Title: Directions to Union
Post by: ebilmes on March 14, 2008, 11:10:35 AM
What's the fastest way to Messa from Ithaca...Mapquest says 81 to 90, but I was planning to take 88. Any opinions?

IMO 88 is faster (though I absolutely loathe that road)

79 to 206 to 88. Hands down. Especially during the day in clear weather. Say hi to coventry, triangle, and greene for me.

Last time I drove on 88, I passed 6 cops in 30 minutes.

Considering you are driving me, try not to get pulled over.

I've also seen them sit on the top of exit ramps b/c most of the exits there are an exit, a bridge, and then the entrance right back on. So they sit on the bridge and clock you and then drive down the on-ramp and catch you. Worst speed trap road ever.

The one thing that has made I-88 palatable for me was the discovery of the savory goodness of Brooks' Bar-B-Q (http://www.brooksbbq.com/).  Right off of Exit 16 on the Albany side of Oneonta.  One of the finest examples of the Cornell BBQ chicken recipe (http://elf.elynah.com/read.php?5,90750), they claim to have the largest indoor BBQ pit this side of the Mississippi.  It's sit-down, but if you're OK eating at the counter, you can bypass the line (or take out and eat outdoors in the summer).  Takes slightly longer than fast food, but it's worth it if you have the time.  Get the chicken dinner, don't bother messing with the brisket or pork.

My favorite part about Greene (at least I think it's Greene) is the intersection of Main and Main.

It's Bainbridge.  At that intersection that doesn't quite line up.

Greene is the one with the parking in the middle of the street.

The only thing I remember about Greene is a totally nondescript Chinese restaurant that either had the best fried rice I've ever eaten, or that I ate at when I was totally delirious.

As for Main and Main, the seeming convergence of parallel lines (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=w.4th+st.+%26+w.+10th+st.+ny,+ny&sll=40.73147,-73.998864&sspn=0.006732,0.014591&ie=UTF8&ll=40.735958,-73.999379&spn=0.006731,0.014591&z=16&iwloc=addr) in the West Village really screws up the uninitiated.

We stopped in Greene on our way back to Boston 3 or 4 years ago.  It was Easter Sunday, early afternoon, and Mimi's was about the only place open.  All we wanted were 2 cups of coffee to go.  They brewed us a fresh pot, gave us bigger cups than we had requested, loaded us up with cookies and pastries...and then only charged us for the small coffees we ordered.  Who knows, maybe we were the only customers they'd had all day and they were just happy to see a couple other human beings.  Still, what a nice experience.  And probably the only time I've left a tip of about 300%.
