Title: Sullivan Handicaps the First Round
Post by: Beeeej on March 01, 2007, 09:35:18 PM

I noticed a quirk in the Q vs. U breakdown; Q is 2-0-0, "3-0-0 overall" against U.  I checked the schedule, and it seems Q played both U and Colgate in "non-conference" matchups early in the season.  Is it really getting that hard to schedule out-of-conference matchups with actual out-of-conference opponents that this is what ECACHL schedules are starting to look like?

The non-Ivy ECAC schools have more OOC games than any other schools and are having a hard time filling their schedules. For that reason this year something called the Governor's Cup was established and played early in the year in the Arena Formerly Known as Pepsi in Albany. This year, Colgate, RPI, Union, and Quinnipiac participated. Next year, SLU replaces QU.

I don't like it, but it's better than scheduling two more games vs. AHA schools. Also, it's probably the only way that RPI and Union ever play at TARFKAP.

Gotcha, thanks.  Oh, btw, FYP:

Which is nice, since if you are going to hold a Governor's Cup, why invite a team from out of state?

I heard an interview with SHagwell (I think) about this from ECAC Media Day (it was on the "College Hockey Talk" podcast), and I can't say I found his explanation too persuasive.  Something about exposure.

The Governor's Cup is sort of like the Beanpot, and in New York state there are only ECAC, CHA and AHA teams to choose from.

I think it'd be great to have a Governors' Cup, where all of the governors play one another.  Put Ventura and Ahnold on the blueline...
