Title: ESPNU and cable--a glimmer of hope?
Post by: Al DeFlorio on April 13, 2009, 10:01:16 PM
A recent--and maybe even encouraging--piece in Sports Business Journal talking about ESPN looking to boost distribution of ESPNU to cable (and satellite) subscribers: http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/61982

ESPN Classic gives you Walt Frazier in muttonchop sideburns and golfers with blue poly sansabelt slacks. Enough, already.

If enough people call their cable company and gripe about ESPNU not being on mainstream cable - when DTV has it - they may get the message.

A lot of us don't even get ESPN Classic.  And that's a terrible thing to say about Tom Watson (particularly if true).

What makes you think it is the fault of the cable companies? ESPN is trying to shove a niche channel into the basic tier in the same way the NFL is trying to force the NFL network into the basic package.

It's time to forget the national nightmare that was male fashion of the 1970s (nothing wrong with the way Donna Summer or Mary Tyler Moore dressed):
- Guys with porn star mustaches
- NBA players with R-38 sideburns but still wearing Bill Bradley shorts
- Short pop singers with platform shoes (Tony Orlando, still shorter than Dawn)
- Hockey players dressed like they were extras in Slapshot (plaid slacks, tan leather jacket), with some of that fashion style spilling over to golf, where ESPN Classic recreates this time capsule of fashion foibles

(And MTM married a Cornellian, who is now immortalized in Adam Sandler's Chanukah Song II.)

QuoteBob Dylan was born a Jew
Then he wasn't
but now he's back,
Mary Tyler Moore's husband is Jewish
'Cause we're pretty good in the sack.
