Murray absolutely playing out of his gourd in the first period at Dallas in game 6.

Fortunately it's hard to place too much blame when a goal is scored on the powerplay in the seventh period.
Except maybe to Brian Campbell, who was blatant enough to get called at 128:14.

I was one of them. Serves me right for turning on the game "just for a minute." How could I know it'd go till like 2 in the morning?!
Tough way for it to end, and I was slightly rooting for the Sharks... but I gotta say, I was kinda relieved at finally being able to go to sleep.

We'll also have to find anyone who subscribes to the San Jose Mercury news and saw the full page photo of the aftermath of the goal featuring a dejected Douglas Murray skating near the net.
Douglas seemed to be struggling throughout this series. His ice time was down and the Sharks had trouble clearing the zone when he was on. In the OTs, the TV announcers commented on how tired he looked (even compared to the other players) and how he was struggling to make the plays. He didn't make any glaring errors, and even had a nice shot in the first OT, but other D-men looked stronger as the game wore on. For the first time I was impressed with the play of Matt Carle.

Or maybe the rigors of a long NHL season, his first getting significant playing time, wore him down a bit? He did play more games overall with Cleveland in 2004 (72+9 vs. 66+13) but of course that's the AHL.

My guess is that he is a big strong guy who is simply not built for that kind of endurance. You don't see heavy marathon runners.

Good point. And there's no way to say he didn't look that way in Cleveland at the end of 2004 too. Not sure the jump to the NHL alone would cause that.
And Douglas goes to the worlds -
Quote from: San Jose Mercury NewsThree other Sharks are being added to European team rosters. Defenseman Douglas Murray will play for Sweden, forward Marcel Goc and goalie Dimitri Patzold for Germany.
When are the worlds? If it's soon it will be interesting (per the earlier discussion) to see whether he looks worn down at all.
I believe the worlds have started and are just finishing their first round, with players joining as their NHL teams exit the playoffs. Canada beat the US 5-4 scoring the GWG in the last minute, but both teams advanced to the next round.
The IIHF World Championship started on May 2 and goes through May 18. The preliminary rounds are occurring now, with the qualification round starting on Thursday.
Sweden's been pretty good so far, but they'll need Murray's help if they want to touch a medal, especially after dropping a 4-2 decision to the Swiss today.

Doug Murray "steamrolls", and Sweden beats Denmark, 8-1

Murray was ejected from Sweden's 3-2 loss to Russia on Saturday.
"It was perfectly clean", says Murray. "Maybe it could have been an interference call but that's it. It was a clean shoulder, not even close to be from behind"
Douglas Murray and Iggy might not be having a completely "restful" offseason. The Sharks fired Coach Ron Wilson (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=363254) today. Given how the Sharks exited the playoffs, it is not all that surprising.
It will be interesting to see who the Sharks hire as the new coach and if Murray will still fit in with the Sharks organization.
Pat Burns and Joel Quenneville both on the market right now as potential replacements.
My vote goes to Kevin Dineen of the Portland Pirates right now though. Take a look at what this guy has done out in Portland, knocking off a few Cornell Alum in Hartford and Providence this post-season. With Buffalo coming in to replace Anaheim as Portland's affiliate, he will be looking for NHL work, and Toronto, Colorado, Ottawa, and San Jose all will be chasing this guy.

I think Murray will be a constant in the San Jose organization for awhile. no matter how fast the game gets, a team will always need big, physical defense men. Murray has proven to be one of the best (if not the best) on that team defensively.

Ooooh Kevin Dineen :).
Well if the Sharks are looking for more "grit and intensity", Kevin Dineen defines those qualities. I remember him when he was playing with the Hartford Whalers back in the mid 80's (and even met him a few times). He stuck in the NHL because he would go in the corners and sacrifice his body in front of the net.
It would be nice to see a younger coach (NHL assistant or AHL Head Coach) get a chance rather than see some of the same coaches change mailing addresses.
Looks like the Abbotts will be playing together again next, this time in Sweden: Rögle (http://www.roglebk.nu/) (Scroll down to 4/22/08)
Rögle will be competing in the Swedish Elite League for the first time in 12 years next season after earning promotion from the second-tier league.
Quote from: Google TranslationSportchef Roger Hansson announces to Nätmagasinet to the Canadian twins Christen and Cameron Abbott is ready for games in Rögle BK 2008-09.
The two played together in the Norwegian Frisk Asker the past season with great success.
-- I was and looked at them in Frisk Asker and there are two guys with good attitude to hockeyn. Two winners who are good skridskoåkare and spreading a lot of energy.
This has made it clear Rögle with their non-EU player before returning to Elitserien.
-- Time will tell how much the conversion will be between Norwegian and Swedish Elitserien league, but I am confident that Chris and Cam has all the prerequisites to be successful in Rögle, "says Roger Hansson.
Chris is described as a högerfattad center, which is used to control the game on powerplay, while Cam is a ytterforward who are skilled in the game around the sarge.

Högerfattad. Not sure what that translates to, but is sounds really mean and bruising :).
Hahaha...you guys are funny.
I'm not expert on the Swedish language, but I believe högerfattad means right-handed, and "ytterforward who are skilled in the game around the sarge" means he is a winger who plays well on the boards.
Vesce played on Rogle BK in 2004-2005 IIRC, back when they were in SEL II.

And the take from the Russians, specifically Ovechkin...
"the Swedes played very dirty in the first period and did not give us a chance to play our game. They started hitting us right away. As a result, we lost Morozov due to injury, and then Kovalchuk for fighting. Kovy was absolutely right when he stood up for his captain. If I were him, I would also show my fists to the Swede.
I was very surprised that Ilya got a game penalty. Why? Kovalchuk didn't even drop his gloves. If he did drop his gloves, only bits and pieces would be left of the Swede ... I also think that Sweden intentionally went for this exchange – sacrificed this [Doug] Murray to injure our captain and rid us of our best scorer"
from Dump and Chase (http://dumpnchase.wordpress.com/2008/05/12/more-from-ovie-at-the-worlds/)
It is a tradition for Russian participants in the World Championships to complain loudly to the media about their opponents and the officials. ::rolleyes::

From what I can piece together, the patent linked on Google is the one and same that Doug is associated with. Apparently he provided the funding to his hotel school friends who came up with the idea (James Moriarty '03 and James Murray '00) and was involved in the company until he was called up from the minors.

Okay, not exactly Alumni news, but it still is the off-season, so a follow-up as to where Kevin Dineen and his brother Gord will be employed this fall is not too much of a stretch.
The Buffalo Sabres will keep Kevin Dineen as the head coach (http://3rdmanin.wordpress.com/2008/08/04/sabres-to-hire-kevin-dineen/) for the Portland Pirates in the AHL. The Pirates are now the Sabres AHL affiliate (last year they were the AHL team for the Ducks).
