Post by: Al DeFlorio on October 08, 2012, 04:00:51 PM
Can't recall if this has been posted here before but the Cornell wrestlers will take on Missouri and Oklahoma State in Madison Square Garden on December 16:  Missouri at 10:30am; Oklahoma State at 12:30pm.

Hey Al,

You seem to be the resident "wrestling guy" so I was hoping you could clear something up for me.  I looked at the roster for this coming season and I don't see any of the exceptional recruiting class tha we brought in last year (Grey, Cisneros, etc).  I saw a blog from Cisneros saying he is grayshirting.  Is that the case for the entire class?  If so, is it common?  It seems like a genius way to get around the Ivy League's no redshirt policy.  Also, is that the reason that the 2013 recruiting class is so small (just on commit thus far)?

Can't really speak definitively to all you've asked but it looks like many in the class will be working with the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club and perhaps taking courses at Tompkins County Community College.  Nahshon Garrett is, I believe, a true frosh and he is listed on the roster at 125, where he will compete with Bricker Dixon for mat time.  There may be others but I'm just not sure.

The big news in wrestling this past week was the match between Cornell's 157 pound NCAA champ Kyle Dake and Penn State's 165 pound NCAA champ, David Taylor, at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star event in Washington, DC, this past Saturday night. Results are posted at cornellbigred.com and Fox College Sports will broadcast the event delayed on Friday, November 16, at 11pm.

Might be helpful to follow the Cornell forum at Wrestling Report.  Folks there are closer to the program than I am.

Aaaaaaand Craig Eifert goes down with - by the look on his face - a bad knee injury. He was losing to Shanaman at the time but it is still horrible to see; those guys were going to fight for mat time all year.
