Those of you living in southern DC suburbs will find it a little easier to get a taste of Ithaca. The new Woodbridge Wegman's opened Sunday. Just off I-95, near Potomac Mills. Pig out!
As someone who didn't get the fascinations with Wegman's when I was in Ithaca I still don't get it. But more power to you if you do!

Nor did I, but my mom lives in NoVa and keeps talking about the Wegman's there, so it's not just an Ithaca fetish.
That still doesn't help. I realize real estate inside the beltway isn't cheap but goddamn it! Woodbridge is still a horrendous trek. That's where the IKEA is and I only go there early morning on the weekends.
It's funny, as I have lived with a Wegman's my entire life. But now, here in Buffalo, people are *really excited* for the arrival of a Whole Foods.
Personally, we could use a Trader Joe's. It fills a different niche than Wegmans/Whole Foods.

Well, compared to Wegman's, they suck.
As someone who didn't get the fascination of Wegman's growing up in Rochester when Wegman's was just another supermarket, I didn't initially appreciate its Kudzu-like spread. My wife does: choice, quality, more stuff than just a normal supermarket. With gas at $4 a gallon, we'll see if it still makes sense to travel four towns over.
The mark of superiority in our small New Jersey town is the local outpost of Trader Joe's. Even when the HS lax team falls out of the NJ top twenty and the commuter rail to Manhattan requires a change in Newark, spouses will speak at length at cocktail parties about the general superiority of a town with Trader Joe's. It's nice that you can buy dried cranberries as well as the more pedestrian dried apricots if you live in a TJ town, but lots of places have really good fruits and vegetables now.

My first introduction to a Wegmans came at my home in NJ so I was happy when I found out there was one in Ithaca as well. There are a few nice grocery stores out here in CA (Trader Joes is one, obviously) but I still miss that taste of home. As a side note... I would kill for $4 gas (I just filled up regular for over $4.50 yesterday).
