Brawlers give the sport a bad name and most of them need skating lessons.

Anyone have any luck finding out if this was anywhere near the record for penalties and PIMs for a game?

Given how rare these sorts of brawls are at the college level, I'm having a hard time getting worked up over how bad this is for the sport.  When it's this occasional, it's actually rather amusing.  I like how the goalies just decided after a while to get in on the fun.  There must have been some shit-talking going on that I couldn't hear.

So, Canisius and RIT combined for 251 PIMs (Canisius -- 139; RIT -- 112).

The 251 combined PIMs is now third on the all-time list for combined PIMs in a single game. Maine/BU combined for 268 on 1/24/04, and Minnesota-Duluth/North Dakota combined for 257 on 10/31/98.

(And in case anyone is wondering, Cornell appears on the list at 9th place; there were 116 combined PIMs in a game against Union on 12/4/98).

The 139 PIMs for Canisius is also third on the all-time list of PIMs for one team in a game. Ohio State had 150 against Northern Michigan on 1/30/81, and Maine had 144 in the aforementioned BU game.

I saw Canisius play Army, and I'm not surprised they got involved in some goonery.

BTW, Army has a pretty darn good team.  I wouldn't be shocked to see them win the AH tournament and give some top team a scare.

So OSU, or shouldn't we call it "The OSU", had 150 and the game didn't make third at 251. That means Northern Michigan had 100 or less. Quite a difference between teams in one game.

That's about right.  I hate the common view that pro hockey is all about the fights but college doesn't really have that problem.  So the occasional brawl is an interesting diversion.  I still consider the Ian Burt/Leeor Shtrom fight one of the funnier Cornell hockey moments.

I wonder to what extent people wish college hockey had more fights, in the same way some wish we had shootouts.

Well, here's one person who would vote against fighting in college hockey.   The lack of fighting is what makes the college game exceptional.

Age, has this subject ever been polled on Elynah?   Hint Hint!!

Yana (whom I brought to the ill-fated 2004 Clarkson QF series [my apologies for that {again}]) said she was disappointed there wasn't more fighting, as it's the "most interesting part of the game."

FWIW, unlike a lot of college hockey fans I'd like to see more fighting in college.  But, it's not going to happen so it's pretty much a non-issue.

NOOOOO shootouts!

Rather not have fighting, and definitely not have shootouts.

LOL :).
I thought Menard's was a mid-west store; have they expanded to Germany ;-)? Or do you still have the annoying jingle in your head from road trips through the mid-west? ::panic::

Despite the ad jingle, is a nice store; they send you a certificate for a free gift on your birthday and an in-store rebate check.

It's from my days as a DirecTV subscriber back in the States.
Title: Re: RIT-Canisius, 8 additional suspensions

From USCHO.com

Atlantic Hockey Hands Out Discipline, Suspensions (UPDATED)
Hudson, Walton Gone For Regular Season

HAVERHILL, Mass. (Feb. 14) — Atlantic Hockey on Wednesday assessed additional penalties and suspensions to four players from each team after a brawl between Canisius and RIT on Saturday, February 9. The penalties include regular-season suspensions for RIT's Ricky Walton and Canisius' Carl Hudson.

Atlantic Hockey commissioner Bob DeGregorio and Gene Binda, supervisor of officials, have reviewed the tapes from the game, according to the league. DeGregorio assessed the additional penalties under the league's policy on Supplemental Discipline.

The two teams combined for a total of 251 minutes in penalties, which included misconduct penalties, fighting majors and disqualifications. Amateur video and photographs and an edited Canisius team video circulated widely on the internet in the aftermath of the event.

"Atlantic Hockey, the NCAA and the culture of collegiate hockey will not allow or condone fighting," said DeGregorio. "This was not representative of the student-athlete experience that Atlantic Hockey and its members are striving to achieve."

Additional games have been issued to Phil Rauch, Taylor Anderson, Jason Weeks and Hudson of Canisius and Tyler Mazzei, Louis Menard, Stephen Burns and Walton of RIT. Although the league declined to state the amount of games Hudson and Walton were suspended in its press release, USCHO learned on Thursday that Hudson and Walton will be suspended for the remainder of the regular season.

Canisius supports the decision by the league, while RIT is appealing the ruling.

The 2-1 game at Army?  I saw that game, brought my kids.  Great game, great atmosphere, but the thing I noticed versus other NCAA leagues is that the passing wasn't very sharp.  Very few high quality scoring chances despite a lot of shots.  Overall though it's the closest NCAA hockey to NYC and a nice atmosphere so well worth the trip.  Easy in and out.

Yes, that was the same game (I live about 25 minutes from West Point).  I agree the passing wasn't all that crisp, but frankly I have not been wowed by the passing I have seen in the ECAC this year either.  Over the holidays, Army apparently dominated Union in every respect except for the final score. I think Army, like most of Atlantic Hockey, has elevated to a level much closer to the ECAC and the other conferences.
