Christmas comes early this year
Who would hire him?
Quote from: ebilmesWho would hire him?
I'm sure he'd make a fine position coach somewhere.
"Assume the position"?
Won't be easy for his successor to dig the program out of this hole. What little offense this team had (Ganter, Liuzza, Walters, Barbour) is graduating. Returning QBs threw 32 passes of which five were intercepted. Returning receivers had two receptions for TDs. Returning running backs had one TD rushing.
Rumor has it that Knowles has taken a defensive coordinator job at Duke. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/313647-princeton-names-new-coach
Princeton just hired their new coach, an alumni and assistant offensive line coach for Bengals.

Would have been nice to see an alum return Cornell to glory. It didn't work out. Now we've got a fresh start.

I think we have our answer: Knowles LIKES being at the bottom of the conference.
The Sun (http://cornellsun.com/node/40154) followed up on rumors posted at FootballCoachScoop.com (http://www.footballcoachscoop.com/Scoop.html) on 24 Dec 2009 of Andy Noel's candidates to replace Knowles. There are a couple of alumni in the group.
Today (2 Jan 2010) FootballCoachScoop reports that Joe Moglia, a name not on their earlier list, has interviewed for the job.
Quote from: FootbalCoachScoop.comJoe Moglia is the former Chairman and former CEO of TD Ameritrade, the largest online discount brokerage firm in the world in terms of the number of retail online equity trades placed each day. Since stepping down as CEO, Moglia has worked as an unpaid voluntary assistant coach/mentor for the University of Nebraska football team. Moglia has stated that he would like to return to coaching and hopes to coach a Division I football school next year. Moglia was a football coach for 16 years, finishing as the defensive coordinator at Dartmouth College from 1981-1983.

Can we please choose an "offensive-minded" candidate? I am sick of watching Cornell's inept, two-first-downs-a-game offense.

Maybe if Mogolia comes, he will pay out of his own pocket to increase staff salaries to recruit better position coaches.

Most of the names mentioned are offensive-minded. The first batch was
Joel Lamb - Harvard offensive coordinator :-)
Tom Gilmore - Holy Cross head coach, formerly defensive coordinator at Lehigh :-/
Mickey Fein - Lafayette offensive coordinator :-)
Ron Prince - Virginia special teams coordinator, former Kansas State head coach, and former Cornell running coordinator:-)::uhoh::
Ricky Rahne '02 - Kansas State tight ends coach and former Cornell player and :-)

FootballCoachScoop has now added another
Brain White - Florida tight ends coach :-)
The smilies only indicate apparent offensive vs. defense coaching experience, and thus, presumably, orientation, except with Prince, who looks like a can of worms.
Spoke with a teammate of Ed Marinaro tonight. He was at the Ivy football dinner and CFA reception. Pres. Skorton spoke, this was before the resignation, and said athletic teams are in good shape, except football. He said that was going to change. We surmised Knowles was told to find another job and he won't be fired.
Nice to hear that Skorton gives a damn about athletics. Hopefully they will be able to keep Donahue around.
Ricky Rahne? Seriously? Makes me feel really old...
Maybe we will sing "Cornell Victorious" again. With cause.
Could sell the little-used "victory bell" to the Bryant basketball program.
The name of Tom Gilmore, the HC head coach, has been in play around the Ivies. Cornell also should be looking at Colgate coach Dick Biddle, 121-53 since being named head coach in 1995. He was 9-2 this year. He's 61 and Hamilton-to-Ithaca might be too much of a lateral move as opposed to the Ivy schools that keep pushing football every year: Harvard, Yale, Princeton (which finally went with an alum as its hire), Penn. Maybe Cornell can offer more money and improve an older coach's retirement prospects.
Penn basketball might like that victory bell too, although maybe they would actually be able to ring it this week with games against Lafayette and UMBC

The AARP says that Cornell is the best place for someone over 50 to work. (http://www.aarp.org/money/work/best_employers/best_employers_list_2009/)

I believe I read somewhere (sorry, can't provide a link) that Biddle just signed a contract extension at Colgate.

Not exactly on topic, but here's a link to Ed Marinaro's speach at the IVY Football Dinner. It's quite funny. (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8970365086043311392#)

... after Biddle got nibbles from other schools. A 3-year-extension gets him to retirement age and he could certainly keep coaching after that, but not many other schools would want to start a rebuilding program knowing the coach won't be around to see more than a couple of his recruiting classes graduate.

If this is the batch, I'd take Gilmore in a second. Head Coaching experience and he knows how the Ivies work. He's been successful at Holy Cross and that should count for something. Maybe bring Lazor back as OC.
Please not Brian White...

Agree. And Holy Cross has a similar academic and financial situation to deal with.
Why would a current head coach from Colgate or Holy Cross want to take the job at Cornell? With the academic requirements and no post season play, I'm not sure why they would leave their current positions.
This job is more appealing for a current coordinator from a 1AA school or D2/D3 head coach looking for a step up.
Bill Sheridan, now former NY Giant defensive coordinator, (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4795970) is in need of a job. Not the offensive minded coach that some people want, though he had no trouble making the G-men Defense quite offensive!::yark::.

With all the talk of lateral moves for other coaches, this might be a good example of a step up, going from the Giants defense to Cornell.

Ron Turner, now former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator, (http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/01/ron-turner-i-did-the-best-job-i-could-with-what-i-had.html) is also in need of a job. He has college head coaching experience at University of Illinois to boot.
