Title: W. Barlow Ware '47
Post by: Beeeej on December 22, 2011, 11:05:16 AM
W. Barlow Ware, Cornell Class of 1947, served as the P.A. announcer at Lynah for Cornell men's hockey games virtually from the day it opened in the 1950s until the mid-1980s.  He also announced Cornell football games for many years.  He was a fixture in the Alumni Affairs & Development division from 1955 until he fully retired in 2007.  He was also on the advisory boards for the Cornell Plantations, the Glee Club, and the Quill & Dagger senior honor society, and at various times acted as secretary, correspondent, vice president, and campaign committee member for the Class of 1947.  He was the recipient of the Frank H. T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Award, and an inductee of the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame.  I was lucky to count Barlow as a mentor and a friend, and the Cornell hockey program would not have been the same without him.  He was one of the last true gentlemen.

Barlow passed away earlier this week at the age of 86.

We certainly have had good announcers, both at Lynah and on the radio. Classy, unlike some rinks and broadcast. Sorry to hear it.

He will be missed.
Cornell Chronicle (http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Dec11/ObitWare.html) reprints a 2004 article.

The attached photo (taken by Tim McKinney) captures, as I understand it, the entire history of public address announcing at Cornell football games. Elmer "Flip" Phillips '32 (http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/theithacajournal/obituary.aspx?n=elmer-s-phillips-flip&pid=87922120) is on the left, Barlow Ware '47 in the middle, and the current guy, whose name escapes me at the moment, is on the right.

Nothing says "we're classy" like saying "other people aren't classy."

Take it as you'd like, but I never said I was classy, rather that our announcers were/are. So I stand by my statement.

A virtual holiday toast to you all, Art.
