Title: ESPN Heckling Article
Post by: cth95 on January 29, 2009, 10:41:46 AM
I thought this was interesting.  It gives some pretty good general rules as well as input from players of various sports as to what actually gets in their head.

We will probably agree with most of these; but, based on the lengthy "Notice to Ticket Holders" thread, there will be some discussion about Rule #4.

Quote(8) THOU SHALT NOT SLUR PART II
Read this: former Rockets guard Vernon Maxwell was suspended in 1995 for punching a fan, but can you blame him? Maxwell claimed the spectator made a crack about his stillborn daughter (though it was never proved). Comments about tragedies cross the line, as do racial and sexual slurs. Still, shades of gray exist. "Everybody has a breaking point," says Jacobs. "For most people, that point is when you start talking about their family." Szasz draws his line at families, but Ficker (who once taunted former NBA journeyman Lewis Lloyd by reminding him about delinquent child-support payments) has a different take. "If it's public record, it's not offensive," he says. Then again, Ficker's an attorney.
A line about delinquent child support payments isn't about the guy's family, it's about the guy being a deadbeat.

I don't like how Duke is always cited in this kind of article. I brought a particularly vocal Duke Bball fan to the 05 playoff series against Clarkson, and her comment was, "I am shocked and appalled."

The distinction was that 90% of the cheers at Cameron are positive and directed at their own players. Nearly all of ours are negative and against the other team.

Hey Scrivens!
You're not just a goalie, you're a fence!
You're not just a fence, you're a wall!
You're not just a wall, you a dam!
You're not just a dam, you're a missile defense system (but one that actually works)!
You're not just a missile defense system (even if it were one that actually worked), you're very good!
You're very good!  You're very good!  You're very good!  You're very good!
Wooooooooooooo!

"You have syphilis" is ok.
"You gave your linemate syphilis" is not.

Exhibit 1: That Duke fan makes cheer sheets.  They need cheer sheets?

Not OK: "Your girlfriend has the clap."
OK?: "Now the whole team does."
