Title: Alumni in the Pros - Where are They
Post by: Jim Hyla on October 19, 2009, 07:54:07 PM
So, I've wanted to do this for a while. Once you get my age you can't remember where everyone is playing/coaching. So, if you guys get me the info, I'll post where our alumni are working. I'll consider any gainful employment in the hockey field, playing, coaching, or anything else. Here or overseas.

NHL
Bettman, Gary - NHL Commissioner [I didn't know whether to include him, not a hockey alum]
Bitz, Byron - Boston Bruins
McCutcheon, Brian - Buffalo Sabres  Asst. Coach
Moulson, Matt - NY Islanders
Murray, Douglas - San Jose Sharks
Nieuwendyk, Joe - Dallas Stars GM
O'Byrne, Ryan - Montreal Canadiens
Vesce, Ryan - San Jose Sharks - 11/13 Worcester (AHL), 11/21 San Jose

AHL
Gleed, John- Bridgeport Sound Tigers
McCutcheon, Mark - Portland Pirates
Romano, Tony – Bridgeport
Sawada, Raymond - Texas Stars

IHL
Drouin, PC - Fort Wayne Komets

ECHL
Barlow, Evan - Idaho Steelheads
Brush, Craig - President - Florida Everblades
Krantz, Doug - Cincinnati Cyclones
Pokuluk, Sasha - Bakersfield Condors

CHL
McKeown, Matt - Laredo Bucks
McLeod, Kevin - Texas Brahmas
Scott, Topher - Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees

Europe
Abbott, Cam - Lulea HF (Sweden)
Abbott, Chris - Lulea HF (Sweden)
Cook, Charlie - Rauma (Finland)
Iggulden, Mike - Riga Dynamo (KHL)
Knoepfli, Mike - Fribourg-Gotteron (Switzerland)
Leneveu, David - Salzburg EC (Austria)
Nethery, Lance - GM of the DEG Metro Stars in Dusseldorf
Pegoraro, Dan - Frisk Asker (Norway)
Pelletier, Jean-Marc - Hamburg Freezers (DEL)
Ratushny, Dan - Coach EHC Olten (Switzerland)

NCAA
Derraugh, Doug - Head Coach (Cornell - Women's)
Jones, Casey - Associate Head Coach (Cornell)
Schafer, Mike - Head Coach (Cornell)

I haven't decided what to do with guys going up and down. Do I just put where they are when they move, or track their movements?

Here's one I did a couple years ago. It'd be a good starting point for coaches and looking to see if any of the guys playing in europe are still playing:

http://elf.elynah.com/read.php?1,118040,118995#msg-118995

With a cursory glance, it looks like Dan Pegoraro is now playing for Frisk Asker in Norway. PC Drouin continues to play for the Fort Wayne Komets of the IHL. In the coaches column, Dan Ratushny signed a one year contract to coach EHC Olten in the Swiss National B League.

I suppose it's obvious, but Schafer and Jones are alumni coaching hockey. :-P  I know Hannah recently left Sacred Heart; any other alumni coaching in the NCAA ranks?

Tony Romano - Brideport

Does he count as an alumnus?  We have other guys on the list who didn't graduate so I would say he should be included.

Also Ryan Kindret - Kalamazoo Wings (IHL)

Ah, good ol' facetimer.

Scott Mayer '03 never played varsity hockey for Cornell.  He is/was the meteorologist for Elmira station WETM, as the youtube user/elf resident nyiballs pointed out in the video description.  Scott Mayer played club hockey at Cornell and has filled in for Jackals practices and other Elmira hockey events, but never got into a game AFAIK.  He also has done some color work for Jackal broadcasts.

And, if you believe Scott (which I don't), he "backed up David LeNeveu on the '03 team".   Yes, Scott actually told me that one day....   After that, believed his weather forecasts even less.....::demented::

Scott was 4th on the depth chart at goalie in the '03 season.  Though there were only 3 roster spots on the varsity team, I do believe he was given the opportunity to back up LeNeveu during the Red/White game.  I don't have the box score from that game (maybe Greg Berge can help me out with that), but if this is true, Scott's statement was accurate.

And, if we're going to accept that stretch, why don't we just include any underclassman (who can skate) with any remaining NCAA athletic eligibility?   After all, they ALL could play on the varsity if a shortage develops.

Saying Scott Mayer backed up LeNeveu is about like me proclaiming that I am a Viet Nam Vet because I served during the Viet Nam War (& did NOT go to southeast Asia).   I had a VA Rep actually tell me once that I am a Viet Nam Vet.   It's bullshit and an insult to those who bravely trudged through those rice patties.....The same can be said for Scott Mayer's story!!

"I scored some goals in the first six games and Cornell scouted me for a couple of weeks," Moulson said. "One day, they called me and asked if I wanted to play for them and I said I'd get back to them. I called my father to tell him about it and he told me to call them back right away.

"They're the first team that offered me anything. I didn't know how prestigious the school was. I called them right back and said: 'I'm coming.' They said: 'We don't know if your marks will get you in or what your financial aid will be,' but I said: 'That's okay, I'm coming anyway.'

Sorry I left out that part of the conversation with the VA Rep, Al.  I said that I was a Vietnam-era veteran.   He immediately told me that I was a "Vietnam Vet".   It was & is bullshit.  And, if I did that, I would be like Scott Mayer.   Trying to falsely associate myself with _____.   I was never shot at and neither was Scott Mayer (as a varsity player @ Cornell).  Frankly, I have no respect for people who pull stunts like that.

This is Scott...

I have never, ever claimed to have been a varsity player at Cornell, nor would I ever do so.  I have waaaaaay to much respect for the program to ever pull any garbage like that.
I have always said that the extent of my varsity experience was the red/white game my senior year, and I was very grateful to Coach Schafer for giving me that opportunity to participate.  Incidentally, Lenny didn't even play that game...  Marr and Chabot played.
I am also very proud of my time as one of the pioneers of Cornell's ACHA program (which as I see are still unbeaten this year).  My email address remains 'cornellclubhockey' to this day.
As far as my ECHL experiences... I have had the fortune of being an emergency backup for three teams in my life... but it's nothing more than being a warm body in practice and a safety net on the bench.  I'd love for someone to produce any program from any game that I did sit for, because they all clearly list my previous team as Cornell-ACHA.  I was actually quite adament that they included the ACHA as to make sure it was accurate and not misleading.
It's funny all the parallels in life, just like when I used to be a broadcaster for the weather... you say one thing, but people hear something completely different and when it doesn't add up, they make you out to be a villian.

Scott, your words were:  "I backed up David LeNeveu on the 03 team".   Maybe you had a weak moment or maybe you didn't intend it to come out that way.  But, that IS what you said.    I stand by that.  I have no personal agenda except that I hate to see things misrepresented or embellished.   I don't expect you to admit it.  But, I stand by it.  I was shocked when you said it because I knew it to be untrue.   BTW, to refresh your memory.  We had our discussion near the Lowe's checkout at the Big Flats store.   Your wife was there.  In fact she was quite proud that you are one of the biggest Cornell Hockey fans in the area.  For that, I applaud you.

Let's recap: you make an accusation that cannot be verified by anyone else, and which is denied by the target of the accusation.  He said, she said.

Title: Re: Wow... that's harsh
Post by: nyiballs on October 25, 2009, 12:31:41 AM
I have absolutely no problem dropping the issue...  I just felt the need to defend myself from some pretty nasty things that were being said, and I'd prefer to nip any rumors in the bud before they spread even further.

To Kyle...  I'm sorry that I do not even remember the discussion.  You have to forgive me, because when I was in Elmira, I would have conversations with dozens of people per day on a wide variety of topics and years later, it's all just mish-mashed together.

The only Lenny story I ever like to tell is of the morning skate before the Red/White game when he and I played rebound against each other and I won.  It's really a self-depracting thing since he was already a second round pick, and I like to put myself down by saying my greatest achievement in hockey was beating Lenny in a meaningless game at a meaningless practice before a different meaningless game.  Perhaps I mentioned that?

I get the feeling that we will not come to an agreement here, but I think things were becoming a bit malicious towards me, with implications that anywhere I go, I tout myself as an alum of the varsity team, when it simply is just not the case.

At this point, I'm ready to move past this whole issue.

Unfortunately (or fortunately... depending from what angle) I am no longer in the So. Quote from: ESPN News serviceThe Columbus Blue Jackets signed center Riley Nash to a three-year deal to replenish some of the depth they lost when Matt Calvert signed with Colorado.

Terms were not disclosed, but the deal is worth $8.25 million, according to multiple reports.

3 year deal, $2.75 million per according to Darren Dreger.

Is that $2.75M the AAV or the total?

AAV
this was uncharacteristically generous for eLynah. don't do it again.

Jacob MacDonald has signed with the Panthers on a two year, two way deal that'll pay him $750k/year in the NHL and $200-250k/year in the minors:

I had no idea MacDonald led his entire AHL team in scoring last year (20-35-55 in 75 GP)...good on him!

Makes me want to put on my Cam Abbott jersey. Thank you for the link and the trip down memory lane.  How I loved the Abbott twins.

my moderately hot take is that i do not believe that galajda was materially better than stewart, but also that i don't mean it as a knock on either of them.

i don't have the data to say stewart was better, but you don't have the data to say he was worse. he got wally pipped. no regrets, just saying.

It appears that Holden Anderson '17 will be playing for something called the Amiens Gothiques (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothiques_d%27Amiens) in France.

Here's the club's official announcement (http://francehockey.fr/2018/05/15/hockey-communique-officiel-les-gothiques-damiens-7/).

And for those of you not fluent in French, here's the Google Translate version:

Could it be the Gothic's weapon of death next year in power play? it is quite possible at the sight of the monstrous shoot that has this young American defender 24 years.

Holden Anderson has excellent mobility and supersonic throwing. Aligned against the best trios of the league during his 4 years in Cornell, he was able to improve his defensive game in the best university circuit in the United States.

Last season in Denmark, his first professional, he finished 5th scorer in the league among the defenders with 8 goals.
He handles the puck very well and has excellent game vision, which will help improve our transition game and increase the number of goals and points made by our defenders.

After watching hours of video of his game, we are proud to add this promising player to our lineup.
