Title: Cornell 31 Wagner 7 football
Post by: billhoward on October 03, 2011, 03:02:57 PM
This year, Cornell 31, Wagner 7. Last year, Wagner 41, Cornell 7. How long has it been since Cornell managed an 8-touchdown turnabout in score differential (58 points) against an opponent in a year? This has to be minor good news. Now to improve on our 1-9 record of the past 10 years vs. Harvard.

They're enjoyable to watch, too.  It used to be 85% predictable what play they would call in a given situation -- now it's close to impossible.

Under the previous coach, the QB looked to the sideline for the play to be called in, and just a few seconds before the snap. No matter that it was how the offense was run, it seemed to make the QB look out of options as the clock ran down and made Cornell look as if it was always changing plays because the defense was on to the initial play. It *looked* that way. We still might get blown out by Harvard this Saturday. But it really does feel as if the football team is finally trending up toward decency.

The Big Red, under Austin and staff, will ALWAYS be prepared.....and they have players who care, who understand commitment, and can see the progress....

It's well established that Cornellians expect and demand a certain level of boring play from their teams. I'm not sure this unpredictability you describe matches the mold.

Bill- I think the QB's first look at the sideline set the formation and and a two-play option.  After the defense set up, the second look designated which play to run based on the defensive setup.  To keep the defense honest, the offense would occasionally run a quick play after only  the first look.  A lot of BCS level teams are running that offense.  I liked it a lot.
