For those who might be curious, 15-2 Ithaca College is #8 in the DIII poll. The Bombers beat RIT in the championship game of the Empire 8 Tournament on Sunday and earned an automatic bid to the DIII tournament. They and 13-1/#2 Cortland (their only loss came against IC in late March) are probably the best bets for Central NY to unseat the Maryland lacrosse hegemony (in the form of 18-0/#1 Salisbury) in the tournament. It looks like 9-2/#12 St. Lawrence might also make it into the tournament; they finished 6-0 in their conference, the Liberty League and host the 9-5 "Rensselaer Redhawks" (who?) in one semifinal, while 9-3 Clarkson plays 11-3 Union in the other. Neat.
Redhawks??
Redhawks??
Yeah, they're only the engineers in hockey and a few others sports. Didn't know that?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rensselaer_Polytechnic_Institute#Athletics
I can't speak for French Rage; I knew that they had changed the name in a lot of sports but think it's terrible generic re-branding (Rensselaer Redhawks! Miami Redhawks! Lowell Riverhawks! Lehigh Mountainhawks!) so I chose to mock it.
Redhawks is boring. If you're going to do something different like Engineers, go all the way, don't half-ass it.

Something exciting like Big Red? What was that about pot and kettle?::blush::

"Big Red" may not be a terribly thrilling or inventive name but it's not like some school committee did a marketing study and came up with it as the "best" choice. IIRC the name came about organically.
According to the CU Athletics Website:
Q: Why is your nickname the Big Red?
A: The nickname "Big Red" for Cornell teams originated in 1905. The late Romeyn Berry '04, then a recent Cornell graduate, was writing the lyrics for a new football song. Since Cornell had no nickname at the time, Berry simply referred to Cornell as the "big red team" and it caught on. Berry was graduate manager of athletics from 1919 through 1935 and was recognized as an outstanding authority on Cornell, its traditions and personalities. He was a distinguished writer and newspaper columnist locally. For his musical composition Berry won $25. The song earned a spot in the Cornell Verses, joining rowing songs and other lyrics descriptive of Cornell life.
The Big, Red Team
See them plunging down to the goal
See the ruddy banners stream
Hear the crashing echoes roll
As we cheer for the big, red team
Yea! Yea! Yea!
Chorus
Cheer till the sound wakes the blue hills around
Make the scream of the north wind yield
To the strength of the yell from the men of Cornell
When the big, red team takes the field
Yea! Yea! Yea!

Big Red may not be the most ferocious animal out there or something, but it's at least unique. Would you rather we be Tigers or Lions like five billion other schools.
My other point being it's stupid to have one name for some teams and another name for others, especially when the other name is boring and unoriginal. You're a bunch of engineers, show some pride and go all the way with it.

I definitely agree with that. But then, the school doesn't have the guts to continue to openly call themselves RPI. No, they are Rensselaer now. God forbid they be Polytechnic.

I personally would prefer to be Monotechnic.

I read that as "Monoethnic", but I'm pretty sure only an Asian-American could get away with that joke.
Not to mention the Lehigh Mountain Hawks were mis-named by the consultant who saw turkey vultures circling the campus.
