Title: Lax poll 4/21 - Cornell falls to T8
Post by: billhoward on April 21, 2008, 08:12:37 PM
The USILA poll has Cornell, Maryland, and Princeton in a virtual tie for positions 8-9-10 in the 4/21 poll. Seems about right.

I still wouldn't call us better than UNC but I think that is a much more accurate ranking than #3

If Cornell beats Brown and Brown beats Princeton, could there be three Ivies in the tournament?

No...They'll do a coin toss to determine the autobid and I don't think the other 2 are going to have enough quality wins to get in.

I think we're ranked about right but there's no justification for having Notre Dame above us.

Is there a head-to-head comparison before they resort to the coin flip?

Yes, but in a 3 way tie that's almost always pointless (not always, just almost always).

It would be this year.  For a 3-way tie, we'd have to beat Bruno, and they'd have to beat Princeton.  Otherwise, it's a two-way.

I wouldn't put much hope in the Darts knocking off Princeton.  We have to focus on beating Brown and Hobart and then hoping for the best.

Quint's bracket (which assumes the above plus Princeton winning the title) has us in as a #8 seed playing a first round game at home against Army.  Should we get past that, we would then play Duke in a second round game in Ithaca.

All of this is speculation at this point, but it's interesting to think about the possibilities.

Duke! In Ithaca! How many fans would they bring? 10? 20?

That's unfortunate, mnagowski.  Honestly, that was one of the most intelligent, coherent, and informative athlete-chat sessions I've ever seen on an espn-hosted site.  Well worth the time to read.

Well, one of them was a slight insult to Myers, as I asked whether or not the graduation of McGonagle has affected the caliber of their shooting.

The other was about their favorite poets, and what they thought of the poetry reading last night in honor of the CU Laxer that was killed in 9/11.

Nice to see it confirmed that John Glynn has asked for another year of eligibility.

Title: NCAA at-large bid logjam
Post by: Al DeFlorio on April 25, 2008, 08:16:11 PM
Competition for at-large bids is getting tougher.  With seven automatic bids, and at-large bids almost a certainty for Syracuse, Hopkins, and the four ACC teams, there are only three slots still available.  Included in the mix are Georgetown (conqueror of Duke: Loyola having taken the league's autobid), Army (beaten by Bucknell in the Patriot League semis), either or both Notre Dame and Ohio State (depending on who wins the Great Western bid), and, very possibly, Navy (losing 7-5 in the third to Colgate in the other Patriot semi).  It could very well be that only the champion will be selected from the Ivy League.

[Edit: Colgate 12, Navy 9 final; two of our so-called "good wins" are now not so good.]

I can't imagine 3 Pat league teams and only one Ivy.  Especially since we beat both Army and Navy.  Win out and we're in. Otherwise, I watch the championships on the Cape.  Wanna come over and barbecue, Al?

I can't imagine three either, Tim, but all it takes is any three of Navy, Georgetown, and Ohio State--if they lose the Great Western league--or UMBC--if they lose America East--and we're out.  Unless we somehow win the Ivy League, a pretty dicey proposition right now.

We have tickets for Foxborough, Tim.  Means at least four bridge crossings on Memorial Day weekend.::worry::

Talk about logjams!

UMBC has what- one quality win vs Maryland?  I think THEY have to win America East.  True that Patriot league tournament upsets damage our quality win record, though. I really don't see two GWLLs or Ameast and only one Ivy.  Must......beat.....Brown......ARRRRGH.

Pretty good prognostication 2 weeks out.

Ohio State vs. #8 Cornell

Barring upsets, we get Duke in Ithaca.
