Mavericks just finished killing off a penalty.
Still tied, about 5 minutes left in the 3rd. Mavs just missed on a point blank chance.

Just got back from the Whittemore Center...very impressed with UNH's win. The Wildcats were getting better chances, and more importantly, finishing them (though they only outshot UMass 42-39). They converted twice on an early five-minute major, and it was all downhill from there for the Minutemen. Two Wildcat hat tricks tonight; the second, by Fornataro (their captain), was sealed with a beautiful shorthanded breakaway goal. "UHN" looks poised to do some damage in the NCAA's. (Of course, they've had other years where the same could be said, and they've as yet failed to take it all.)

The announcers on the minn-minn game are huge gopher homers.

Gophers send the series to game 3. Rifle of a shot by Mike Carman. Maverick goalie was screen a bit by the D, the shot was taken from the high slot and went to the upper corner, glove side.

That would be Frank Mazzocco (Sp) and Doug Woog. Usually I have the sounded turned way down so really don't listen to them much.

They showed the replay a number of times, and I thought the shot may have deflect off the defenseman's stick. Did anyone else see it that way?

Badgers lost their series to St. Cloud State.

CBC is speculating that Badger Frosh Turris maybe available to join the Coyotes.
Title: Gerbe's penalty shot
Post by: sah67 on March 16, 2008, 01:10:53 AM
Yeah, he's a prick and perhaps the most miniscule goon in all the land, but Gerbe's spin-o-rama move on a penalty shot against Providence last night was pretty sweet:

The puck has to be moving towards the net at all times, but referees almost never call it for small backwards movements.

By the rules, the puck has to keep moving forward, but not the player.  I haven't seen the play in question here, so I won't comment on the application of the rule in this case.

Quote from: NCAA rule bookA penalty shot shall be handled as follows: As directed by the referee, the
player designated to take the penalty shot shall be announced by the public
address announcer. The referee then shall place the puck on the center
face-off spot and the player taking the shot shall, after the instruction of the
referee, play the puck from there and attempt to score on the goalkeeper.
Once the player taking the shot has touched the puck, it must be kept in
motion toward the opponent's goal line. When the puck is shot, the play
shall be considered complete. A goal cannot be scored on a rebound of any
kind, and any time the puck crosses the goal line the shot shall be considered
complete. Only a goalkeeper or alternate goalkeeper, as designated on
the official score sheet, may defend against a penalty shot.
