In Lynah80's defense, the first post had the wrong shots on goal. Lynah80 provided the corrected shot count. ;-)

UNH had 29 SOG in the second period.  Highest I've ever heard of.

On further review, the NHL records are:

Most Shots, Both Teams, One Game

141-New York Americans, Pittsburgh Pirates, Dec 26, 1925, NY Americans-73, Pittsburgh-68.

Most Shots, One Team, One Game

83-Boston Bruins, Mar 4, 1941

Most Shots, One Team, One Period

33-Boston Bruins, Mar 4, 1941, second period

That come's out to almost 1.5 shots per minute! That's a fantastic rate. I've seen shot totals around 20 for a period, but never as high as 29. That equates to 87 shots for a whole game. I can remember a NY Ranger game with shots in the mid-50s, but there may be higher totals that I'm not aware of. I think the NHL record for a period is in the low 20s, but I'm not sure. I've certainly never seen a college game with shot totals like this. What is almost as remarkable is that UHN only scored once in the period! One for 29 is a great performance by a goalie for a whole game, much less a period.

Are you sure they were playing in Hanover and not in Troy?

They were playing in Manchester at the Verizon.

Harvard put 32 shots on goal (27 saves, 5 goals allowed) against Cornell's John Detwiler in Harvard's 13-0 victory in February 1959.

Arthur Mintz's still useful Cornell Hockey Record Book lists the Cornell record for SOG is 80 against Colgate in January 1971 and Loyola in 1973.  (Cornell 8 -- Colgate 2, Cornell 13 -- Loyola 5). There are no period records but they surely must have exceeded 30 shots in at least one period in those games.  The Colgate game was at Starr Rink, by the way.

The Troy bit was a joke... just not a very good one.

Yes, I understood the Troy bit was a joke, and it wasn't a bad one at all.  I was correcting "Hanover."  Winning at Verizon makes it a better win for Dartmouth than winning in Hanover.

Anyone know if they keep the records from the freshman teams anywhere they they might be retrieved?  I seem to recall in the early 70s reading about a game the freshmen played against Ithaca College (at least I think it was IC - jump in here if this rings a bell and you have any further info) where the final score was something like 27-0.  The Sun reporter described it as the only half-court hockey game he'd ever witnessed.

I know it's not D1 and it wasn't the varsity team, but I can only imagine what SOG must have been if there really was such an outcome.

Of course, it's also possible it could have been those funny brownies my roommate baked...

It wasn't the brownies.  I remember that score too, although I wouldn't have been sure whether it was 27 or 29.  Most amazing thing I saw in a fresmnen game was Carlo Ugolini scoring 4 goals in 51 seconds against a Canadian Jr. B team (Dixie Beehives maybe?).  On two of the goals he took the center ice faceoff and skated through the opponents scoring unassisted.
