Title: Russian Red Stars
Post by: ACM on December 24, 2013, 06:18:54 PM
On January 3, Cornell will play an exhibition game against the Red Stars of the Russian Junior Hockey League, or MHL (Molodezhnaya Hokkeynaya Liga).

Here is the schedule for their tour (http://mhl.khl.ru/en/news/index.php?ELEMENT_ID=287662&SECTION_ID=1). You should be pleased to know that we are considered to be one of "the strongest NCAA hockey clubs operating in New England's counties."

Here is their preview of their game against Yale (http://mhl.khl.ru/en/news/index.php?ELEMENT_ID=293492&SECTION_ID=1) on 12/27. Please try not to laugh too hard.

Here is the roster (http://mhl.khl.ru/en/news/index.php?ELEMENT_ID=288850&SECTION_ID=163). Wish me luck.

The goalies, Romanov, Volkov and Khaniarova make for a good start. For Blazhievskii and Varfolomiev, good luck. For Shakvorostov, couldn't you buy a vowel for after the Shak part? Soliankin-Pasternak is like the Princeton player of 2003-7 years ago, Goeckner-Zoeller.

Usually, an announcer's skills are degraded by phlegm in the throat. Here it could be an ally. Good luck.

But were outshot 45-30, so it wasn't an easy win.

Pure gold.

The CU web site has no mention of tonight's contest.
Is it still a go, or is it too cold for the Russkies??

Much of Cornell U is on autopilot / holiday break until next week. With the bad weather, it might be challenging, perhaps dangerous, for an employee living far from Cornell to drive onto campus and log onto the CRTs that have CU's access to the world wide web mainframes containing Cornell's website. RS-232 cables have limited distance, I recall.

The Red Stars' game scheduled for yesterday afternoon at Merrimack (http://www.merrimackathletics.com/sports/mice/2013-14/releases/20140102aczvdd) (which was not listed on their original schedule (http://mhl.khl.ru/en/news/index.php?ELEMENT_ID=287662&SECTION_ID=1)), was cancelled due to the weather. I haven't received word yet as to whether they'll be able to make it to Ithaca for tonight' game.

Loving the Russian flag. Did they do the anthem?

Yes, they had a recording of the anthem.

And indeed, it appears we are going to see all of them.  Esposito scored a goal and got a huge hometown hand.

I love that the team captains had a gift exchange before the match... kind of like how little pennants are traditionally exchanged before an international soccer match. Kirill Gotovets was, understandably as a Russian speaker, getting lots of attention from some Red Stars after the game, which was interesting to see. The team took full advantage of their size and physicality tonight and really dominated all facets of the game. I think it bodes pretty well for the return to league play. Also great to see the local boy getting his first collegiate goal.

The Red Stars looked like a young and rather  small team,   they could skate, but as this was the last game of a long tour - and they had  bus  problems  getting here -  the kids looked really exhausted.   Final shots on goal were 52-22 for us -
The Cornell team  seemed  to let up a bit in the third period after it was already  6-0 at end of 2 periods.

I would like to see a rematch when the Red Stars are fresh. It was a fun game and they showed talent in spurts, but there was a major case of bus legs and general road weariness out there.

It would be interesting to have the Russian team talk about all the schools they played. Maybe it was fatigue, I don't know, but they were outshot by Harvard, outshot Yale, and were pretty even with Colgate. And yet they lost all the games. I wonder how much practice as a team they had, especially on PP and PK. But even if they were tired tonight, we were still a much better team.

And as Age said in between periods, "How did Colgate almost lose to them?" And then to go on and put Minny in their own consolation game.::screwy::

Let's not also forget that we sat our #1 goalie (Iles), half our defense (Ryan, Willcox, Lewis), our captain (JMcCarron), and another regular forward (Knisley). Dustin Mowrey didn't play in the third, anyone have any idea why? We don't need another injury.
