Title: Championship Counter (REVISITED)
Post by: CornellFan on April 25, 2007, 02:02:00 PM
In my original post, I neglected to include Cornell's title in sprint football.  So, by my count, Cornell has six titles in 2006-2007.  In my blog, I list the titles from the last 3 years.  I believe Cornell finished second in each year for 2003-2004, 2004-2005, and 2005-2006 in total number of Ivy titles.

2006-2007 Cornell Championships

Men's Lax Ivy Champs
Women's Volleyball-Ivy Champs
Women's Indoor Track-Ivy Heps Champs
Men's Indoor Track-IC4A Champs
Wrestling-Ivy /EIWA Champs (#7 Natl Rank USA Today, 12th NCAA Championships)
Sprint Lightweight Football-CSFL Champions

Dartmouth won the men's ice hockey title too as many of us can remember.

Thanks. I missed that one.

The point of my post was to show that Cornell has generally been in the top 2 in the championship counter for the last 4 years.

If we can sustain the strength of our lax, wrestling and hockey programs while improving in football and basketball-- we could literally dominate the conference.

Next year could be a big year for our athletics department.

Don't sell the track teams short. They can rack up four titles per year.

Speaking of which, is there a reason outdoor heps haven't been hosted in Ithaca since 1983?

While that is a very long time I suspect some of the scheduling has been due to overuse of Barton for the Indoor Heps.

QuoteIn 1953, the Heptagonal Championships would move to Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and 26 consecutive championships would take place there.

I don't know about now but I recall back in the early 90s Barton was referred to as "the only eight lane indoor track in the Ivy League" which I guess made it better suited to host the championships.
