"Good Evening, Hockey Fans!"
Same opening line: Greening / Gallagher / Jillson.
What did Schafer do? What did he say?
Schafer said a lot. (http://www.theithacajournal.com/article/20090314/BLOGS05/90314007)
Record in game 2, best-of-3 series, losing the first game: 0-3.
1994 ECAC QF Harvard (away)
1995 ECAC QF Clarkson (away)
2007 ECAC QF Quinnipiac (home)
Cornell beat Clarkson in game 2 of the 1988 QF in Ithaca but lost the mini-game that immediately followed.
X-Checking against RPI. Cornell to the PP.
Sounded like some good pressure getting the puck to net, but the PP comes up empty.
Slashing to Michael Kennedy at 4:10
PK successful.
Gallagher gets stoned on a chance after the RPI PP expired.
LGR!!
Cornell aggressive on the kill.

He stated his opinion professionally and showed every respect for RPI. Nothing he said seemed out of line. What exactly has to be said in order for the league to hand down a suspension?
At least the refs are calling something...
I'm only listening. These good calls?
At this rate, Schafer might bust into Lynah and charge onto the ice.
3 straight calls on Cornell. I guess the refs listened to Schafer's call for a tighter game. :-)
Who is riley nash playing with? i am following the game via the ithaca journal and elynah.

Basically any criticism of the refereeing in public is not acceptable in the eyes (and ears) of the league officials.

P. Kennedy
Barlow
They just had a few chances, but alas no goals.
4:01 left in first.
FYI... WRPI does have free audio.
Cornell PP.
Cornell back to the PP...
OK, 2nd PP coming up for the Red. I'm geting tired of hearing, "Save by York." Time for a change.
LGR!
5x3 for 1:05
5 x 3 PP for 1:07. Let's Go Red.
They NEED a goal here. NEED.

BARLOW!
1-0!
BARLOW!
YESS!!! BARLOW!!!
BARLOW!!!!!
YES!
Wow, we really needed that.
You asked, and they delivered.
Let's get another.
That seemed like a reasonable slow IAYF. Are things turning around?

I assume there's a game plan there....
Yes! Anyone know if we're still on the PP?

1st Period Shots on Goal 18-5 (from the scoreboard)
Thanks. Live Stats is telling me the game hasn't started yet.
Shots are:
Cornell: 18
RPI: 5
Other ECAC scores:
Brown 0
Yale 1
Union 2
Princeton 0
Quinnipiac 3
St. Lawrence 1
It didn't work last night either.
Thanks. Live Stats is telling me the game hasn't started yet.
So I assume you now have to pay for live stats...because it isn't included in the regular season package.::smashfreak::

Red back on the PP. Rita, any requests?
Damn! Too slow.
Looked to me like a couple times there they slid out to cover and Riley could have gone right to the goal himself.
Man it's so hard for us to score.
Wow, calls coming fast and furious: RCRR.
Wonder if the RPI coach will get a suspension after tonight's game :)
Goalie, Sieve, POST!
Paul Stewart to Schafer: "So ya wanted penalties? Ya got 'em..."
Red back on the PP. Rita, any requests?

Sorry, I was temporary blinded by Don Cherry St. Patrick's Day outfit. Eyes have adjusted.
We would REALLY LIKE another goal. REALLY LIKE.
LGR!
It's really heating up now.
Union now 3-0 over Princeton, midway in the 2nd period
Check that. Now it's 4-0
Mugford in the box.
Kill Red Kill!
Beautiful steal by Riley Nash near the end of the PP
Union up 4-0 now. More Sunday hockey.
edit: 4-1 now ... FWIW
Yes
2-0!
Riley Nash
from Brendan Nash & Patrick Kennedy!!!!
Huh. Even strength Cornell goal. Howboutthat?
RILEY GOAL!!! OR PAT KENNEDY?
The PP is, as usual, slow and deliberate. The umbrella is tighter, but still, there aren't a lot of passes down low. It's a safer power play in a way against team like RPI, since the guys up high have an easier time keeping the puck in the offensive zone.
BTW: Cornell scores a goal on a one timer!
Even, P. Kennedy's shot, R. Nash tipped it.
Assist to B. Nash
Whomever! We'll take it.
Tigers get 1 back late in the 2nd. Still a lot of hockey to be played.
Lucky # 7. Cornell back on the PP.
Or not. Cornell now playing 4 v. 4. Greening to the box to feel shame.
A makeup call by the referees.
Greening for holding, 4 on 4
Now four on three?
4x3. Thank you Schafer! Thank you!
Ok... Hockey game or Tennis match?
4 v 3. Now 2 engineers in the box.
Well, definitely no lack of penalties tonight.
Riley's 30th point of the season.
RPI color man complaining about the calls.
Now teams are 4 on 3, Cornell PP
RPI color man complaining about the calls.
I'm shocked! Shocked!
Cornell PP is in slow motion. Let's go!! step it up!
Barlow!
Whopee! 19 seconds left!
Barlow! PPG
BARLOW!~!! EVAN BARLOW AGAIN!
Barlow everywhere tonight.
Barlow!!
19 sec left in 2nd period.
RPI just handed the puck to Barlow, Cornell keeps the puck in the offensive zone, Barlow eventually gets the puck back and makes a nice shot from the stick side, up close.
Lot's of nice skating by Barlow.
Was it B or R Nash with the 2nd assist?
Was it B or R Nash with the 2nd assist?
B.
B Nash
Curious to see how many shots on goal in the 2nd period.
P. Kennedy also looks especially sharp tonight.
Yes, Kennedy looks awesome so far.
Blake Gallagher was the 2nd intermission guest. I only caught the last part of it, but I'm not so sure the fans (or some ELFers) like the Big Red being in a "do or die" situation. ::worry::

At Houston, that period would have been 31-14.
UMASS 0 @ Northeastern 1 midway through the 2nd period. (Game is on NESN)
SCSC 0 @ Minnesota 1, after 1 period.
Western Michigan 1 @ Michagan 4, after 2 periods.
Safety Sieve!
Lange is in net for RPI.
York must have had a 43 shot limit.
Where is Joe Devin?
Is that "you can't do that!" for icing? Funny.
Joe Devin has an undisclosed injury.
Is it possible, with all the penalties tonight, that NONE OF THEM have been on Burgdoerfer???
Joe Devin has an undisclosed injury.
Suffered during the 2/20 game against RPI.
Thanks Lynah80, there are a couple of players that should not be playing if Joe where healthy. I love Cornell but some of these guys play scared
Northeastern just went up 2-0 on UMASS.
Shots are 38-16 Princeton over Union even though Union leads 4-1.
Dan Nichols going off for hitting from behind.
I think just a 2 minute call.
Which just turned into a 4 v. 4.
Davenport spun down, now 4 on 4.
Just as I was about to say "Kill, Red, Kill", RPI did it for me.
And we're going up a man, thanks to another RPI penalty.
Appert pissed as RIP gets called for charging Scrivens.
Very nice Cornell EA setup on the delayed penalty.
Now 4 on 4.
I wonder, how much time has been played 5 v. 5?
Scoreboard says total shots are 43-8. Wasn't it 18-5 at halftime???::panic::
And we're whipping them in the third half, too! :-)
Mugford called for slashing. Gets a second penalty with a parting push in the face (hitting after the whistle). Stupid.
edit: Jillson will serve Mugford's second minor
4 on 4
5 guys in the boxes now. When Schafer talks, the league listens.
Gallagher hauled down on the face off. Had a lot of trouble getting off the ice. I hope he is okay.
Shots are 38-16 Princeton over Union even though Union leads 4-1.
Shots now 44-20 with a little over 5 minutes left and Union up 4-2. Let's Go Dutch.
Play has been very poor in the third period.
Cornell now 5 on 3.
Gallagher goes back to the locker room.
Princeton now trails 4-2 with about 5 minutes left in the 3rd.

I'm only listening, but I've got to imagine they have a point to some degree, with 20+ penalties called in the game. Unless there's a brawl on the ice, it seems unnecessary.

This is a little unfair. I think they were complaining that nobody can enjoy a game where play is stopped so often by the officials (with an unspoken caveat that the winning team will find it enjoyable anyway).
I found that they were pretty levelheaded about the whole thing. I didn't hear them complain that any particular penalty call wasn't justified, though they found the game was called unusually tight in general.

I only wish it had been St. Lawrence.
I missed it. where was Schafer tonight?
also, the team may have looked "tired" at the end, because with a 3 goal lead, and on the PP most of the third period, they didn't have to give it their all. also, more play time for players like Ross, Punches, etc.
RPI was thoroughly defeated and they looked like a really bush league team tonight. They were incapable of staying out of the penalty box: slashing, hooking, roughing, hitting after the whistle, whatever. Let's hope that no one was seriously hurt (on either team). The mood in the hotel for RPI tonight will be grim and hopefully, they will be thinking a lot about the long wait for 2009-2010.
Is that "you can't do that!" for icing? Funny.
Answering late, after just getting back from the game and reading through everything. But no, the "You can't do that" was in response to one of the refs (I think it was Murphy) retrieving Lange's stick for him. And as luck would have it, based on how quickly play came back into the RPI end, it's not clear that Lange would have been able to retrieve it himself. I was shocked. I'm pretty sure I've never seen that before. It seems to me that a goalie losing his stick is part of the game, and that having to weigh the option of leaving the net to retrieve it versus playing without it is also part of the game. I don't understand how a ref could essentially change the game by retrieving it for him.
Anyone that knows something about officiating care to comment? Dpperk, perhaps?

I agree - I was listening to two games, reading the message board, checking the Onion game tracker and doing the WSJ crossword. It was hard to make a fair comment. I was just enjoying their pain and at the same time I was being somewhat of a pain, myself.
It was Kotyra that got the stick. Almost positive refs can't do that. I know a player can't pick up another stick and hand it off. I've seen refs and linesmen pick up sticks and hold onto them until stoppages, but I've never seen an official hand a stick to a player or goalie.

THe only time they can do this is in a rec league.
MAJOR breach IMO.
Frankly, I found the officials to be too friendly with RPI players. We saw on linesman (Asst Ref?) patting an RPI player on the backside near the RPI bench. Lots of friendly chatter better the officals & RPI players. Add in the goalie stick thing and it looks bad for the on-ice officials.
RPI fans could easily counter that I should look at the number of penalties called on their team. Clearly no favoritism there.
the penalty calls were even until the last 9 min when cleary RPI just started tackling/holding/tripping anything that moved. at that pt in a 3-0 game does it really matter

Quote from: Rule 3-1-ee. A player or goalkeeper shall not participate in play while in possession
of more than one stick, except that a penalty shall not be assessed
to a player who is struck accidentally by the puck while carrying a
replacement stick to a teammate (see 6-4-c).
Quote from: Rule 6-4-c (also quoted elsewhere in the thread)b. A goalkeeper may continue to play with a broken stick until a stoppage
of play or until the goalkeeper legally has been provided with a stick.
c. A player whose stick is broken may not receive a stick thrown onto the
ice from any part of the rink but must obtain a stick at the players' bench
or be handed one by a teammate not serving a penalty. A goalkeeper
whose stick is broken may not receive a stick thrown onto the ice surface
from any part of the rink but may receive a stick from a teammate without
proceeding to the players' bench.
PENALTY—Bench minor.
I was 700 miles away and not even watching the video, so this is pure speculation, but I offer this hypothesis: Most sticks loose on the ice are there because they are broken and have been dropped, as required. Kotyra reacted to the loose goalie stick on the ice as he would normally to a broken stick, picking it up to get it out of play. Once he had it in his hands, he realized it wasn't broken and then faced the problem of what to do with it.
We've seen quotes from the rules and from the statisticians manual. There must be an officials manual somewhere.
Then allow me to clarify. The goalie lost his stick behind the net. Cornell was in RPI's end and got a bunch of chances and shots that were blocked or saved, but he was stickless for a good 20-30 seconds. Eventually RPI got the puck out of the zone. Kotyra was the trailing ref and was behind the net. When everyone had cleared the zone, he skated over, picked up the stick, and handed it to the goalie. It was completely deliberate and ridiculous. All the officials' rules are in the rulebook.

But as stated here: Rule Book Quote (http://elf.elynah.com/read.php?1,141894,141918#msg-141918)
only the goalie can play with a broken stick. So for your theory to be true either Kotyra didn't remember the rules or can't tell a goalie stick from a regular stick or picked the stick up and then thought
"OOPS - WTF do I do with this thing?"
None of these constitute good officiating. But then that was what many at the rink thought about the whole evening.
