Title: NCAA wrestling on the telly this weekend
Post by: Al DeFlorio on March 13, 2007, 09:36:31 PM
Last I checked, ESPNU and ESPN will be televising the NCAA wrestling championships Friday and Saturday.  ESPNU will have the quarters at 11am EDT on Friday and the semis at 7pm.  Consolation medal rounds will be on ESPNU Saturday at 10am and the finals are on big brother ESPN Saturday at 7:30pm.

Eight Cornellians will be wrestling and, if things go well, some would make it through to the televised rounds.

Wrestling Report NCAA rankings, with projected NCAA tournament team scores, are here: http://www.wrestlingreport.com/college/rank/ncaa_rank.htm

Tournament seedings and brackets are here: http://www.sportsline.com/images/ncaasports/brackets/d1_wre_brackets_2007.pdf

Nickerson by fall at 2:49 in first match against Smith of Liberty.

does that mean he won? Sorry, I'm not familiar with wrestling terminology

Yes, Nickerson won, but Frey, who was off to a good start with a takedown and nearfall, then was reversed and pinned by Gallick of Iowa State.  That hurts.

Leen wins his first match at 149 by 6-1.

Another big disappointment. #8 Anceravage loses to unseeded guy from Minnesota in first match, 8-4.

We're gonna need some good performances in wrestlebacks (see Manotti last year) to get a decent finish.

Looks like Hooker won, Rinaldi is winning (but the match has (1) stopped updating and (2) appears to have a scoring error).

If Rinaldi wins, his path to the championship got a little easier when #1 seed Max Askren lost in the first round.

It looks like Rinaldi, if he loses to Penn State's Davis in the quarters, will then run into Askren in his first wrestleback match.  Similar to what happened to Corey Manson in the EIWA 141lb when Harvard's #1 seed Max Meltzer lost his opening match.

I can't say I'm happy about Frey's next match either: Hofstra's Ruggirello, who gave him fist in the dual match this year. Frey won 7-5 but didn't wrestle a great match. Ruggirello is going to be looking for revenge.

On the other hand, Joey Hooker catches a break - his second round opponent beat the #3 seed in his first match. Arnone wasn't so lucky and will be facing the #3 seed.

Brilliant evaluation by me. Frey won, Hooker lost to the unseeded wrestler and Arnone upset the 3 seed.

According to [www.ithacajournal.com] Nickerson's match will be televised on TW26 in Ithaca.

Maybe yes, maybe no.  ESPNU is showing the semifinals live, but there will be two 125 pound matches going on simultaneously.  Usually they show the top-seed, in this case Sam Hazewinkel.  If the top-seed's match becomes a laugher, they'll switch to the "other" semifinal.  Not always the case--today they featured the Rinaldi-Davis quarterfinal, but the top-seed at 197 had been bounced yesterday--but more often than not.

Tomorrow morning ESPNU will show the consolation finals, and perhaps one or more of Leen, Arnone, and Rinaldi will still be alive for those.

Gave him fist? Ouch that sounds painful. Are you sure that it is legal?

....not that there is anything wrong with it.:)

2 points - and hard to recover from. I'm still impressed that Frey won that match.

In a sport that has guys in unitards grappling with each other.  And, um, "riding".
