Title: Joe in CAM

The issue (March/April) of Cornell Alumni Magazine that arrived in my mailbox yesterday has a story on Joe Nieuwendyk noting his retirement.  It's not on-line yet, but presumably will be eventually at http://cornellalumnimagazine.com/.

Title: Stephen Baby update
Post by: David Harding on March 10, 2007, 12:19:53 PM
Stephen Baby has played more games for Springfield since being traded a little over a month ago than he did in the first half of the year in Chicago (10 vs 8), but no points yet.  He also only has 8 penalty minutes compared to 21 with Chicago.

A question for the west coast/Bay area ELFers who follow the Sharks.

It seems like Douglas Murray is indeed the odd man out with the acquistion of Rivet. Are there any plans on getting Murray some playing time before the playoffs start, i.e. giving a older veteran a bit of rest against a non-playoff team, say like the Chicago Blackhawks (especially since they have a game @ ATL the next night)?

Just curious and hopeful that I can see Murray on the ice rather than trying to pick him out in his street clothes.
Thanks!

While purusing the SJ Sharks website for an update on Douglas Murray, I came across this on-line chat (http://www.sjsharks.com/fans/chat.asp?chat_topics_id=19&status=Inactive) transcript that Douglas did on 3/8/07. Seems like an ELF regular ebilmes got his question posted :).

Warning, the spelling for Baby in the transcript, will make some people on this forum cringe.

I didn't see Murray on the ice in the Colorado Avalanche game on Sunday, so I suspect that I will be scanning the press box area. Do you think he would notice me if I wore my Cornell jersey? :-P

Ha. I hadn't remembered to check back to see if they selected it. It's a good thing Douglas referred to Schafer as "the head coach." I'd hate to see how they'd spell his last name after "Absolutley" and "Bobby."

Phoenix's Hornby Suspended Two Games, Fined
 March 21, 2007

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL announced on Wednesday that it has suspended Phoenix left wing Greg Hornby for two games and fined him an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions in ECHL Game #753 against Bakersfield on Mar. 15.

Hornby is suspended and fined under Rule 29 Supplemental Discipline.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players' Association, player fines collected by the ECHL are given to the PHPA for its ECHL Player's Hardship Fund.

He will miss Phoenix's games against Fresno (Mar. 24) and at Bakersfield (Mar. 28).

When I read the question that started out complementing Murray as "an AWESOME hitter," I thought she was calling him an awesome Hitler at first.

She was! The article had a typo. Schafer had the team perform Triumph of the Will as a bonding/motivational exercise. It took weeks to deprogram Paolini.

Ah, the internet.  Looks like Hornby went hunting.  Can't actually see the hit, but you can see enough to picture it.  Hornby is coming from the blue line into the corner and hits the guy going behind the net.

ECHL News: Shane Hynes, recalled to Portland. Sounds like his rehab has gone quite well. I wish the same could be said for Sasha Pokulok.
He has been placed on the 7-day IR, after leaving a game earlier in the week with dizziness. He had been on the 3-day IR previous to that, after a big hit forced him to leave the game. Again I hope his rehab goes as well as Hynes'. But, I still feel pangs of anger with the guy for leaving the team early ( "See, I told you so Sasha! You should have stayed in Ithaca and none of this would have happened!").

I guess McKee was called up to Portland, because he is in net tonight against Manchester (Moulson's team).  Only a few minutes left in the second and Portland is leading Manchester 2-0.

Nor was he in net on Saturday against Pensacola.  Anyone want to track down whether he's actually in Portland?

Edit: I was confused.  So, he's there, definitely, and I need to stop posting on little sleep.  Go Dave!

how does he play 59:55?

if there was no empty net and no backup in for the 5 seconds, what gives?

I'm guessing he was pulled for an extra attacker during a delayed penalty.

ah that makes sense.  they wouldn't count that as empty?  it just seems like every other box score has the keeper time add up to 60 min (or whatever, including overtime), just seemed strange that this one adds up to 59:55.

Not sure if it has been posted yet but...

Cam Abbott was named the CHL Rookie of the Year.  He scored 58 points in 42 games.

Interestingly, the Mudbugs were about a .400 team before bringing together both Abbotts and Daniel Pegoraro.  Jeremy Downs is on the team, too.  From its schedule, it looks like they finished 44-20, but the website standings say 44-14.  Currently in a 10-game winning streak.

In the SJ v. Phoenix game, the Cache Casino Impact Hit of the Night goes to Douglas Murray.

After being a scratch for the last 10-12 games or so, Douglas got some ice time tonight and made sure he got on the score sheet with a second period fight with Gratton. SJ wins 4-2.

Probably he got on the ice because of this (from the NHL.com recap via AP)
"Sharks D Craig Rivet, who has six points and a plus-5 rating in 13 games since joining the club in a trade with Montreal, sat out with a minor groin injury."

DougLAS played well according to the commentators on Fox Sports/Bay Area.  He did get on the score sheet with that 5-min penalty for fighting.  Don't mess with our Doug!!

Yeah, according to the SF Chronicle, this was Doug's first game after being "scratched" for the previous 13.

I turned the game on during Doug's fight.  According to the announcers, Doug had 3 or 4 really hard hits against Phoenix (the box score credits him with only two) and Gratton wanted to address that.  Watching the replay, Gratton cross-checked Murray twice from behind to get things started (and Gratton got an extra 2 minutes).  Gratton, a forward with 1 goal, 1 assist and 173 penalty minutes, played less than four minutes.  Doug had a slight advantage in the fight with some good early blows, but it was a fairly even match.

Iggulden had a hat trick last night for the Worcester Sharks as they beat Houston 7-3.  He was named first star of the game.

Pretty impressive stats for McKee so far in this stint in the AHL.  3 starts, 3 wins, 3 goals allowed.  1.00 GAA, 0.962 SV%, 1 shut out.
