Title: the future of DIII
Post by: Ben Rocky '04 on February 13, 2007, 03:24:56 PM
Interesting problem they seem to be facing.  Seems in some ways similar to the 1A vs IAA split, but I don't think AA schools are required to field a minimum number of varsity teams.  Actually, it seems more reminiscent of Ivy vs. say SEC.  33 vs. 17 varsity sports fielded.  Lets hope they come up with a solution (specifically one that doesn't rock our boat).

Whatever solution the NCAA proposes, root for the opposite. If ever HUAC (HUAAC? The House Un-American Activities Committee) comes back to life, the first subpoena should go to the NCAA. The green stuff floating on top of a small body of still water ... that's the NCAA.

I fear that the NCAA really wants to stick it to the upstarts among small colleges that have the temerity to go big-time in one sport, such as Clarkson in hockey or Hopkins in lacrosse. The NCAA wishes there were a way, without looking crass, to make it a requirement of DI participation exposure (so to speak) on national TV, that your cheerleaders have implants. It's probably worth an extra half-ratings-point. Muslim athletes who want to pray between periods would be forced to bow toward Indianopolis before facing Mecca. And so forth.

Even blind squirrels finds some nuts. So too does the NCAA come up with ideas that appeal to at least (or exactly) half the population.
