OK...I'll start. Watching on TV from frozen Ithaca!
The good:
- Powerplay is really coming along. Both units moving the puck well. 2 for 4 is not bad!!
- 5x5 play is solid. All lines contributing. Hard to match lines on the road, but everyone did their jobs.
- Blocking shots both 5x5 and on the PK. Everyone does it.
- Scrivens! Probably only 5 or 6 scoring chances by Onion. He's managing his concentration for 60 minutes - much better than last year!
The not so good:
- CU is taking too many penalties - some of the dumb variety.
- Defensive zone turnovers - more than Schafer would like to see. Not as many in the neutral zone which is good.
- Still need to finish and drive the net. Nice goal by Collins by doing just that!
The weird:
- Barlow falling down on a Union delayed penalty and then having to hustle back to deflect the puck away from our empty net. Haven't seen that happen too many times! Maybe the team shouldn't be watching O'Byrne replays on YouTube!
- Scrivens! Probably only 5 or 6 scoring chances by Onion. He's managing his concentration for 60 minutes - much better than last year!
...and yet Union managed to get 29 shots off on him, so his save % and his GAA improved tonight.
Great game from the start by "The General Riley Nash",he is just so great with the puck, makes it look so simple, like he is in slow motion.
Cornell continues with its best record after 16 games in the Schafer era:
.844 2009 12-1-3
.813 2003 13-3-0
.750 2006 11-3-2
Best records in games 17-32 in the Schafer era:
.969 2005 15-0-1
.906 2003 14-1-1
.906 2002 14-1-1

Anyone know for sure whether that's the case?

Not the case...I know for sure of at least two situations in ECAC play where a team scored an "own goal" after accidentally knocking the puck into their own empty net on a DP. I think one involved Union and 'Gate perhaps in the last 2 years? I can't remember the specifics of the other example, but it definitely counts as a goal if it goes in, hence Barlow's mad dash to knock it away.

As I recall a goal would be awarded in this case tonight where Cornell was last to touch it. However, if the puck would have been deflected (even inadvertently) by a player of the penalized team then the goal would not count.
I actually saw this happen either last year or two years ago at Cheel. Delayed penalty on Clarkson, Union pulled their goalie. D'Alvise was forechecking a Union defender, the defender lost control and bam, ENG midway through the first period.
Barlow's save made the top 10 plays on Sportscenter tonight!
However, it looked like Seminoff missed the backpass, then Barlow hustled to get back after he fell down. Great effort on his part.

Dumb and lazy. It's one thing to be a physical team that takes a lot of roughing, charging, et al. penalties, but hooking, holding, tripping just means you are out of position or aren't moving your feet and you are reaching. That will come back to bite them in one of these games where they are hanging on by a goal sooner or later, so this is a habit I'd like to see them break.
Just saw Barlow's save on the top 10 this morning.
Incredible effort!

I was quite shocked ::bugeye:: last night to see that the play made SportCenter's top ten.
A lot of their "hockey highlights" tend to be like the one shown two plays before Barlow's... fights. Apparently a fight involving a team with Chiefs as a nickname qualifies it for TopTen consideration.
Not that I'm against fighting in hockey (it has its place), but there are enough awesome goals and saves and then a few exceptional things that you only see once a season (i.e. Barlow's play) that should be in the highlight clips.

I was shocked when the announcers said we're the 5th least penalized team (or something like that) in the country. It seems like we're always taking bad penalties this year.

Although I haven't looked at the figures to back this up, I'm guessing we've also played the fewest (or near the fewest) games. So if they're looking at total penalty minutes, and we've played, say, 3-8 fewer games than many of the teams, it's not really a fair comparison. If they were looking at penalty minutes per game, my point is moot.

Cornell has averaged 12.6 penalty minutes per game. Five Division I teams average fewer. Holy Cross also has 12.6.

Since ESPN declined to re-sign a broadcasting deal with the NHL (post work-stoppage), that network has been shoving the sports that they do broadcast (basketball and football) down our throats. I get my daily sports news from PTI, and even that has turned into the all-basketball show, thanks to Wilbon. The only time hockey gets mentioned is when something outrageous happens, like the Sean Avery "sloppy seconds" nonsense. If someone on a talking head show mentions hockey, it's usually accompanied with the same snide "oh, is that still a sport? Nobody likes that! What network broadcasts that...I can't find it on my tv...har har har" jokes.
ESPN worked hard to gobble up competitors and have a near monopoly. Now they can pretty much dictate what the American sports fan likes.
that was definitely a thrill to watch.... "stick save and a beauty"
not sure if it is on the website. best bet is to watch sports center today
It seems like we're always taking bad penalties this year.
It does feel like it, although the numbers suggest otherwise. Maybe they're taking penalties at clutch times. At least the kill has been great, and they have a very good net goal differential on special teams.
If ESPN has a monopoly, it's only short term. IPTV (TV over the Internet) already is popular in Europe in standard-definition and eventually it'll be HD. It isn't just phones where Europe is way ahead; the same applies to broadband speeds.
So by the time we got ESPN branded a monopoly and did something about it, the market will -- probably -- take care of ESPN.
What's scary to me is NFL-TV. When the NFL packages the announcers along with the shows, seldom will be heard a discouraging word.
... but, yeah, it sucks that you can't get Cornell hockey or a good college hockey package on any system - Comcast, TimeWarner, DirectTV, whatever.

When you're playing a lot of one-goal games they're all clutch times.
Just some info for you NHL fans -- there are a ton of full hockey games online for free at hulu.com. It may take a few days to get them on the site, but there are plenty there and if you missed your favorite team playing on one of hulu's partner networks, it will likely be up there at some point in full with limited commercials.
Also, some neat, full older games at:

And the NHL YouTube channel with lots of highlights and stuff:
