Title: Football 11/15: Columbia 17 Cornell 7 F
Post by: nyc94 on November 15, 2008, 04:00:52 PM
So says ESPN.com

Columbia improves to 2-7 (2-4 Ivy).  Cornell falls to 4-5 (2-4 Ivy).

Cornell was intercepted 4 times.

Okay, so the game at Columbia is guaranteed-win day *most* years. Sheesh.

For "most" teams, Bill.  But not Cornell.  Winning two Ivy games in a league that has Dartmouth and Columbia is simply unsatisfactory.  I'll say it again:  This program's going nowhere.

That was hard to watch.

Wasn't there a time when Dartmouth was the gold standard for Ivy football and Columbia (some things never change) and Brown were the doormats?

Of my 4 years, we lost to Columbia 3 times.  Only for my "Seniors on the Field" game (1995) did we finally break that bugaboo.

Quote from: ObitCoaching 16 seasons at Dartmouth, Blackman led his teams to seven of the first 15 championships in formal Ivy League play, and his squads were undefeated and untied in 1962, 1965 and 1970.

Obit had a very funny line by Blackman after his return to the Ivies to coach Cornell (with a lot less success than at Dartmouth):

>>> Despite the less-than-overwhelming success his second time around in the Ivies, Blackman once remarked: ''I like the Ivy League -- the only conference where the coaches are paid more than the players.''

That would be Friday March 17, 2000, as the obit is dated March 20, 2000.

Regardless of the date, I read it anyway. This quote from Blackman made it worthwhile:
''I like the Ivy League -- the only conference where the coaches are paid more than the players.''
