Title: Softball Beats Harvard for Ivy Championship
Post by: dag14 on May 08, 2010, 03:10:49 PM
The softball team split Friday's doubleheader with Harvard and won game 3 this afternoon 3-2 to win the Ivy League and earn the AQ for post-season play.  Venue and opponent will be announced Sunday, May 16 late.  Congratulations to yet another Cornell team which has posted a tremendous season!

Cornell is heading out to #4* Arizona for the Regional (http://cornellbigred.com/news/2010/5/18/SB_0518102300.aspx). Joining them will be #16 Oklahoma State and Hofstra. Cornell has never played any of these teams before, which surprises me.

*Cornell Athletics says that Arizona is #10, but that is a mistake; ASU is #10 (http://www.ncaa.com/sports/w-softbl/division_i2.html).

They're going by the NCAA seeding, where Arizona is #10: http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/2010/ncaa_bracket_DI_softball.html

How unfortunate (for me) that ASU happened to be #10 in the polls.

But Arizona State is coming to the northeast while two northeast teams are going to Arizona.  In a sport, where they try to keep NCAA travel to a minimum as in many of the other brackets, this seems like unneccessary travel especially since Cornell was kept close to home last year.

Oklahoma State 7, Cornell 0. Ouch.

That said, congratulations to the women of the Big Red for another Ivy League title and a great season overall.
