Title: Replaying 1993 high school football
Post by: RichH on April 24, 2009, 06:11:59 PM
Seriously, why can't Americans accept a good ol' fashioned tie anymore?  (Cue the neckware jokes)  It's gone from college football, gone from the NHL.  What's wrong with ties?

Personally, I think they are fine (outside of playoffs, then play to the death). A tie says that on this given day, these two team were played to a level where there was no clear advantage on the scoreboard.

That can be due to two teams being evenly matched, a "better" team failing to execute etc.

However, it today's world there has to be a winner. Can we blame shows like Survivor, American Idol and America's Best Chef (not sure on the name, my mom was watching something like that over the holidays) for this blatant decline in American sports culture?

Maybe "there has to be a winner" is a cosmic counterweight to the "everyone is a winner" attitude that appears in youth athletics these days.  I'll take hokey tie breaking schemes over trophies for participation any day. But that's not saying much.

And get off my lawn!

I wonder if Harvard will ask Yale to replay Yale's victory-by-tie.

The story is dumb, not so much for the deepeter question about whether ties are good, but more that guys in their 30s who sould have done more by now still care about one football game from 15 years back.

Oh, don't over analyze it.  The guys had a reunion football game.  Sounds like a lot of fun even if the reason for holding it is a little silly.
