecome hockey fans sign. Cause it is so close and cause they are openly embracing hockey fans I have a sneaking suspicion this this will end up being the place to be to mingle. don't know about underage admission tho.

jillians is just too damn big to feel like you are amongst a group of hockey fans - even if a couple hundred were there. there are 3 floors and each is 6 or more times the size of any c-town bar.

there is this other place - the most dunbarsesque one - called the _____ cafe i(the name is escaping me right now) it is a block further away from pepsi than Jillians adn I think that it would be pretty lax about ID's .... but not sure.

And McGeary's is always a fun place - might be the atmosphere that everyone is looking for but a little further away. Everytime I've gone there I've gotten carded - so probably noone underage could get in.

Well. don't know if this was any help or not. Hope so.

I don't think so, since I got the impression Cornell fans made a bigger deal about Mudpuddles than anyone else.  I believe Rich is our local Mudpuddles authority.  Rich?

What we decide just doesn't matter if the players aren't going to be there. Can't imagine we can do anything but ask some players' parents at the game.

And I don't imagine that they'll know until after (if) it happens. The best idea - if we win on Sat stick around, celebrate with other Cornellians at the rink and then head off to the then determined location.

If you are just looking for a place to hang after Friday's game - check out this Joe Broadways (or Broadway Joe's ... whatever) place (cause it is close and seems to be the place trying to be the main hockey hangout) and if there is nothing much going on there move on down the street to the next place. They are all in a 5 or so block radius and most all are on South Pearl St. Overall, have a great time everyone, enjoy the hockey and pray repeatedly for a change from last year's horrid, horrid results - I don't care if you aren't religious!

Respectfully, I'd ask that we cheer loudly for our team and save our prayers for our servicemen and women who are currently in harms way, regardless of how you may feel about this turn in world events.

Well, that is a touch melodramatic.  I am going to root on both of my teams, but I am going to spend my time on this board worrying about the hockey players.

Wow, I had no idea.  Since John set me up, I might as well get it off my chest.

I had a great time the last two years at the ECAC championships in Lake Placid.  Lot's of friends, and lots of good hockey (though my heart could've done without the 2 final results :`( ).  I was a more than a little bewildered each time I suggested heading over to Mudpuddles for some fun and libations, I was met by Cornellians sullenly explaining to me that "you can't go there unless you win the Championship.  It's the champions bar only."  Huh?

The source of my confusion stems from the '96 and '97 championships.  Fantastic weekends, and fans from all teams packed that place every night.  Before Semis, after Semis, before and after the Championship game.  Didn't matter.  It's a good place with a bit of everything.  Great games (everything from shufflepuck, Bubble Hockey, and even that adjustable sloping putting green game), 2 bars, dance floor, an over-under admittance policy, and plenty of room.  I met fans from other schools and had a good time with them.  Those years, the team took the Whitelaw there because it happened to 1) hold many people and 2) be across the street from the arena.  And yes...drinking out of the cup your team just won is darned fun.  :-)

So I don't know where this "Mudpuddles superstition" came from, but it's too bad.  I don't think there was any team that saw it as "The one and only Champions bar" other than us.  Last year, I spoke to the person who was most disappointed by Cornell Nation's avoidance of the place: the proprietor.  He wanted to know why Cornell never brought all our fans there anymore, and I tried to explain this superstition that arose.  We both shrugged our shoulders.  Maybe it was the karma of staying away that did us in for the Finals in '01 and '02.  Or not.

With the ECAC's move to Albany, it doesn't matter anymore.  But I hope Cornell fans don't get caught up with any more silly drinking rules like that.  We'll find a place, meet other fans, and have a good time.  And should the team bless us this year with a championship, I hope they let the Faithful masses join them in the celebration.  Albany did a good job with the Frozen Four in '01, and hope they do with the ECAC's as well.
