Scrivens pulled after the goal... Davenport in.
CU on PP now. Let's get one boys!
some wide open shots missed by cornell.. the last one the goalie was looking at his feet the pucj being 6 ft away and cornell his the goalie

Jason said Scrivens made a bad pass that gave it away to the defense in front. So the goal wasn't soft, but he caused it nonetheless.

I didn't hear the goal but it sounds like he made an extremely ill-advised pass.

Radio call made it sound like Scrivens was trying to clear the puck and sent it right to the Lowell guy who had a mostly empty net to shoot at.
Sounds like the refs want to be the stars of the game.
questionable calls give lowell 2 man power play
Do we have the pleasure of more 4 official games this weekend?
one quality save by davenport. Cornell had several chances I dont even think they hit the net from inside 10 ft..
and down goes the video..

Nah, it's the [former] New York governor's Italian cousin.
Lowell has a center named Chris Auger.
Lowell has a center named Chris Auger.
For poking holes in sieves? Muahaha. Go [greater] Beantown [area]!

Between-periods interview is with Ben Scrivens. I don't think Jason usually takes quite so much trouble to point out that the interview is taped before the game.

I don't think that's what Al was going for...
who is in the line up?

I would say the crowd size is about 3-400..

Quite a shake-up of the lines but still serious problems scoring.
give away by nash.. save by daevnport and then nive move by devlin draws a PP
LETS GO RED!!!
Kennedy! (Michael)
nice shot 1-1
great breakout leads to a nice goal... too bad it took about 5 tries to breakout..
what looks like a CU penalty, then a cornell goal, then becomes a cornell PP..
cornell is making just some awfully weak passes..
Michael Kennedy 9 of 11 on faceoffs.
YAY WE HAVE A GOAL!!! LGR

we are just so slow on D.. its the only reason lowell is doing anything
2-1!
What tune is the rink playing after Cornell scores?
Wish there were replays.
B.Nash looks a little shaky.

What player do you need to use? WMP won't open it for me.
who scored the 2nd goal?
Livestat has Scali with the goal and assists from Fontas and Davenport. . . .waiting for Jason to confirm on the radio.
who scored the 2nd goal?
Taylor Davenport
Oops. LiveStats gives it to Scali.
scali from fontas i believe.
I agree B Nash really looks to have trouble moving.. he gave away the puck a few times just on not being able to recover or move.. he looks to lack quickness and speed..
scali from fontas i believe.
LiveStats says Scali from Davenport and Fontas.
UMass: Ojay? even strength (just after end of PP)
cornell misses 2-3 good chances. then has a total breakdown turning a 2 on3 into a 2 on 1.. then after UM messes up the play the puck goes behind the net and lets the lowell player skate out in front for an empty net goal..
UMass: Ojay? even strength (just after end of PP)
[Insert Auger joke here]
Dang it!

UMass: Ojay? even strength (just after end of PP)
UML has 8 of the last 10 shots on goal. Are we pooping out?
how much time is left?
how much time is left?
10 mins even. Cornell on the kill.
PP goal Fellini
cornell pretty ragged right now.
dumb penalty..what's new?
Cornell controlled play for about 25 min. then the mistakes led to a couple goals..
This is... unimpressive.
seems like forever since we tied it up late in the game. LGR!
Cu whiffs standing in the crease with .40 to go
unimpressive is right.
A very winnable game, but we make so many simple mistakes and have no team speed at all.. Our D looked to be in Mud most of the game.. and still we controlled large parts of the game but couldnt score from inside 10 ft..
Disappointing to fade away like that in the third period. In any case, any NCAA appearance will depend on winning in Albany, so...

As I'm sure you'll agree, every game until then still matters. I take very little solace in the prospect of a great tourney redeeming a bleh season.
I had just finished typing a long post about this game when the computer in the hotel lobby crashed. Pretty much sums up the evening.
Basically, this is NOT a good team. Lots of bad hockey recently. Had a nice 100+ min scoreless strech going until we scored in the 2nd period. Can't help the goalies' confidence too much when they know Schafer will pull them if they make one mistake. Up 2-1 going into the 3rd, then let them walk all over us. I'm not looking forward to watching tomorrow's game.

Didn't say any game doesn't matter. But any success to be still gained this year requires winning in Albany. Else it's a "bleh season."
[Although I will confess to taking great solace in the 1980 team redeeming a "bleh (13-13 regular) season" with an ECAC tournament win.]
This sentence from the CU athletics page makes my brain hurt:
"Despite a second-period rally that found the Big Red take a 2-1 lead, the River Hawks of UMass-Lowell returned the favor with a pair of markers in the third period, sending the Cornell men's hockey team to a 3-2 loss in the opening game of the Florida College Classic on Friday afternoon at Germain Arena in Estero, Fla."

I confess that if it happens in 2008, so will I.

While I didn't see it, Jason made it sound like a major, boneheaded mistake. At least thats the impression I got. Those who were there, feel free to comment.
At the Winstar again, Elie? They upgrade that computer yet? ;)
Clarkson, playing with only ten forwards (apparently the result of team rules violations), lost to Maine 5-3.

Although I didn't see the game either, I don't think this is what happened here. In the pre-game interview, Coach Schafer talked about holding the players accountable for miscues, and I suspect he was sending a message by benching Scrivens: "Well, you're clearly not paying attention to what's going on -- go siddown!" I'd bet that Scrivens, having been given the opportunity to re-dedicate himself, gets the start in the consolation game, and hopefully he responds with a solid effort (rather than sulking). It wouldn't surprise me to see a few other players ride the pine tomorrow night.

Quote from Schafer per Elliot Olshansky:
"The first goal was inexcusable," Schafer said. "That's why I pulled Ben. He came out and Christmas-wrapped it right to the guy. Goals are so hard to come by, you just can't give one up."

Guh. At this point, this has to be the worst season for "EZAC" play that comes to mind. That the usual Hockey Least powers are having a pretty unimpressive year just makes this much more painful.
EZAC undercard to Hockey Least.

It was an incredibly stupid play, but I question whether it was right to pull Scrivens. He's found himself in plenty of similar situations in other games -- he falls down, or comes too far out of net -- and those easily could have led to a goal. This time the puck actually found its way into net.
Davenport was shaky towards the end of the UML game. It's not a good sign when he keeps looking behind him when he doesn't know where the puck is. (Note: This year's tournament program features four pictures of last year's games. Two of the four are of Davenport with the puck behind him in the corner of the net.)
Tonight, Scrivens played much differently than normal (for him). On one breakway, he could have intercepted the puck if he'd come out of the crease, but he seemed really reluctant to stray from between the posts. Some other times, when he might have hit the puck up ice to a forward or at least shot it out of the zone, he was content to push it aside for someone else to take. Definitely more conservative play.
Edit: And no, Fred, the Wynstar computer has not changed.

Maybe he hadn't learned the lesson because he has gotten away with it at other times. This time he got burned and gets pulled so he can think about it. Not that conservative is necessarily the right way to play but you do need to know the difference between aggressive and stupid.

You don't usually pull a goalie after a bonehead move that doesn't result in a goal, so if you're going to reinforce a lesson (one which I'm sure has been pounded into Ben in practice), this was the time to do it.
Hopefully, it sticks, and it saves a more costly mistake in a conference or post-season game.
