Mar. 21 Women's Frozen Four Final is on CBS College Sports Channel at 1PM:-)
This is not a game thread, but I wanted to move discussion of the women to this recently changed Forum. Thanks Age.
thanks, jim, after searching uscho I could not find the station carrying the game.
big weekend for cornell ;)
let's go red!
Hopefully someone will update a game thread for those of us travelling??? (Please?)
0-0 8:15 left in first. End to end hockey. CU can skate with UMD.
Is this on the intertubes anywhere?
http://all-access.cbssports.com/player.html?code=ncaa&media=174189
Cornell seems to be dominating time of posession and pressure on offense, but I think UMD has actually had the better scoring chances so far. We just haven't been able to generate good shots off of the cycle.
0-0 end of the 1st. Cornell playing well dominating time of possession.
2nd Period just beginning! LGR
Quote from: judyHopefully someone will update a game thread for those of us travelling??? (Please?)
There's also a Chat going, if you can get into that while traveling.
0-0 middle of the 2nd Period.
CU 0:35 of 5-on-3.
1-0 Cornell
Rougeau scored it, converting on the PP after the 5x3 expired.
Cornell 1-0 end of 2nd. On pk for about a minute in beginning of 3rd.
1-1 - Blais scores on PP
Go BIG RED!
Still 1-1 9 minutes left
What's with the PP??!!
UMD Scores on PP 2-1 with about 4 min left
2-2 Tie
she shoot she scores!!
This sucks - got to keep switching between women's hockey and men's hoops. Harvard isn't having this problem today. They're so lucky.
Another PP to UMD.
Win or Lose, Tompkins Girls Hockey Association is starting to plan to rally at the airport; charter plane arriving about 9:45 p.m. EDT!
Mary Grainger
End of 3rd 2-2 Going to OT
WOW! They are awesome!
Hey while we're waiting for OT, come check out the new fansite (http://grou.ps/cornellwomenshockey/home/) we recently made! www.grou.ps/cornellwomenshockey/home
It's a bit late in the season to get it started, but we'll be ready for next year. Love to see you all there to cheer for the Big Red Women!
OT on
PP CORNELL!
And there's the make-up call. 4 on 4.
Still 2-2 9 minutes left in OT
First OT over 2-2
Going to a second OT.
2nd OT on
11:48 left in 2nd OT. Now the longest women's championship hockey game ever.
2nd OT over Still 2-2
3rd OT about to start
This is crazy! THey must be so tired! Why not just have two winners?!
11 minutes left in 3rd OT
UMD wins on deflection. Great year for CU
All in all, still the greatest weekend in Cornell sports in a long time. Congrats to the women's team on an amazing run.
Congratulation's to the Big Red women on a great season. With the addition of talent coming in and coming back they could very well be right back there again next season
Great game by a well coached pair of teams. Congratulations to both teams. What a run for Cornell.
Women have a very tough team. That was a great game. Cornell fans of late are going to all get ulcers if too many more games go to OT.
Inspiring run. A little heartbroken, but so incredibly proud of this team. Congratulations, and thank you, ladies.
Tough loss to take after getting this close. Was an excellent game, but Cornell started looking visibly tired in the 2nd OT, so I can't say the outcome is unsurprising. Still, they return nearly all their strengths, and hopefully get Rebecca Johnston back, so they should be at least as good next year.
Heartbreaking end to an amazing run. This was arguably the greatest Cornell women's hockey team of all time.
I'm hoping for an even better team next season. I don't think that's being too greedy, do you?
Since their arrival home is late for their little sisters with TGHA, how about some adult fans also join the rally at the airport tonight?!
No update yet on their flight plan so assume 9:45 p.m. unless updated here, or contact mmgithaca@aol.com.
BTW, Tom, do you know if Johnston gets a redshirt for this year's absence, or did she lose a year of eligibility?

Was she even enrolled at Cornell this year? Not knowing what i'm talking about, I don't know how she could lose a year of eligibility if she wasn't enrolled in school.
They are still the best team in the country in my book! Awesome work by an amazing team! We very much enjoyed following them this year.
We'd love to see all your support at our new fansite (http://cuwomenhockeyfans.ning.com/). GO Big Red!

The Ivies have some very strict rules regarding eligibility: I think in general the clock starts ticking on your first day of play (or enrollment?) with few exceptions. Vinnie Auger was one of those few exceptions, IIRC.

I believe the Ivy does 4 years of eligibility to be used within 5 calendar years, but the student must have a valid academic reason for remaining at the school. The most common Ivy red-shirts are medical, but I believe you can get one for a non-medical leave of absence as well provided you will be short of the requirements for graduation. I think student-athletes can also petition to extend the calendar year clock.
I have no idea what Johnston's status is for this year, but I can't imagine she'd actually be enrolled as a student, so in all likelihood she will retain her full eligibility.
Edit - as an example, Jennifer Botteril was a Junior for Harvard in 2000-2001, took the 2001-2002 season off to play for team Canada in the Olympics, and returned for her senior season in 2002-2003. Julie Chu played four years with a one year leave of absence for the Olympics in 2005-2006, and I believe Angela Ruggiero actually took 2 years off from school and used all four years of eligibility.

This is the NCAA rule, though the Ivy league doesn't allow students to retain athletic eligibility if they are using their 5th year for grad school. Cornell had a wrestler (whose name is escaping me, Tyler Baier maybe?) who used his final year of sports eligibility by transferring to UNC-Greensboro for a masters.
As for whether Rebecca Johnston's return will help the women, I am sure that they will be better - but I wonder if they will be better relative to the field. UMD made the finals without a bunch of players on both the Canadian and Finnish teams.
A hell of an accomplishment to get this far. Congratulations to the Big Red.
Congratulations to the Womens Hockey team. The 2 best teams in college hockey met and played their hearts out. Looking forward to next year!!!

That's always the big question. Cornell's 1997-98 team finished 5th in the ECAC (effectively top 8 in the nation) but they were way behind Dartmouth, Harvard, Minnesota and UMD, among others, when the olympians came back.
Cornell's got some serious talent coming in next year, with Johnston and some big-time freshmen, but I don't know if they'll have enough for a title. Still, I stand by my prediction from earlier this season - next year is likely Cornell's best shot at a Frozen Four. I'm thrilled that they got there a year early. :)

Is this situation any different from Troy Davenport's was with the men's team?

I disagree, the best - no arguments allowed.

But the main reason they lost was a lack of bodies, so more of them should help a lot. Considering how far we went with what we had, I'm very optimistic.
Did anyone else think it wasn't cool having the trophy come out with no shaking of hands, or did I miss something?
They did shake hands afterwards, as the camera started to go away. Usually, yeah, you shake before the trophy comes out... not sure where it came from exactly.
As expected, the hockey team departure from Minnesota was delayed due to OT!
Plus the charter terminal is not set up for gatherings of people especially at night!
They will travel by bus to Lynah to unload gear, etc.
New plan:
Meet in Lynah parking lot 10:30 p.m.-ish
Welcome/Congrats signs encouraged but not required
Red clothes always good
Smiles mandatory
Mary 280-4380

I'm sure they did it so the broadcast could get their shots of the trophy-kissing and sign off, since their other programming was affected by the length.
I saw the 1st four periods of this game, caught the 5th on live blog, and had to be somewhere else for the 6th period. WOW! I was so impressed with how our women played. There were stretches where they were playing in UMD's end. The shot blocking in our defensive end was incredible as well.
And to come back in the 3rd and tie the game up with less than 4 minutes was amazing.
However, I felt the longer the OTs went, the tougher it would be for us. Unfortunately, we (once again) came out on the wrong end of a 3OT game. I did hear that the penalty that led to the GWG was "good penalty" and not a cheesy questionable call. UMD's PP had been very effective all game.
Congrats to the Women and a fantastic season. I can't wait until next year.

One would have thought their coach +/or captains would have known better. For all the crap we take for inconsiderate cheers at game's end, that was a true snub.

The penalty was a good call, and also a penalty that pretty much had to be taken to stop the one on none. The game winning goal was scored a few seconds after the penalty expired, and the woman coming out of the box missed preventing (or hindering) the shot by fractions of a second.

Mary,
Thanks for doing this. It must have been so great for the team to be met by adoring fans after the long trip home.
I would love to hear a report.
Rumors have Marie Philip Poulin looking at Cornell, Wisconsin, St. Lawrence, Boston U. and a 5th unnamed school. If Cornell is able to land her, they will be EXTREMELY (as opposed to just extremely) good next year.

I'm just glad she isn't looking at Hahvahd. Agreed though, if we do land her, the Big Red will be Team Canada-South.

So the Cornell Sun (http://cornellsun.com/section/sports/content/2010/03/31/womens-hockey-finishes-historical-season-national-runner) finally decides to write about the amazing season our women's team had. This article appears on the back cover today.
Once more, good job girls! :-D
And they got to share the back page with a long guest column about...the seniors on the men's basketball team.

Really?
I bet Cathrine White, Laura Fortino, and Lauriane Rougeau would gladly trade their ECAC and NCAA individual recognition for a national championship trophy.
