Title: North Dakota Pregame 1/23
Post by: Jim Hyla on January 23, 2010, 04:57:17 PM
A couple of recent articles in the IJ about their problem with the Sioux nickname. Cornell Foe Has Nickname Problem (http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20101200346) and Decision on Nickname delayed (http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20101210391). And another article about Scrivens mask from The Post Standard (http://blog.syracuse.com/sports/2010/01/cornell_hockeys_ben_scrivens_w.html). Here's hoping we play better tonight.

Score updates would be most welcome; daughter is playing the flute, which believe it or not takes precedence over listening to the game.

1-0 NoDak (Malone) after 1

1-0 Sioux after 1.  They scored 5x5 about 1:33 into the game, and it's been tilted in their favor the whole period.  We had 2 PPs, but never really got anything going.  Sioux's aggressive kill gave us fits.

Sioux finishes the period on PP, about 1:30 of PP time left to start the 2nd.

And back to the PP we go.  Toews's second penalty in a row.

Um.  Never mind.  Gallagher takes a dumb interference to negate the PP right away.  4x4.

back to full strength momentarily, then we can't count.  PP Sioux.

Something in the water.  Sioux can't count to negate the PP.  We'll get about 1 min PP after the 4x4 expires.

UND takes a penalty with 7 sec left in 2nd period, period expires.  Still 1-0 after 2.

Our PP is absolutely awful...  And UND is the fourth most penalized team in the nation...

UND really presses "hahd" on the kill, according to interview with Devin.  ;)

It looks putrid.  NoDak is doing a great job of extending the box and pressuring the puck holder.  Our guys have no time.

short-handed coming up again.  This has been the only time we have looked good.

And an absolutely horrible giveaway in our zone leads to UND's 2nd goal.  Ugh.  D'agostino brought it out way too casually from behind our net and the Sioux player just picked him clean from behind.

Was it a "clean" pick?  I didn't see it, but Greening immediately rushed to the referee after the goal and then Schafer argued for a while.

No. A blatant cross-check/hit from behind (pick one, they both would have been correct calls). Kotra stood there, watched, and froze while ND committed that penalty to steal a scoring chance. Mind boggling that it was not called. And to have Cornell get called for a penalty minutes earlier for an inconsequential hook on ND's breakout that did nothing to slow up ND just makes the non-call more of a stomach punch. After that Kotra was a deer in the headlights and Feola had to finally call matching penalties as Kotra let a couple high hits by both teams (Cornell frustrated; ND retaliating) go uncalled right in front of him. I don't think I ever come onto here and complained about the officials --their not machines and things will get missed from time to time-- but that non-call, by ECAC refs in favor of the visiting team no less, was about the most infuriated I've felt about an officiating moment ever.

I totally agree, as posted on the postgame thread.

Nice article on Scrivens' helmet.  It would be cool  the University "traded" him a new one when he graduates so this one could go in the Hall of Fame Room at Schoellkopf.
