Title: Signs and Cheers for USA Under-18 Dev. Team
Post by: BMac on October 13, 2008, 11:11:47 PM
I feel that we don't use the Elynah forum enough as a resource for doing what the Lynah Faithful do best- come up with clever ways to egg our opponents on.

In light of the somewhat unique opportunity of facing an under-18 team that isn't another college, let's brainstorm!

Other than the staple "You can't buy porn" and "We've had sex," what can we come up with?

"Past your bedtime" is always a fun one.

Considering that some of our freshmen tend to enter Cornell at age 21, we have a few years on them.

"Pee-wee hock-ey!" [clap][clap][clapclapclap]  is a nice standby.

There's always, mockingly, "U S A! U S A! U S A!"

And this might be a good new one:"[<--]HighSchool!  [-->]University!  [<--]HighSchool!  [-->]University!..."

Plus, I hope someone will dig up some online dirt for us again as in the past.  Who always brought that stuff out?

LET'S
GO

someone who in my opinion has no class.

Goalie's phone numbers, girlfriends, family, etc have always been out of bounds in my opinion.

and yes I feel the same way about the idiots who do this sort of crap at Cheel.

It's not personal, but where does that leave the infamous Clarkson cheer: "Hey [Cornell goalie], I'm going to take off [Cornell Defensemen]'s skate and slit your throat."

::rolleyes::

One would think there might be a way to incorporate America's best-known Under-18 hockey player: Levi Johnston.

Anybody have a differing opinion such as: "They're just kids. Be nice to them?" I'm not sure I feel that way myself but still ...

And are we sure those cheers won't rebound?
Cornell: We've had sex.
Under-18s: We've had more. And they're all under 18.
or
Cornell: We've had sex.
Under-18s: We've had Bristol.

I hate that cheer more than anything. In my opinion, that cheer should never, ever be used again. Lots of the cheers at Cheel are way out of bounds in my opinion. A few examples... "I smell tuna!" "The ref beats his wife" "Jesus Hates You!"...

Maybe I am wrong, but at clarkson people start those cheers to get noticed, and then everyone goes along because they are either a.) too drunk to think about what they are saying or b.) they don't want to be considered an outcast because they don't cheer.

When I hear people say things like "I can't wait for the hockey game so I can get hammered and insult the goalie" it bugs me, but I am a hockey fan, who goes to games to enjoy the hockey, and cheer for my team. Cheering for my team doesn't mean being vulgar/obscene/overly rude to the other team. I am all for trying to get under the other teams skin and making there experience less than pleasant, but you can do that without being crude/rude/etc...

No offense to Dpperk29- I'm just trying to get the conversation back on track. We all agree here, now let's make fun of those damn kids.

So, can we get back to brainstorming? What are we (eLf) good for if we can't come up with some material before games?

I just tried to track down their record, in case we can find anything funny there. Couldn't find it online- hopefully they lost to Onion or something?

Funnier, less insulting-of-children than "past your bedtime," but more syllables. Unlike Joe Biden ("Let me say it again"), you only get one chance for a laff and the fewer syllables the better. ("Ref, you suck" is good on this measure if none other.)

The first time I heard the "Ref, you suck" cheer, I was at the Verizon Center. I thought they were cheering "F- You. Suck!"

since I derailed the thread, here are some ideas...

"we can win the lotto"
"Warm up the school bus"
"We're from the 80's" (though that might not be such an insult)
"You're Grounded" (when they take a penalty maybe?)
"Bag my groceries"
"Grow a beard"

If yes, then "Come to school here.  We have fans, Harvard doesn't." - or Princeton or whichever school we might be recruiting against.

"past your bed time"
"have your mom start the bus"
"can't buy porn or cigarettes"

Yours are the best so far. Particularly "You're grounded" when they take a penalty, which is funny without being overly insulting. "Warm up the school bus" is pretty good, too.

On the off chance -- very off chance? -- one of them is thinking of Cornell, you don't want them to hate the place ... but rather be impressed and wanting to be of the great tradition. More likely they want to skate a year at Minnesota and then go pro.

Wish I could try -- will be stuck in MA during the game. :(  It would be more useful if they were the Canadian U-18 anyway...

It looks like there will be livestats for the game, but no radio.  If I've got that wrong someone please correct me!  I'm surprised, though, to see a radio link the Western Ontario game.

Sorry in advance for any thread drift.

Speaking of the usage of Elynah, I've felt that this forum has been getting less and less known and used by current students.  Is it because Hockeymania on campus largely died after '05-'06, or some other reason?  If more students knew about the forum, would it help rejuvenate the student fan culture?  I don't know.  Should we do anything to promote the site to Freshmen and other newcomers this Saturday?  I think it could be a good idea.

I want to hear from other current students on this topic.

According to http://www.crimsonhockey.blogspot.com/, David Valek is being looked at by the Crimson. Maybe's he's still looking around?

Sorry, you're going to hear from me first.

I think that this has always been - going back to CHDF days - a mostly alumni board. I think it would be great if more students got involved but I think most current students have better things to do than listen to a bunch of olds get wistful about how hockey was back in their day. The people who care about Cornell hockey after they graduate eventually find this place.

Ebilmes and I are taking over from Doug the responsibility of holding a "cheer training" seminar with the freshman class in the next couple weeks.  I am planning on mentioning elynah to them as both a resource and opportunity to talk Cornell hockey.

I also think there are probably a number of fans who follow the forum, just don't post.  I know of a few students who do that, at least.

If you're a big Cornell hockey fan and you're on campus you don't necessarily need to read or post on this forum in order to talk about the team and college hockey.  You probably have a bunch of friends around who are also fans.  If you're an alum who lives a couple thousand miles away from Lynah (or even a couple hundred) you're probably surrounded mostly  by folks who don't have any idea that there is college hockey.  So you find this and other internet sites to connect to the fan community.

Yeah, the code used to put teams with no official games played each in their own little bubble with rating 100 and RRWP .500 but I took them out to make the diagram smaller.  They are still included in the RRWP calculation, though.

jtw,

That's clever coding to get the arrow from NH to Wi to scoot through the small gap between RPI and DU, at least I think it is. It could probably have been avoided by moving DU to the right a bit more. ::whistle::

That part I can't take credit for; the diagram actually gets drawn by GraphViz/dot. ;-)
