Title: Cornell @ Syracuse lax - Syr13-12
Post by: billhoward on April 10, 2013, 03:22:51 PM
Scoring
Cornell   6  2  2  2  - 12
Syracuse  4  2  3  3  - 13

... one save so far both teams in first period, i believe
... Cornell first score in the second comes 11 minutes in
... Syracuse scoreless for more than 15 mins until midway in the third, then a run
... Connor English from on the crease hits the pipe with 10 secs to play. That was the game.

Could be a career day for somebody. I'd vote for Fiore having it. 6pm on ESPNU today, Weds 4/10).

Cornell up 3-0 early, with possession. 10 left in the first.

EDIT: 4-0, 9:38 left.

4-2. Second Syracuse goal a very nice shot through an unintentional screen.

Pannell has the no-look shot down cold. 5-2.

HAHAHAHA give the Syracuse goalie 2 for flinching. He looked terrified but the shot bounced off the post. Cornell is winning faceoffs today.

5-4. Cornell D not... much. Syracuse gets possession, they score.

6-4 Cornell. Syracuse packing the D in tight so it takes more time... but Cornell finds a way eventually.
End of the first.

Winning faceoffs, but no saves!  Always something...
Now 6-5 and Syracuse EMO.

Tie game. Syracuse gets some lucky bounces. They strip, the ball pops right back to them. Cornell knocks the ball free twice on the other end, both times, right back to someone on Syracuse. The second time, the disjointed D leaves a look at the net wide open.

Fiori making some saves now.  Keep fingers crossed.  7-6 with possession. Hold for last shot..

Very sloppy for both sides here. Cornell broke on top 7-6 on a good (but not ideal) shot from Buczek. Cornell is having trouble breaking the Syracuse D this period but did just miss one from point blank. Hasn't won a faceoff in the second period. Cornell possession with just over a minute left in the half.

Buczek with another with :39 left in the half.

8-6 Big Red. ... and halftime.

Not a great period for Cornell but the score in the period was 2-2 so it could have been worse.

9-7 halfway through the third. ESPN3 feed now looks like the old scrambled porn channels, except when you get an idea of what is happening it isn't nearly as titillating.

9-8 while I was typing.

Cornell got it to 10-8 on a nice goal from Donovan with ~40 seconds then give up a cheap one with 3 seconds left. Total defensive breakdown as Syracuse brings it in from OOB. 10-9 end of 3.

Cornell kills 1 minute EMO but a short bit after, D is late to slide Syr gets an easy look. 10-10.

Nice passing gets the ball to Van Bourgondien who puts one in from (I think) his off-hand side. 11-10 CU.

13-11, 5:10 left. Syracuse moving the ball well and finding the back of the net.

English with a great solo effort to make it 13-12. Cornell gets a good look but Syracuse makes the save. Cornell gets another good look but misses and trips trying to back up the shot and loses possession.

Syracuse TO, a little over 2 minutes left.

I don't think he tripped. He half-assed it.

The ball took a weird bounce and he lost track of the angle OOB. But I do think he half-assed it a little, thinking he had position.

1:52 left, Cornell TO.

Cornell can't keep possession after a very confusing sequence in front of the SU goal. SU running clock, takes a TO with :52 left.

Nope. English gets a run at the net, looks to have a clean look and I think he missed the cage. Then Syracuse showed how to waste the last 20 seconds of a game with a one goal lead by throwing the ball across midfield as the clock ran out. Pretty painful to watch that...

A tough loss, I thought if Cornell won >50% at the faceoff they would win

Three concerns... first being that Cornell hasnt shown the killer instinct to put away quality teams. Up 9-6 I felt they had a chance to push the lead and they didnt get it done. AJ had at best an average game, he again struggled with shots from 25-30feet out (I think he has really improved in assisting with the clear though compared with earlier in the season)

But the final issue is how can you have such uneven and poor officiating for a huge midweek, televised game ?!?
Through red lenses I thought Cornell got screwed more, but there was plenty of opportunity for Desko to yell at the refs as well, and it was in every part of the game
Stck holding at the faceoff, at least 1, I think 2 times the SU goalie stepped out of bounds with no call, uneven calls on pushes for both teams
(Cornell probably got lucky in the last minute on the no call, other than the Cornell player getting his helmet in front of him there wasnt anything there that didnt scream push in the back)

Princeton game now has increased importance. Lots of work to do, more consistency at faceoff and goal being crucial to the postseason.

Good thoughts, especiallty about Cornell lacking the killer instinct when up. Sounds better than saying games have runs and momentum shifts. But it did feel like we lost opportunities, such as for 2 scores not 1 going into the half.

Connor English put in nine goals in the NYS championship game at Manhasset and we'll remember him here for ringing a shot off the crossbar with his toes on the crease and defenders beaten, with 10 seconds to play, down by a goal. But the attack we missed was Steve Mock who was about 5 goals short of his typical 5 goal pace. That's worrisome if other teams can learn from how Syracuse played.

Fiore looked good enough in the second half.

I liked that Desko said, during the time out at the end, that it was okay to put the ball in the empty net when Cornell red-dogged. We've tried to play keep-away when we were up and more often than not we could not control the ball in the opponent's end.

So, 2 losses by 1 goal each. Should not have happened vs. Bucknell. This was a not unreasonable outcome. So now only one team left with one loss. Let's see how far a 10-2 team falls in the polls ... and RPI? Could Cornell win out: Brown, Princeton, the Ivy tournament, and get sent on the road in the first round?

Ugarte said he could see us win the NCAAs or fizzle out in the first round. He's right.

Amen.
And, I live in all the residents genuflect for SU country.
I'll be taking Shiites over this one for the rest of the season.
The comeback, "Hey, at least our kids have high school diplomas" is getting old.
This wasn't as bad as the OT loss in the finals, but it smarts none the less.

On a lighter note.....anybody else think that sometimes Rob plays like it's the Rob Pannell show?
I mean, I know he can make those incredible, low % shots. But, do they all have to be of that variety?
Just a thought.

And, how did SU shut Mock down so easily? Will other teams try the same strategy??
If they do it could be Bucknell all over again.

Breathing room: Dartmouth upsets Princeton, 10-9, Saturday 4/13. We had to beat Princeton in two weeks to guarantee hosting the Ivy tournament. Now we have to win either Brown or Princeton. Now everybody else has 2+ losses; Cornell is 4-0. Harvard beat Penn 8-7 in OT.

#15 Hopkins upsets #1 Maryland 7-4 Saturday. Let's see, if #2 loses to #7 13-12 and #1`loses to #15 7-4 ... who should fall further in the rankings?
#3 Carolina with 3 losses should move up to #1 if it gets past Hofstra Saturday night. Or #4 Denver.

Syracuse finally catches up and beats 2-11 Rutgers Saturday by a goal, at home, 12-11. Were down by 5.
