Title: Lenny for Player of the Week?
Post by: CU at Stanford on February 22, 2003, 11:25:34 PM
With the history-making 6th shut-out in a single season in a Cornell uniform (tying the great Ken Dryden's record), and two wins over the weekend, and an unbeaten season at home (13-0), LeNevue surely deserves the honor of Player of the Week, if not Goalie of the Year.  Agree?

Isn't that 6th shutout?

Yup, I meant to say "history-making, tying Ken Dryden's record..." or something like that.  :-D  Will edit my original post, of course.

I suspect he will be ECAC goalie of the week, unless somebody had some immense number of saves someplace.

AFAIK, only USCHO has a D-1 goalie of the week.  He should win that as well, since they have a sense of history there.

Does USCHO have a goalie of the week award? I thought it was just Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week (right?)

And if they don't have a D-1 Goalie of the Week Award, they should!!

And as far as ECAC goalie of the week:

Kevin Ackley for St. Lawrence had 48 saves in 2 wins (but 8 GA)

Steve Silverthorn for Colgate had 41 saves in 2 wins (4 GA)

Dov Grumet-Morris had 61 saves in 2 wins (3 GA)

And of course, LeNeveu had 29 saves in 2 wins (1 GA)

That makes it between Grumet-Morris and LeNeveu...and Lenny will probably win just because of the history factor.

Note: LeNeveu and Grumet-Morris are now #1 and #2 in the country in save percentage (.938 and .929, respectively). Mike Ayers (UHN) is 3rd.

Perhaps more important than total saves is a look at respective save percentages for the weekend:

Dov: 0.953

Dave: 0.967

Also, only ONE of those two tied his school's shutout record this weekend. LeNeveu will win the award :-)

How about their head to head numbers?

Dave LeNeveu 60:00 24x26 W (2 GA)
Dave LeNeveu 60:00 30x33 W (3 GA)

Grumet-Morris 60:00 19x24 L (5 GA)
Grumet-Morris 59:09 27x31 L (4 GA)

Totals:

Dave LeNeveu 2-0-0, 2.50, .915
Grumet-Morris 0-2-0, 4.58, .836

Irrelevant you say?

Well, yeah... but fun to recall!  :)

Dave deserves it.  Also, looking through all the "Players of the Week" for all of D-1, we've only had one the whole season: Moulson 2 weeks ago.  I find it kind of odd that no player from the nation's best defense, with by far the best goaltender, has won defensive player of the week.
Title: Defensive POTW
Post by: KeithK on February 23, 2003, 11:47:29 PM
Well, USCHO's Defensive POTW is basically Goalie of the Week.  As amazing as Lenny has been all season, he generally hasn't had the eye popping numbers that it usually takes to win awards.  By which I mean save numbers.  Yes, he has shutouts, but the shot totals are usually way down because of how good the team's defense.

I haven't paid attention to this lately, but it's telling that through the first half of the season I don't think Lenny had even got a Star of the Game.  The defense is just too good for him to get a lot of weekly accolades (though I'll be very surprised if he doesn't get the Dryden award).

...while Princeton has the worst defense in the country (#60 out of 60 teams) and even they had a Best Defensive Player of the Week.

Where can you find out who the stars of a game are?

Nowhere really.  I'm just going from radio broadcasts and people's comments.

And indeed, LeNeveu was named the ECAC Goaltender of the Week.
