Down 1 to 16.

Any ranking that puts Berkeley at #20 tied with Georgetown is simply baloney. Berkeley is easily top 10 and probably better and UCLA is top 15 at least. Statutory schools are killed by the "selectivity" bullshit while not enough weight is put on quality of faculty.

The BCS sucks. The only solution is a playoff.
Any ranking that factors in retention and graduation rates as much as this one does rewards finishing schools with rampant grade inflation, i.e., exactly where today's helicopter mommies and daddies, who worry the most about things like rankings, want to send their precious little angels. The horrible thing is how the education "business" itself is starting to buy into this nonsense, focusing on product rather than process. I weep.
"Selectivity" is important if you got in. If you didn't, then it's BS.
Twas ever thus. In any group of ten undergrads, in any school, in any year since 1850, 2 are slack-jawed imbeciles looking for amusement, 6 are skittish grade hounds looking for credentials, and 2 are sincere scholars looking for Truth (1 of whom doesn't need academia and becomes happily autodidactic).
USnooze and other rankings tend to concentrate on how well the business is servicing its biggest client. That seems fair.

Hey, stop saying skittish grade hound like it's a bad thing!

They buy geegaws and keep the economy going so the USG can keep cutting my company ridiculous checks. I owe them my job -- I have nothing against them.

Not just the USG. My company makes stuff that goes into all of those geegaws. Keep buying those flat-screens, iPones, laptops, tablets, etc., you grade-hounds. And while you're at it, start buying LED lights, too.

Blessed are the Millenials (http://dilbert.com/dyn/str_strip/000000000/00000000/0000000/100000/00000/0000/700/100756/100756.strip.zoom.gif), for they will buy anything advertised with self-referential irony.

Whoa, freaky. When reading that comic, I could swear that I traveled through a wormhole to the ILDN thread...
