Title: "Touchdown" the Big Red Bear
Post by: Swampy on March 19, 2010, 04:53:41 PM
I just got an email  from the Alumni Association about using Facebook to keep up to date on the Basketball team's activities through the weekend. At the bottom of the message was a picture of "Touchdown, the Big Red Bear."

Is this a deliberate attempt at irony? Given our sports history, shouldn't the mascot's name e something like "Goal," "Three pointer," "Takedown,' "Chukkah" (might do double-duty with polo and BBall), "Middie," "Stroke," or "Clutch and Grab." But "Touchdown"?

Is this the misguided idea of some PR spin-doctor, or is it just wishful thinking?::doh::

I believe that's the name of the original live bear mascot from however many decades ago--it's not like it was named in the 2000s.

Back in the days of our national championships in 1915, 1921, and 1923.

There's a book all about Touchdown written by a friend, John Foote.
