Title: Weekend Playoff Predictions
Post by: Lenny 01 on March 06, 2003, 12:37:11 PM
Ok Here's my shot at it:
Brown beats a very poor Princeton in 2

Union beats RPI in 3 (Union playing very well, but RPI will be close to home and has done well against Union this year.)

Vermont takes Clarkson in 3 (an upset due to Vermont's good power play and they have played Clarkson well this year)

Colgate beats SLU in 3 (including at least one tied game.  this one will be close, but Colgate is playine well right now.)

RESULT:  Cornell takes on Vermont next weekend

Let's see how I do....

On USCHO, I believe I predicted Brown, Clarkson, and Union to win as expected via seedings (Union-RPI goes to three games), and SLU(t) to upset Colgate in three games.  I want to keep believing that the North Country is capable of doing some real damage in the playoffs.

Your Colgate prediction can't be completely correct. There are no ties in the playoffs.

My predictions:
Brown in 2
Union in 3
Clarkson in 2
Colgate in 3

Unless they have changed the rules, you can have a tie in the best of three series.  It's really a "three point series" (opposed to a "two-of-three") so if a team wins on Friday night, they can win the series with a tie on Saturday.

I thought they did change the rules about the tie thing.  At least, that's what I heard.  I have no official documentation handy to support that.

They did change the rules three years ago.  Recall that in game 1 of the 00/01 first round series versus Princeton, the GWG was scored at 7:25 of overtime.  There were also two double-overtime games in last years' first-round series (Dartmouth/Colgate game 1; Harvard/Brown game 2).

My bad.  I would have thought though that the ECAC site would have published some guidelines other than "best of 3".  The OTs are 20 minutes which does differ from the regular season and might be of interest to the casual fan.  Thanks for clearing it up.

Well if there aren't ties, then I just predict close games.
But, I did think they were 3 point serieses.
Maybe it's called a tie after 2 OTs?

No.  There are no ties.  It's unlimited OTs.  I couldn't find the mention of the change on USCHO.com, and the ECAC website has had so many rebirths that anything before this year is probably lost.  But I did find this:
[Q]League Changes Playoff Format
August 9, 1999
The ECAC announced last week a change in the format of the post season championship tournament, beginning with the upcoming season.
The conference first round playoffs will include a best-of-three series where a team will need to win two games outright in order to advance to Lake Placid. Any game tied after regulation will continue with 20:00 overtime periods until there is a victor.

In the past the ECAC has utilized a three-point series where a school could win and tie to advance to Lake Placid. The ECAC had used a first-to-three-point system since 1993. [/Q]

Where you went wrong: you expected something from the ECAC...

They do have an excellent list of rules regarding recruiting and what constitutes an inappropriate gift to a player by boosters.  For example, don't cosign LeNeveu's mortgage.

Got psyched to watch BU/Providence last night.

It snowed a little, so no hockey.

Got psyched to watch something good ECAC-wise tonight.

Went to NESN's Web site, realized they're showing RPI-Union, so no hockey.

Let's go UMass!!!!

Interesting.  The Cape Cod Times says NESN is showing BU-Providence tonight.  Never a dull moment. ::help::
