Quote from: Inthaca JournalPittsford's John Knisley was named co-player of the year in Section 5's East Division on Friday. Knisley has verbally committed to play for Cornell.
This is a NY State HS player.
Stats: GP G A TP PPG SHG PIM
2008/09 Pittsford 22 15 17 32 7 1 35.5
listed as 5' 7" and 160 lbs
could be another Topher (YEAH) unless he grows some . . .
Knisley has been mentioned before. He's still very young, Heisenberg has him listed at 5'9". I'm pretty sure he's going to be a 2011 recruit, not 2010.

I was going to reply that for that league, those stats aren't that impressive, and I can't qualify that enough. Good hockey, but D1 players in NYS section V hockey will blow it off the map. That being said, didn't realize he was a freshman.
I expect he will follow other talented section V players to either NE prep or juniors (e.g., Marty Reasoner (McQuaid/Deerfield/BC).
When I played in that league, several talented players left after their sophomore year for juniors or prep. schools. I recall Reasoner, Sean Richland (Michigan), and Jason Bonsignore (juniors) bolted. Bonsignore's claim to fame was being drafted #4 overall in '94, ahead of Ryan Smyth by the Oilers.
Can't remember many local Big Red connections, but I believe Sam Paolini ripped it up his freshman year in Rochester, before moving onto Choate (NE prep.)
Which of course, begs the immortal quote from Herb Brooks in Miracle, "some throwaway game in Rochester!"
Either way, nice shout out to upstate NY hockey, and nice to see the Big Red locking up "local" talent instead of losing it to BC (Gionta, Reasoner).
I'm sure there are other local Rochester kids that have gone on and done great things, and I apologize if I missed the more recent; I am just commenting on the players I remember, and don't want to get ripped up on the forum for any incidental errors. I'd actually be curious to hear how Cornell had done recently in recruiting in upstate NY.

Pfft. We do both.

Just a few quick comments given that I grew up in the town next to Pittsford. First, Herb's famous quote (from my favorite sports movie) was referencing Rochester, Minnesota.
Let's not forget Mark McCutcheon lived in Pittsford (but was born in Ithaca) while his dad coached Rochester, though he obviously came for reasons other than geographic proximity. Rory Fitzpatrick grew up in Irondequoit and left for Sudbury of the OHL at 17.
Ryan Callahan went to Hilton High School and played for the Rochester Junior Americans before moving onto the Guelph Storm of the OHL.
Both Gionta brothers play professionally and went to BC. Brian's younger brother, Stephen, currently plays for the Lowell Devils and is team captain. I believe both players played all four years of high school hockey for Aquinas Institute.
By and large, I tend to think the most promising hockey players from the area go play in juniors in Canada because of geographic ease. Patrick Kane went to London for example. The area just doesn't produce the quality crop of talent that an area like Salmon Arm, BC does.

Rochester does pretty well... currently playing (off the top of my head):
Ryan Grimshaw (NTDP/Harvard)
Billy Sauer (NTDP/USHL/Michigan)
Connor Knapp (EJHL/Miami)
Kevin Montgomery (NTDP/Ohio State/OHL)
Mark Zengerle (Northwood/BCHL/Wisconsin '09)
Tom Pizzo (EJHL/Clarkson)
Dan Reed (Salisbury/Clarkson)
Pat Kelliher (EJHL/St Lawrence)
Greg Collins (USHL/New Hampshire -- brother Chris was a Hobey finalist at BC)
Cory Schneider (BCHL/Ohio State)
Mike Conderman (Cushing)
Joel Goodsell (Choate)
Ben Waldman (Pomfret)
Nick Bondurant (Choate -- Central Scouting list)
Kids from last year's Alliance U16 program (in addition to Knisley):
Shane Prince (OHL)
Phil Lane (OJHL)
Trevor Mingoia (Berkshire)
Cole Bardreau (NTDP '09 camp invitation)
Riley Bourbonnais --might be the top player in the state
I don't know how many guys are playing pro -- Giontas, Callahan, Collins, Whitmore, Reasoner...
