To start the discussion I thought this article from today's Syracuse Post-Standard was interesting. (http://www.syracuse.com/localcolleges/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1207472218110140.xml&coll=1)
I know the Syracuse fans arent expecting it to be all that close a game.. Cu needs to play a complete game which they have struggled to do all year..

They thought the same in 2000... what's the weather forecast? We all know lax was designed to be played in a climate controlled dome.

Edit: I'm not sold on Syracuse. It seems like they've beaten up on a lot of mediocre teams (Villanova, Binghamton, Hobart, Loyola, Princeton) and played one-goal games with all four of the good teams on their schedule (Army, Virginia, Georgetown, Hopkins), winning three of them including two in overtime. That tells me that they're very much on par with those teams in ability, but not significantly better. They've managed to comfortably win games that they should win (unlike Hopkins), but they haven't blown anybody good off the field and while they may win at Schoellkopf I expect another close game.

I see this game much the same way. A one or two goal margin, with either team equally capable of winning.
Having watched both teams several times the biggest difference is that cornell has had periods of very sloppy play that mared otherwise good efforts.. In addition SU has played they best at home, and has controlled the faceoffs in those games,
CU can win but they need to stop those 5-10 min periods of mistakes, that let a team like Harvard back into the game.

The Ithaca Journal writes about today's game from the Syracuse (http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080408/SPORTS/804080352) and Cornell (http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080408/SPORTS/804080355) perspectives.
Quote"We have a lot of respect for Cornell, they're one of the only teams that tries to run up and down with us, and the past couple of years have been great games to watch," Nims said. "Last year came down to the wire in favor of them, and I like seeing them every year because they run with us and they've got a great program."
Quote"We've played in stretches where I feel we can beat the best, but we've also played in stretches when I feel anybody can come out and beat us," Tambroni said. "I think it's just going to be which team shows up and how long that stretch is going to be, for good or for bad."
Some stats I'll be watching:
EMOs: SU converts on 46% of theirs; Cornell limits their opponents to a 26% conversion rate.
Ground balls: SU only misses on 42% of the GBs; Cornell picks up GBs at a 56% rate.
Faceoffs: SU wins 62%; Cornell wins 59%.
Clears: SU disrupts 25% of their opponents' attempts; Cornell fails on 14% of their opportunities.
We'll see who gets closest to their numbers.

My two keys, first from the Cornell article:
QuoteBut Seibald was quick to put tonight's game into perspective for the Big Red's netminder, who won the position late in the preseason and has followed up with sold efforts in recent wins over Penn and Harvard.
"He may not say much, but it definitely has an importance because it's a big game for the team," he said. "I don't know if it's a bigger game for him because he's got some buddies he used to play with, but I know he's going to be extra-focused. He knows it's an important game for the team."
Then from the SU article:
QuoteSyracuse outshot the Tigers 41-23, earned a 40-20 advantage in ground balls and won 15 of 22 faceoffs behind one of the nation's best X-men, Danny Brennan.
If they control faceoffs and we have any problem in goal, it will be a long night. A prior post talked about SU winning their good team games by 1, and beating up on mediocre ones. Well, that's about what we've done. Something has to give.
A prior post talked about SU winning their good team games by 1, and beating up on mediocre ones. Well, that's about what we've done. Something has to give.
That's a fair point. That suggests a fairly even game to me.
RedCast has just removed its link for the game and changed the start time of the webcast to 6:40. Surprise.
[Edit: start time now listed as 6:50.
The genii at ICS told me to re-log and the game would be on. Yeah, right.]
Time Warner Capital region isn't carrying the game tonight. They're showing Yale at Albany. Sheesh- two teams with 6 wins between 'em.::wtf::
Now 7:00 PM.
I appreciate that there's someone there clearly watching this situation and updating the time - that's a plus. But you'd think there success rate would be a bit higher.

Your point?
redcast up for me now. the feed is a gray box with no sound... but it's a feed.
Video working here (not so much for the audio though, unless its just a commercial break)
anyone else now getting video without audio? wait... there it is now. All right.
Also the Orange look awfully red...
They have carried EVERY home Syracuse Game this season, and away ones that TWCNY cbroadfcasts - ie; tonight's, if not on their regular channel, on Difgital Channel 1. This is the first one they haven't.
If you like UAlbany I can burn a disc for you.
Answered you under your next post.
Edit: strange, it keeps posting unfer this one. Oh well...
ICS tech support--as usual--says: "Most delays, like tonight, were due to trouble at the actual site (Cornell)."
Wow, the Orange really do look very red. Perhaps they're trying to confuse is.
1-0 Cornell, Romero
We look tight.
3 in a row for Cuse including an EMO, 1-3.
4 min left in 1st. If anybody cares.
D needs to step up. Every SU goal was a chip shot.
4-3 cuse with 3 mins left in the first quarter. I don't understand why on the last cuse goal we were sliding to a guy that was behind the goal line, but I never played lax.
5-3 syracuse at the end of 1.
Early 2nd period.
Won the GB and FO stats in the first but Syracuse still had twice as many shots. Making our D look like Swiss cheese.
Stop taking penalties!!!
We're just not getting good looks.
We look like we're in a fog. Intimidated, perhaps? What was up with that 6 on 4?
Jovan Miller pushes on loose ball, we then get a failure to advance.
We look stagnant on offense, but credit to SU's D as well.
Score, pleeeaaassseee!
Narrows the lead to 11-1...Start of third Q
Penn goes up 1-0 on Princeton 4 min into 1st q..
7-3 su
Talks about wrestling first, then calls the lacrosse coach Jack Tambroni...::rolleyes::

But "Jack" IS a role model for our other coaches.::thud::
So far this looks like the last 20 minutes of the Harvard game, Tim.
Yup. Only worse cuz they're not getting any feeds to the guys inside. Seems like they're trying too hard from outside to loosen em up
Ualbany up 15-4. Penn staying close to Princeton but trail 6-4.
We're totally outclassed here, so all the penalties (trip of Siebald, slashes, illegal body checks_) probably just don't matter.
Cornell will have to run the table now or--at best-- we get an at-large and play round one on the road.
The repeated penalties are just unbelievable.
Boy, that was a great chance to get some momentum, but a shaky pass.
And no call again.
Dumb shot by Moyers.
And we throw it away.
Biggest difference I see with our team from last year is the lack of crisp passing. It's been a repeated theme for the season, which will bite you in the rear against a quality team.
We've had the chances to get back in to this game but we keep just throwing away passes or taking shots without backup etc. Uncharacteristic things for Tambroni coached teams.
That's a backbreaker
The clincher.
we've gone to sleep in front of our net.
Schmicker has been doing a nice job at the X, but that was a silly play.
11 shots on goal is not gonna beat a good team
Those guys can really rip it. Hard to fault Myers on many of these shots.
Awful job backing up shots -- can't remember when I've seen it so bad.
Too bad, but Syracuse has more horses than we do this year. Still an awful lot to play for, so we we have to buck it up and take care of business against Dartmouth on Saturday.
It's supposed to be a rebuilding year. Okay, so far we've had a rebuilding game here and against UNC.
From afar it looked as if we should have just let Seibald try a couple more one-on-ones. Probably not that simple.
Cornell can't look past Dartmouth etcetera, and once we get past the Green, the season really hinges on Princeton. At least the NCAA seeding committee has to take the Ivy champion - although they're probably thinking of a way to screw Princeton / Cornell / whoever out of that.

We also can't leave Brown out of the equation.

I think this sums up tonight's game well. Add a rash of penalties, shake well, and you get 15-8.
As Tim pointed out, on offense we just couldn't get the ball inside.
Right. What can Brown do to you.
Bruno came painfully close last year up in Providence.
Brown keeps me awake at night.
Brown keeps me awake at night.
Brown right now is 7-2 and along with Princeton is circa 16-17 in the polls. Brown has two one-goal wins, a one-goal loss to Hofstra, and an 11-8 loss to Denver (in early March). We play Brown at home and Brown closes with Princeton in Providence.
