Title: Track at Nationals (TV)
Post by: Chris '03 on June 09, 2007, 09:59:43 AM
Two CU men made the triple jump finals. The finals air on CBS starting at 1. I don't know when the triple jump will be shown.

Morgan Uceny will also be in the 800m women's final. I believe she had the second highest time in the semifinal, so she should be a medal contender.

Yikes!  Ray Taylor won the triple jump, with Muhammad Halim seventh.

Morgan Uceny was sixth in the 800.

First Cornell national champion since 1951. Cornell also brought a (cornell)record 11 athletes to the national meet this year.

Sending this many athletes to Nationals is an impressive feat. There are no automatic qualifiers simply for winning a conference championship. Each athlete must meet difficult qualifying standards to be invited to the meet.

The women's 800 was one of the better races I've seen in quite a while. You do not often seen the top seven finishers run personal bests in the same race. The times were only slightly slower than you would expect to see in an Olympic final.

Of course, that previous champion went on to be the CEO of Cornell Athletics.

Was Muhammad Halim first team? (I assume that was what was behind the wink.) Because at the NCAA Indoor championships, Halim finished in second (http://cornellsun.com/node/22051) while Taylor finished 5th. Halim won the regional over Taylor by more than a foot, and Halim had the longest jump in the country this year (http://www.cstv.com/sports/c-track/stories/053107aas.html) prior to the NCAAs. (I haven't yet figured out if his personal best this year would have won the championship. Taylor's NCAA jump of 53' 8.5" was a new Ivy record and beat Halim's jump of 53' 7" at Outdoor Heps.)

Here are the results for Cornellians at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships:

Morgan Uceny, fourth, Women's 800m
Max King, eighth, Men's 3000 Steeplechase
Muhammed Halim, twelfth, Men's Triple Jump

An excellent showing.
