I'm exploring the feasibility of moving eLynah to commercial hosting given the impending IP pricing crap. I think my private server would melt under the load. In the end, I might just have to upgrade that server because of eLynah's, umm, remarkable load. Some of the numbers were amusing.
For eLF alone in just over a year there were over 10 million requests from almost 10,000 distinct hosts and almost 40 gigabytes transferred. That's a lot of text! Also, only 12.58% of that is to Cornell hosts, so the vast majority falls under the IP pricing crap. The most frequently visited thread was the LeNeveu Juniors thread.
As for this year's photos, almost 9719 full-size views of Harvard photos, 8506 views of BU game 2, 7113 views of BU game 1, 6350 views of Brown, 6318 views of Dartmouth pics. eLynah had 13,289 distinct hosts in just over a year.
Anyone got free beefy server space? :-D
Wish I could say "yes," Age, but count me in for a share of any costs.
Nah, the hockeycam was a special case due to big one-time costs. Commercial hosting would be on the order of serveral hundred bucks a month, so that won't happen. Wherever eLynah/eLF ends up, it will have to bo somewhere I can absorb the costs. Thanks though. =]
how about micropayments? read 10 posts for a penny? ::nut::
Can't offer free server space, but highly recommend getmehosted.com for cheap, reliable hosting.
A brief update: Age and I talked about this a little bit yesterday and I found some information on it. The pricing scheme has been reduced from $5/gig to $3/gig, and at current traffic levels (sans videos/hockeycam), he said it would be feasible.
I also encouraged him to look into getting an exception, as I had heard it mentioned that those would be available, but I'm not sure if and when he might pursue that. I'm sure if there's a spike in traffic one month, plenty of people would be willing to help offset the cost, so while Age's costs will certainly go up, it wouldn't really be much more expensive than standard hosting costs, perhaps even cheaper.
Of course, if he ever has a shot at getting the hockey game back, that'll be another whole barrel of monkeys, but that bridge can be crossed when and if we get to it.
