Title: Any place to watch in DC?
Post by: Mike Hedrick \'01 on March 19, 2003, 05:54:39 PM
Does anyone know of any place that is showing the ECAC tornament games here in the DC area?    Last yeah, we managed to talk the guy at ESPNZone into putting the Quinnipiac game in Worcester on one screen and some bar near Chinatown actually turned on the UHN game for us, but both of those were just luck and persistence.   Any info on an "official" screening of the games would be appreciated!

Dave Lytel posted this on another thread:

Please pass this on to members of the Cornell community in the greater Washington area!

The Cornell Club of Washington is pleased to invite you to watch the men's hockey team take on Brown on Friday afternoon in an ECAC semi-final game. We will be gathering at Fran O'Brien's Sports Bar at the Capitol Hilton in downtown Washington (1001 16th Street, NW at the corner of K Street). The closest metro stop is Farragut North. Coverage of the game is scheduled to begin at 4:00. There is no charge to attend, but both food and beverages will be available. If you are unable to be there when the game begins, you can figure that it will conclude around 6:00.

If Cornell wins, we will play in the championship game on Saturday at 7:00. If we lose on Friday night, then we would play in the consolation game on Saturday at 4:00. Either way, we will also be gathering at Fran O'Brien's for the Saturday game.

Should Cornell continue to win we would likely play in the first round of the NCAA championships on March 28th and 29th.

You do not need to RSVP to this invitation -- just show up!

David (and other DC area folks),

I may be wrong, but doesn't Friday's Cornell-Brown game (ECAC semifinal 1) begin at 3:30, not at 4:00? If so, I assume the good people at Fran O'Brien's will let us have a screen then.

If anyone wants to head over a bit early to Fran O'Brien's, I'm going to see if they can put the UPenn basketball game on for a bit(starts at 2:35).  Let's go Ivy League!

I thought I would bump this up once more.  The announcement mentions this week's games in Providence but does not specify whether there will be a similar gathering.  Does anyone know for sure?  Thanks!

Have not heard anything, would offer up my place but I shall not be there.
I could check the likely hood of espnzone for ya if you want since it is a Sat. noon time game, it should be empiter than normal. I've got a friend who works there...

actually, since both (hopefully, both!) are noon time games, you should be able to talk people into tuning a tv into the games...
but if there was college bb on.... ::rolleyes::

Yeah, last year we managed to talk ESPNZone into putting the Quinnipiac game on one screen.  For UHN we had to find some hole in the wall near Chinatown.

Thanks!

When there was talks of the CU/Clarkson game on tv, I had asked my friend and he said that it was more likely if there weren't a lot of people and if you come in packs :-)
I've also been in there on a Saturday around noon and it's been somewhat empty.
And actually, since I'll be in there tomorrow night, I can see if they draw up their schedules a few days in advance...and maybe hint at showing some college hockey...

and in my quickie scouting trip for ya, the guy behind the booth didn't seem to have a problem with a request for a college hockey game for noontime at espnzone. he said it'd be on one of the feeds around the big screen downstairs...not sure whether this meant, please come in and ask for it or we'll have a college hockey game on, since I didn't specify the game. if it's around the big screen, if you can sit at one of the tables (when it's not event time - then they charge extra $$$) you get audio for your table as well...and you'll be able to hear as long as it's relatively quiet and there are no annoying red wings fans around you.

Thanks so much, Judy!   That definitely sounds like the best bet so far!   I really appreciate the info!  (BTW, say hi to Melissa A. for me.)

Mike, I'll be there with my dad (who's apparently becoming quite the hockey fan).  Do you think it's worth posting to the DC alumni listserve?

What's with the unprovoked slam on Red Wings fans? :-(

hey! Judy started it! Blame her. She had to remind me of spending the evening of game 7 of last year's Western Conference finals at ESPNZone surrounded by loud victorious Red Wings fans. There's really nothing wrong with Red Wings fans - except on that nite. As a diehard Avs fan, that loss in the presence of a crapload of merry Detroit fans hurt way more than usual. Not as much as last years Tourney loss to Harvard but close. Remember how it felt when half the Harvard team came over to the ice in front of us, flipped us off and/or flaunted their win? It felt like that! Grrrrr.

Well, I plan to be there with two other folks.   Hopefully, they'll actually put the game on for us.  (Last year they did for Quinnipiac and refused for UNH.  Apparently boat racing is very popular.)  Perhaps if posting it got more people to come they'd be more willing to accomodate us.

DC folks,

If the whole ESPNZone thing doesn't work, I strongly recommend heading over to The Rock on 6th Street, NW (opposite the east side of the MCI Center). I gotta say, I have had nothing but bad experiences when it comes to watching college hockey at ESPNZone. The people at The Rock are MUCH more hockey-friendly. They've let me have a TV to watch much less significant Cornell games than this one over the last three years or so. I'm almost pretty sure they subscribe to DirecTV's Sports Pack. Yeah, The Rock is a dive with lousy food, but because they have three floors, there are plenty of isolated, semi-private corners on the upper floors with TVs that they can dedicate to college hockey without pissing anybody else off.

If that fails, here are several other options in the District:

* The Grand Slam, which is the sports bar in the Grand Hyatt at 10th and H NW. They once let me watch a Cornell lax playoff game in 2000.

* Senators, which is in the Holiday Inn near Capitol Hill on the 400 block of New Jersey Ave NW. Not so friendly, but seldom used, so easy to get TVs switched to the right thing.

* The Lucky Bar, on Connecticut Ave NW, just north of Rhode Island and M. A soccer-oriented place run by a Welshman. Very friendly. Best to check if they can get the regional sports networks.

* Capitol Lounge, on Capitol Hill -- Pennsylvania Ave SE between 3rd and 4th. Also primarily a soccer bar. Love the soccer scarves draped everywhere behind the bar. Best to check if they get the regional sports networks.

I believe they are still going to be showing the game at the Capital Hilton where they showed the ECAC games.  Many people I know are planning on going there.

This is getting confusing.  Where should I go?
Title: I just called the Capital Hilton
Post by: Mike Hedrick \'01 on March 28, 2003, 03:15:02 PM
I called Fran O'Brien's at the Capital Hilton and they said they ARE showing the game for the Cornell Club.    I don't know why I didn't think to call them sooner, but this is good news.
