Title: Bertagna column
Post by: rhovorka on January 29, 2003, 12:48:11 AM
A new column by Hockey East commissioner and former Harvard sieve, Joe Bertagna, entitled "On Traditions, Old and New" is on USCHO.com.  Many references to Cornell and the Lynah Faithful.  Quite a flattering light, too.  :-)

This guy knows how it's supposed to be done:

[q] students will still hold up copies of the Cornell Daily Sun during the recitation of the opposing team's starting lineup and then toss the crumpled paper on the ice as the Big Red get introduced [/q]

The key is as the Big Red get introduced .  But, just as it's impossible to trump sound with silence, you can't keep all of those papers from hitting the ice too soon.

He makes great points about thundersticks and the need for fresh, witty cheers. I remember listening to the W Mich games and being quite anoid with the thundersticks, I remember Adam Wodon being annoid, also.

And I remember when people could spell simple words like "annoyed."   ::help::

Wow, let it never be said that all Penn students are boorish, ignorant churls.  Wouldn't it be great if each section introduced itself to the opposing goalie with some proprietary litany of taunts like the Penn student?  I guess that all someone would have to do is get a few stalwarts together and pass out a cheer sheet...

If I were currently an undergraduate, I would see that article as a warning never to let Lynah degenerate into something blandly offensive like, say, Michigan.

And the funny thing is, the Western Michigan fans were actually pretty impressive the second night, without the thundersticks.

Also, to refute the "everyone hates Cornell" assertion, the Lawson rink staff were pretty friendly with us after the second game.

But, to their defense, they may not have had a chance to really get to know us yet.:-D
