Title: Alumni in the Pros - September 2008
Post by: Beeeej on September 08, 2008, 01:54:24 PM
Sorry... I just got really tired of seeing "Alumnis" and "Auguust" at the top of the forum.  It's been September for over a week now.
Title: Abbots

If you look beyond the photo referenced here http://elf.elynah.com/read.php?1,132201,132366#msg-132366 and try to read the text http://hd.se/sport/2008/08/08/roegle-malmoe-0-0/, you will see several occurrences of "Abbot".  It looks to me as though they were both in the starting line-up and Chris scored a goal in the third period of the game being reported.

Even further down, there's an ad for a Canadian chain called "Boston Pizza."  Because if there's one thing that Boston is famous for...it's pizza??

Well, it's famous for its regional specialty, candlepin pizza.

What is your problem with Green and Gold?  Just upset about the losses last year to Clarkson, or ???  And what does that have to do with an opinion on New Haven pizza?

NH pizza is overrated in the opinion of nearly everyone in our group who had it a couple of times in the past several years.  Of course, were spoiled having had the superior NYC and NJ pizza.

In the Traverse City prospects tourney, Ray Sawada has been playing for the Stars team and has 1 pt through 2 games:

QuoteTraverse City thoughts
Monday, September 15, 2008-9:52:am
I watched the replay of the Stars-Blues game from Traverse City last night. I saw most of these guys at development camp in July but there were a few I was looking forward to seeing for the first time or the first time in a while. Anyway, I had a few observations.

First, it looks more like a scrimmage than a game, which is basically what I expected. There's not much structure out there.

Second, the guys I expected to stand out did stand out.

Among the big names, I thought James Neal looked very good. He appears to have an edge to his game right now and that's good to see with camp less than a week away. Jamie Benn, who I thought was a little lackluster at the development camp in July, was very sharp as well. I thought Ray Sawada looked pretty good. I liked what I saw out of Sergei Korostin and Ivan Vishnevskiy as well. Guys like Korostin and Vishnevskiy are still in the development stage, but you can see the skill level in both.

Some of the other players I noticed: I thought Matt Climie was solid after a shaky start. Climie is a guy to watch since he is No.3 on the goaltending depth chart right now. I think Colton Sceviour is a good prospect. Aaron Gagnon looks like he's made some strides. I've liked Trevor Ludwig each and every time I've seen the kid play.

As far as Fabian Brunnstrom, I am not reading too much into anything I see at this point. I'll watch tonight's replay and see how he progresses from the first game to the second and see where he is at the end of the tournament and then were he is this weekend when the real training camp begins. He's a work in progress as he adjusts to like and hockey in North America.

If you get a chance to watch these games keep in mind that these guys are playing against players at their own development level. The real test for guys like Neal and Sawada will come in Frisco and during preseason games. That's when they are going to have to shine to have a shot at making the opening night roster. Nobody's making the Stars based on Traverse City.

The Bakersfield Condors announced:
QuoteThe rights to McKee, 24, have been acquired from the Checkers in exchange for future considerations. He spent the majority of the 2007-08 season with the Phoenix RoadRunners in the ECHL, while also appearing with Augusta (ECHL) and the Iowa Stars (American Hockey League). He went 6-11-4 with a 3.92 GAA and a .894 save percentage in the ECHL last season.

It looks like even though it's a Bakersfield signing, the Ducks are involved at some level:

http://www.bakersfield.com/136/story/554501.html

He's described as the "fifth goaltender" in the Ducks system, and LeNeveu is the 3rd or 4th. They could easily end up sharing time for the Iowa Chops (what kind of team name is that?) if McKee plays well or there's some kind of injury.

Ray Sawada was captain of the Dallas Stars prospect team which won the championship of the Traverse City Prospects Tournament with an 8-3 victory over Atlanta on Wednesday night.  Ray was a +2 with 1 goal in the championship game.

There's a nice photo of Ray accepting the trophy on nhl.com here. (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=382352)

Watching the Rangers vs. Ottawa preseason game... Winchester's actually not playing bad (and getting quite a bit of ice time). Then again, if I played with Spezza and Heatley, I could probably get a few assists as well.

Krantz was released before their first preseason game with Montreal, but Bitz did play in the game. He got on the scoresheet, but it was because he was part of the first fight of the game. He didn't get the takedown but scored a big right hand on his way down according to reports. The Bruins won 8-3, along with 4 fights in the game - I guess there was still some bad blood leftover from last year's playoffs.

$2.5 mil per?  wow!  Congrats to Murray of course.

But looking from a salary growth standpoint for the NHL, that's an awful lot for a guy who's got 2 career NHL goals and 14 assists.  when guys like Braydon Coburn are at $1.3 mil; Shaone Morrison at $1.9 mil; even guys like Kronwall at $3 mil and Ryan Suter at $3.5 mil....

Murray's impact in the NHL has never been at the offensive end.  Clearly they've expressed their opinion of his value to them on the blue line, and I can't really find it in myself to disagree.

I think opposing players really keep their heads up more with him out there and he changes the flow of the game enough that he's a really valuable player.  That said, against good teams with fast forwards (like Dallas in the playoffs) I thought that his foot speed left him exposed at times.  But I would definitely want him on my team and I think he'll log enough minutes and continue to be an effective player, thereby justifying his contract.

The belief on the Kings board on hockeysfuture is that Matt has a very good shot of making the team, and that there are maybe 4 players vying for three open slots... something like that. Ted Purcell (Maine) and Brian Boyle (BC) are two of the others.

I was thinking that if their cards play out right we could potentially have more Cornellians playing in the NHL next year than ever before. The closest I could come up with was '88 (Thanks TBRW!) with Nieuwendyk, Dadswell, Eliot (just 2 games that year) and Hayward.

Next year we'll have:

Murray: a lock
O'Byrne: pretty close to a lock.
Moulson: likely to make the team out of training camp
Iggulden: probably the #1 callup to the Isles.
Sawada: last I read he and James Neal were fighting for a checking line slot on the Stars.

This will also partially come down to what happens with the Patrick O'Sullivan situation. He is currently holding out trying to get a contract and the parties both think they are in the right, so we'll see what happens. If O'sullivan does not end up signing with the Kings I would imagine Moulson is a virtual lock to make the team.

Follow the "Game Highlights" link on this page [ http://islanders.nhl.com/team/app?gameNumber=11&gameType=1&page=Recap&season=20082009&service=page ] to see...well...highlights of the Isles 2-1 OT win over the Bruins.  Iggy wears #37 and gets one call-out about halfway through but no mention on his steal leading to Smith's winning OT goal.
Who is this Yann Danis oitching half of a shutout in net for the Isles ? :) I don't mind rooting for another ECACer to do well.
Unless he's an Islander.  Good luck Iggy, but...yuck.
Has Brown started a "Danis for Vezina" site?

Matt Moulson's goal has put the Kings ahead 1-0 at the end of the 1st in a pre-season game against Anaheim in Las Vegas tonight.

Leneveu is not in goal for the Ducks tonight, backing up Jonas Hiller instead.

Bad night for O'Byrne.  Terrible giveaway led to the Red Wing's only goal.

Looks like the players in the CHL went out on strike. (http://www.reporterherald.com/news_story.asp?ID=19577)

I guess this will affect guys like Pegararo, McLeod, and Krantz.  I can't think of who else is playing down there this season.

A hockey players strike. That sounds like a great idea.
I know it doesn't fit the thread, but Hugh Jessimen made the latest cut with the Rangers, and is among the final 26 vying for a spot on the team.

Infuriating news for me personally because he is a huge douche.
